Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson

Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

Orthodontic wire may be heat treated to relieve residual stresses resulting from the formation of bent configurations. This study utilized electronic equipment to detect and record the initial amount of activation force, and the amount of force lost due to the intrinsic properties of the wire. The information was gathered at three hour intervals over fifteen one-week periods. The data were statistically analyzed by a computer to deter mine means and standard deviations. A general linear hypothesis was utilized to test covariants and the main effects.

The Copper Status Of Vegetarian And Non-Vegetarian Men, Susan Bruce

In this study, the copper status of 18 vegetarian and 17 non-vegetarian men were compared. Copper status was assessed by determining red blood cell superoxide dismutase (RBC-SOD) activity and plasma copper. Plasma copper levels were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Plasma cholesterol, triacyclglycerols, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol VLDL cholesterol were also determined. Twenty-four hour recalls and three-day food records were obtained to determine copper, zinc, energy, protein, fat, fiber, saturated fat, oleic acid, linoleic acid and cholesterol intake. Non-vegetarians had a significantly higher plasma cholesterol and LDL cholesterol than vegetarians. They also had a significantly higher cholesterol, saturated fat, percent …

Dynamic In-Patient Therapy: A Team Approach, Le Van Cao

The paper reports on the philosophy and clinical results of an individualized but concentrated team approach to hospitalized patients undergoing a psychological crisis. The team focuses on the patient’s key vital coping technique as the source of his vulnerability and assists the patient toward constructive self-understanding. The approach favors maximum therapeutic benefit from a short hospital stay. Follow-up of the first fifteen cases managed by this method discloses a significantly low percentage of relapse and rehospitalization, and demonstrates that even such relapses can be turned to therapeutic benefit.

Mandibular Repositioning With Frankel Appliance Therapy, Clark E. Schneekluth

A sample of twelve Frankel appliance (FR-2) treated patients, in the mixed dentition stage, were selectively chosen by an orthodontist based on the Class II correction and evaluated from before treatment and end of treatment laminagraphic and lateral cephalometric radiographs. The average treatment period was 22 months (1 yr. 10 mos.). The average pre-treatment age was 9.5 years with a range from 8 to 11 years old, while the average post-treatment age was 11.3 years with a range of 10 to 13 years.

Frankel appliance therapy was the only form of mechanics used in this study.

This model describes the orthoiodohippurate (OIH) distribution and clearance in the renovascular system. The model is described by five compartments: the blood, left and right kidneys, bladder and the red blood cell compartment. Data for these compartments, except the RBC compartment, are collected with scintillation detectors monitoring OIH tagged with 1-131 as the radiopharmaceutical passes through each compartment. Time/ activity curves are plotted for the data and used as inputs to the model parameter estimation routine. A one-hour Blissymbol in-service training program was developed for presentation to staff members of a skilled nursing facility. The purpose was to determine whether the program would produce significant learning to justify its use in similar facilities to bridge the communication gap between nonspeaking/nonwriting aphasic patients who communicate with Blissymbols and their direct care personnel as well as family members and others who are significant in their lives.

Streptococcus mutans is a principal etiologic agent of dental caries and is likely one of the most ubiquitous bacterial infectious disease agents worldwide. The ability of S. mutans to colonize the oral cavity is due to sucroseindependent and sucrose-dependent adherence to the pellicle-coated tooth surface with glucan facilitated aggregation between cells to result in plaque. Cariogenicity is then caused by the ability of S. mutans in plaque to metabolize free sugars and both extra and intracellular complex carbohydrates to yield predominantly lactic acid. The S. mutans gene products that contribute to colonizing ability and thus virulence include glucosyltransferases, glucanbinding proteins, …

รายงานการรักษาโรค Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT) ที่อวัยวะ สืบพันธุ์ภายนอก และ / หรือที่อวัยวะอื่น ๆ ของร่างกายสุนัขเพศผู้ 7 ตัว เพศเมีย 3 ตัว ด้วยสารเคมี Vincristine sulfate และ Methotrexate soidum สัปดาห์ละครั้ง นาน 4-8 สัปดาห์ สุนัข 3 ตัว แสดงอาการแพ้ยาด้วยอาการเบื่ออาหาร, คลื่นไส้, อาเจียน และถ่ายอุจจาระเหลว หลังจากให้การรักษา 48 ชั่วโมง สุนัขทุกตัวหายจากโรค (100%) และ ตรวจไม่พบโรคอีกหลังจากรักษาหายแล้ว 7-14 เดือน

The skeletal muscle, capillaries, and spleen of fish with ulcerative skin lesions from a commercial fish pond in Supanburi and a natural pond in Patumtani province were examined. Various sizes and shapes of bacilli as well as fungi were found in the superficial portion of ulcers by negative staining. Virus-like particles in the necrotic, degenative muscle fibers and endothelium of the capillaries were seen by the ultrathin section. Oval, round, and kidney shaped pleomorphic forms with nucleocapsid-like structures surrounded by envelope with budding processes were observed.

