Bettoli, Joseph G. Lossick, Kathryn N. Shands, Mark A. Kramer, Nancy T. Hargrett, Roger L. Anderson, Claire V. Broome

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Four studies assessed the frequency of vaginal Staphylococcus aureus colonization in healthy women and associated risk factors. An association was found between S. aureus vaginal colonization and colonization at the labia minora and the anterior nares. Significant risk factors associated with an increased risk of vaginal S. aureus in at least one study were a history of genital herpes simplex infection, insertion of tampons without an applicator, and the use of Rely (Procter & Gamble) tampons. The use of systemic antibiotics within 2 weeks of the vaginal culture decreased the risk of recovery of S. aureus. The overall frequency …

Three objectives were focused upon regarding the development of a home health agency. The first objective involved was to define what a home health agency is. Several definitions exist, however, for practical purposes, the definitions set forth in the state and federal regulations of home health agencies have been used. Many people are not aware of the fact that health care in the home is an integrated program of health and social services . Following a review of pertinent literature, these health and social services have been explained in more detail.

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause Jan 1982

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause

Theses

Should the surgeon, as "captain of the ship", be liable for the negligent acts of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist? The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is a highly skilled and educated nurse and is far more informed about anesthesia than the surgeon . The surgeons resent this needless liability , and because of this, the use of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to administer anesthetics might decrease.

To prove that the hypothesis was correct, several methods of research were done . A content analysis showed that the courts are divided on their decisions. There have been many decisions absolving the surgeon …

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew Jan 1982

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The effect of cardiac rehabilitation on blood lipids was studied in a sample of seventeen male participants of the Greenville Hospital Center cardiac rehabilitation program. These subjects all suffered myocardial infarctions, but none had surgery to by-pass the obstructed coronary circulation. Paired values were obtained for triglyceride, serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol before, and after the exercise program. The time span between the before-exercise and after-exercise values ranged from five to thirty-one weeks. The differences in the paired values were analyzed by the t-test. No significant decrease occurred in triglyceride or serum cholesterol. A significant increase occurred in HDL cholesterol.

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt Jan 1982

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reported animal rabies in Arkansas is reviewed for the years 1950-81 . Total cases ranged from 44 in 1969 to 332 in 1979, with a mean of 154. Domestic animals accounted for 72.5% of the total cases until 1961-63 and then declined to 15.8% from 1964-81. This switch from domestic to wildlife rabies corresponded to a similar trend in nationally reported rabies and was probably due to increased public awareness and the vaccination of domestic dogs and cats. Over the 31 year period a total of 18 species of mammals has been implicated in reported rabies (individual species of foxes, …

Worms In Cattle In Western Australia's South West, G C De Chaneet Jan 1982

Worms In Cattle In Western Australia's South West, G C De Chaneet

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In the early 1970s, when beef cattle numbers increased in the South West, worms came to be recognised as the cause of one of the most significant health problems affecting production. The disease ostertagiosis, caused by the brown stomach worm, Ostertagia ostertagi, started to occur regularly, but the anthelmintics available at the time were limited in their efficiency against the parasite. Because little was known of the epidemiology of ostertagiosis under local conditions, recommendations for control were based on observations made elsewhere in Australia and overseas. These were unsuited to local conditions and did not provide adequate control.

Communication Development And Its Disorders: A Psycholinguistic Perspective, Rhea Paul, Donald J. Cohen Jan 1982

Communication Development And Its Disorders: A Psycholinguistic Perspective, Rhea Paul, Donald J. Cohen

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

There is a reciprocal relationship between the study of language disorders and research in normal language development. Recent studies in normal acquisition have led to a model of language development that includes not only linguistic achievements, but the development of social and cognitive abilities that lay the basis for the transition from prelinguistic communication to the use of conventional forms. This model has been applied to the study of developmental disorders of language learning. Such a model allows the more puzzling disorders of language development, such as childhood aphasia and primary autism, to be placed in a framework that predicts …

The modified fast, which was optional, was conducted during two different time periods with a conventional low calorie diet prescribed during the four-week interval.

The diet formula consisted of a high biological value protein, dried egg white, and either glucose or corn starch as the carbohydrate source. The composition of the diets varied as follows: …

Compulsory Treatment In Psychiatry: Some Reflections On Self-Determination, Patient Competency And Professional Expertise, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1982

Compulsory Treatment In Psychiatry: Some Reflections On Self-Determination, Patient Competency And Professional Expertise, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article the author examines the rationale, in legal and policy terms, of the inextricable association traditionally formed between certification and incompetency. He argues that forming categories of people in which the law automatically dispenses with the requirement of seeking consent is fraught with conceptual inconsistencies and practical difficulties. He further argues that clinical judgments made without the consent of the patient should be made subject to an independent statutory review. Such a review procedure could also be adopted for treatments which are unusually hazardous, irreversible or not fully established even if the doctor purports to proceed with the …
