The Effects Of Overt And Covert Observation On The Clinical Behavior Emitted By Untrained Clinicians, Carol L.K. Middleton

Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the effects overt and covert observation of live clinical sessions have on the number of social/ neutral verbal behaviors emitted by untrained speech clinicians and their respective clients enrolled Summer Term, 1980, in the Articulation and Language Clinic at Portland State University, Speech and Hearing Sciences. Utilization Of The Intact Male For Red Meat Production: A Review, S. C. Seideman, H. R. Cross, R. R. Oltjen, B. D. Schanbacher

Contraception and Sterilization

Castration has long been a traditional practice in the United States. Research studies indicate that intact males grow more rapidly, utilize feed more efficiently and produce a higher-yielding carcass with less fat and more edible product. The disadvantages of the intact male include aggressive behavior (bull and boar); undesirable odors and flavors (boar and ram); lower quality grade (bull); lower meat tenderness (bull and ram) and undesirable meat color (bull and ram). Research is needed to develop antemortem and(or) postmortem handling procedures that offset the disadvantages of the intact male so that the meat and livestock industry can take advantage …

The Identification Of Ecdysterone (20-Hydroxyecdysone) In 3 Species Of Molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata), D. L. Whitehead, K. Sellheyer Oct 1982

The Identification Of Ecdysterone (20-Hydroxyecdysone) In 3 Species Of Molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata), D. L. Whitehead, K. Sellheyer

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vector Biomphalaria glabrata Say and in Helix aspersa Müller as well as in Lymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper. © 1982 Birkhäuser Verlag.

Dental Hygiene Students' Perceptions About The Behavioral Characteristics Of The Effective Clinical Teacher, Frances Gaby Carson Oct 1982

Dental Hygiene Students' Perceptions About The Behavioral Characteristics Of The Effective Clinical Teacher, Frances Gaby Carson

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

A descriptive research approach and a self-designed questionnaire were used to obtain information about the effective clinical teacher as perceived by first and second year dental hygiene students. The Effective Teaching Behaviors Questionnaire was reviewed critically by several Old Dominion University dental hygiene faculty who's comments were used for revision. Once revisions were made, a pilot study was conducted on a sample of Old Dominion University dental hygiene students to determine the reliability and validity of the instrument.

The sample consisted of the entire student population of five accredited dental hygiene programs: three baccalaureate degree university programs and two associate …

Pedodontists' Attitudes Toward Pit And Fissure Sealants As A Preventative Oral Service, Kathern Rheanice Hamlin Oct 1982

Pedodontists' Attitudes Toward Pit And Fissure Sealants As A Preventative Oral Service, Kathern Rheanice Hamlin

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this survey was to assess periodontists' attitudes toward pit and fissure sealants as an oral health service. A self-designed, 43-item questionnaire and a letter of transmittal were mailed to a random sample of periodontists belonging to the American Academy of Periodontics (N=S00). Data were obtained from 288 returned questionnaires (58 percent).

Data analysis suggested that periodontists' attitudes have changed over the past nine years in that: (1) more periodontists are assigning a high value of pit and fissure sealants in preventing dental caries, (2) more periodontists are using pit and fissure sealants to prevent dental caries, and …

Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Black-Pigmented Bacteroides Isolates From The Human Oral Cavity, Linda Jean Laatsch, Paul R. Hohenfeldt, William L. Kos Oct 1982

Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Black-Pigmented Bacteroides Isolates From The Human Oral Cavity, Linda Jean Laatsch, Paul R. Hohenfeldt, William L. Kos

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The minimal inhibitory concentrations of penicillin and six other antibiotics were determined for 66 oral black-pigmented Bacteroides isolates by using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards proposed standard agar dilution technique. These results plus iodometric determination of β-lactamase activity showed that oral isolates of black-pigmented Bacteroides are remaining relatively susceptible to commonly used antibiotics.

Assessment Of The Orifice Area Of Bioprosthetic Valves By Orifice-View Roentgenography, Paul D. Stein, James F. Brymer, Daniel T. Anbe, Hani N. Sabbah, Gordon M. Folger Jr. Sep 1982

Assessment Of The Orifice Area Of Bioprosthetic Valves By Orifice-View Roentgenography, Paul D. Stein, James F. Brymer, Daniel T. Anbe, Hani N. Sabbah, Gordon M. Folger Jr.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Orifice-view angiography permits us to visualize en face the orifice of the aortic or mitral valve. The radiopaque annulus of bioprosthetic valves assists in permitting the angiographer to position the patient exactly, so that the valve can be seen as if looking directly into the orifice. Orifice-view angiography of porcine bioprosthetic valves has been useful in assessing the size and configuration of the valve orifice. It can reveal a failure of leaflet opening that would indicate degeneration, even when hemodynamic measurements remain equivocal.
