The Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Graft For Portacaval Interposition: An Experimental Observation, Alexander G. Yap, George Isshak, Ronald Lam, Roger F. Smith
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In an attempt to determine the efficacy of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) graft as a portacaval interposition shunt, 26 mongrel dogs were randomly selected to receive a side-to-side shunt with a 6 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm PTFE graft after portal hypertension had been created by hepatic vein ligation. The dogs were clinically observed, and if they showed signs of graft occlusion, they were reexplored surgically. The 6 mm graft had a 0% patency rate; the 8 mm graft had a 28.6% patency rate; and the 10 mm graft had an 87.5% patency rate. Histological examinations revealed adequate incorporation of …

Atlanto-axial subluxation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis presents a difficult therapeutic problem. Because of their underlying disease, these patients do not tolerate the heavy orthotic devices or prolonged periods of immobilization associated with traditional methods of surgical fusion. This paper describes a surgical technique which allows early mobilization and minimal external fixation. The results from a series of ten patients in which this technique was used are also discussed.

A Role For Dentistry In Managing The Oro-Nasopharyngeal Irradiated Cancer Patient, Michael R. Britt
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Radiation therapy for oral and nasopharyngeal carcinoma produces direct and indirect changes in the oral cavity. Before such therapy is begun, the cancer patient should be examined by a trained dental specialist so that associated problems such as oral mucositis, xerostomia, radiation dental caries, osteoradionecrosis, and ageusia can be addressed. During and after irradiation therapy as well, the dental specialist should be involved in the treatment program. In this way, it Is possible to maintain the patient's dental system through restorative measures, mandatory use of topical fluorides, dental rinses, and preventive prophylaxis.

The Role Of Industry In The Development Of Biomedical Technology, Raymond H. Kahn
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The world is undergoing a biological revolution that has made unparalleled demands on the American health care system. This demand for health care and its escalating costs provide abundant Incentives for reducing the cost through better technology. Recent developments in medical technology include the CAT scanner, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), as well as new advances in prosthetic devices. Most biomedical research and development takes place at not-for-profit institutions, such as universities, hospitals, and private foundations, much of it supported by federal funding from such sources as the National Institutes of Health. But, today, the institutions are in danger of major …

Low Pressure Membrane Separation Process To Remove Heavy Metal Complexes, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Chin-Shun Cheng
KWRRI Research Reports
The overall objective of this investigation is to establish the rejection behavior of heavy metals in the presence of complexing agents, utilizing negatively charged ultrafiltration membranes. An extensive experimental investigation is conducted with Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, and Cu1+ in the presence of cyanide, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, and oxalates, under insignificant concentration polarization condition. The rejection dependence of the heavy metals is found to be a function of feed metal concentration, metal types, complexing agent to metal feed molar ratio, pH and ionic strength. The dependence of rejection behavior of heavy metals and complexing …

Some Observations On The Development Of Use Of Computer Informational Systems In Hospital Settings And Recommendations For Proposed Implementation At St. Joseph's Hospital, Andrew Z. Richardson
Theses
An intent is stated to discuss the developmental history and social impact of computer information retrieval systems on the hospital setting with primary area of focus being the Pharmacy Department. The interrelationship among various areas in the hospital setting are considered for need and cost/benefit associated with the use of a computerized information retrieval system.
A Case Study of St. Joseph Hospital is presented in example of evaluative consideration for implementation of a computerized information retrieval system.
Different forms of the "state-of-the-art" in informational systems are considered for their effective impact on cost/ benefit ratios to patient care and hospital …
A Quality Assurance Program Applied To Hospital Pharmacy, James D. Spitler
A Quality Assurance Program Applied To Hospital Pharmacy, James D. Spitler
Theses
This paper presents an organized quality assurance (QA) program for hospital pharmacy services, with emphasis on drug distribution and intravenous (IV) admixture systems. The authors highlight the importance of structured evaluation to ensure patient safety, cost-effectiveness, and compliance with established standards of practice. The article outlines practical methods for implementing QA within unit dose distribution systems, including monitoring accuracy, timeliness, labeling, storage, and documentation. For IV admixture services, the program focuses on sterility, compatibility, proper preparation, and staff competency.
In addition, the paper addresses the role of the pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committee in establishing QA measures. Specifically, it discusses …