ควายปลักไทยตัวหนึ่งป่วยแสดงอาการท้องเสีย ขับถ่ายเอาสิ่งผิดปกติคล้ายเนื้อเยื่อยาวประมาณ 10 เมตร ระยะการป่วยกินเวลา 2 วัน หลังจากควายป่วยขับถ่ายสิ่งผิดปกติ ดังกล่าวหมดและรักษาด้วยการฉีดออกซิเจนตร้าซัยคลิน ขนาด 30x50 มิลลิกรัม เข้ากล้ามเนื้อ 1 ครั้ง อาการป่วยก็หายเป็นปกติ จากการตรวจสิ่งผิดปกติ พบมี fibrin เป็นองค์ประกอบ หลักและแยกได้เชื้อ E. coli (ทั้ง non-hemolytic และhemolytic E. coli) ปริมาณ มากในสาย fibrin นั้น กับตรวจไม่พบร่องรอยของปรสิตใด ๆ ในอุจจาระซึ่งเก็บในช่วงหาย ป่วย สรุปได้ว่าควายป่วยด้วยอาการลําไส้อักเสบชนิด fibrinous enteritis ซึ่งอาจมี สาเหตุจาก E. coli ได้ประมวลและอภิปรายความเห็นที่อาจนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ทางคลีนิค

การสำรวจสถานภาพแร่ธาตุซีลีเนียม (Se) ของกระบือ และโคในเขตชนบทของ อำเภอบัวใหญ่ และอำเภอคง จังหวัดนครราชสีมา โดยการสุ่มตัวอย่างจากเลือดกระบือ 100 ตัว และโค 100 ตัว วัดเปอร์เซ็นต์การรับแร่ธาตุ Se ของเม็ดเลือดแดง โดยใช้สารรังสี 75Se-selenomethionine (Erythrocyte uptake Se) โดยอาศัยหลักการที่ว่า สัตว์ที่อยู่ในสภาพขาดแร่ธาตุ Se จะมีเปอร์เซนต์ของ erythrocyte uptake 75Se สูงกว่า ปกติ จากการจัดกลุ่มสัตว์ที่ทําการสำรวจพบว่า กลุ่มกระบือเพศเมีย และเพศผู้ที่ปกติมีเปอร์เซนต์ erythrocyte uptake 75se เท่ากับ 12.9 ± 3.33% และ 15.7±3.2% และ 18.1±2.9% ตามลำดับ กลุ่ม กระบือเพศเมียและเพศผู้ที่กำลังแสดงอาการและมีประวัติเกี่ยวกับอาการขาเจ็บโดยไม่ทราบสาเหตุ มีระยะไม่เกิน 3 เดือน พบเปอร์เซนต์ของ erythrocyte uptake Se 15.7±3.2% และ 18.1±2.9% ตามลำดับ ซึ่งค่าที่ได้สูงกว่ากลุ่มสัตว์ปกติอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ (P < 0.01) กลุ่มกระบือเพศเมียทั้งที่กำลังให้นมลูก และไม่ได้ให้นมลูก แต่มีอาการขาเจ็บ จะมีเปอร์เซนต์ erythrocyte uptake 75Se สูงกว่ากลุ่มสัตว์ที่ปกติอย่างมีนัยสำคัญเช่นกัน การสำรวจสถานภาพแร่ธาตุ Se ในกลุ่มกระบือที่มีอายุตั้งแต่ 1-5 ปี ซึ่งมีเปอร์เซนต์ erythrocyte uptake Se สูงกว่ามีแนวโน้มจะอยู่ในสภาพขาด Se มากกว่ากลุ่มกระบือ อายุมาก ( 6 -15 ปีขึ้นไป) การหาเปอร์เซนต์ erythrocyte uptake 75Se ในระหว่างกลุ่มโคปกติ และกลุ่มโคที่มีอาการขาเจ็บทั้งเพศผู้และเพศเมียและกลุ่มโคที่มีอายุต่างกันปรากฏว่าความแตกต่าง ไม่มีนัยสำคัญ จากการเปรียบเทียบเปอร์เซนต์ erythrocyte uptake 75se ในโคจะมีค่าสูง กว่าของกระบือ ความแตกต่างนี้คาดว่าเป็นผลจากคุณสมบัติของเม็ดเลือดแดงที่แตกต่างกันในระหว่างสัตว์ส่องพวกนี้

ไตส่วนต้นของปลาช่อนสามารถเจริญได้ดีในอาหารเลี้ยงเซลล์ Eagle ที่อุณหภูมิ 22°c เช่นเดียวกับ cell line ของ Epithelioma Papulomasum Carpio (EPC)ที่เลี้ยงจาก passage ที่ 13 ถึง passage ที่ 16 และหลังจากนำสั่งกรองปราศจากเซลล์ ของ ตับ ม้าม และไตส่วนต้นของปลาช่อนที่ป่วยใส่ลงในเซลล์ทั้งสองชนิดแล้ว พบว่าทําให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของเซลล์ดังกล่าวหรือเกิด Cytopathic effect (CPE) ในวันที่ 2 และเซลล์มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงมากในวันที่ 5 และ 7

ไก่กระทง 300 ตัวเลี้ยงที่หมวดสัตว์ปีก มหาวิทยาลัยขอนแก่น เมื่ออายุได้ 22 วัน ไก่เริ่มป่วยโดยมีอาการอุจจาระร่วง ซึม เบื่ออาหาร นอนหมอบและตาย อัตราการป่วยประมาณ 80% และอัตราการตาย 11% โดยมีช่วงการตายประมาณ 7 วัน รอยโรคที่ดูด้วยตาเปล่าที่ เด่นชัดคือ bursa of Fabricius ขยายใหญ่ ผนังด้านในมีจุดเลือดออกเล็ก ๆ กระจาย ทั่วไป หรือบางครั้งก็พบก้อนหนองสีเหลือง ในไก่บางตัวไตขยายใหญ่ และมี urate สีขาว สะสมอยู่ การตรวจทางจุลพยาธิวิทยาที่ bursa of Fabricius มี degeneration และ necrosis ของ、 follicular lymphoid cells, hyperplasia interfollicular stroma และ follicular epithelium และมี cystic cavities เกิดขึ้นใน follicles และ follicular epithelium ที่ไตมี nephorsis

การสำรวจ Trypanosoma evansi ในกระบือไม่จำกัดเพศและอายุในเขต จังหวัดนครราชสีมา (45 ตัว) จังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด (60 ตัว ) จังหวัดนครปฐม (23 ตัว) จังหวัด ฉะเชิงเทรา (11 ตัว) พบกระบือที่มี T. evansi จากจังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด 5% (3/60) และ จากจังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา 63.64% (7/11) โดยวิธีฉีดเลือดกระบือเข้าหนูขาว แล้วตรวจเลือด หนูแบบ fresh smear โดยกระบือที่มี T. evansi ดังกล่าว มีทั้งที่แสดงอาการผิดปกติและ ไม่แสดงอาการผิดปกติ

The intent of this study was to design and implement a computer-based orthodontic system providing an integrated information environment throughout the entire patient treatment process.

Total system integration was achieved by restructuring the entire information gathering process. A complete, evaluation of patient diagnosis and treatment evaluation procedures established five major information categories and a critical information list for proper patient management. Information organization was outlined to provide a logical progression in the information gathering process and patient chart forms were designed to implement this. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of therapeutic touch to anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate of 30 hospitalized women between the ages of 30 and 65 with the medical diagnosis of cancer. Subjects were matched into three intervention groups; three consecutive days subjects received a five minute intervention by therapeutic touch, casual touch, or no touch. A-trait and A-state anxiety were measured by the Self-Evaluation Questionnaires developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch, and Lushene. Common medications utilized in the treatment of psychosis include lithium carbonate and the major tranquilizers. The efficacy of lithium is well established in the treatment of manic-depressive patients exhibiting symptoms of mania. The major tranquilizers treat a broader range of psychotic disorders including schizophrenia.

In the treatment of manic-depressive illness, lithium produces normalization of affect with few side effects. However, since the interval between therapeutic and toxic dosages is narrow, lithium treatment must be closely monitored to avoid severe physical problems and even death. When a schizophrenic is incorrectly diagnosed as manic-depressive, and is treated with lithium, the patient does …

The invention relates to a novel method of administering the natural female sex hormones, 17 β-estradiol and progesterone, to achieve enhanced bioavailability thereof. The invention further relates to novel dosage forms of 17 β-estradiol and/or progesterone which are adapted for nasal administration, such as solutions, suspensions, gels and ointments. The dosage forms containing a combination of 17 β-estradiol and progesterone are particularly useful as contraceptives, while the dosage forms containing only one of the hormonal components find utility in the treatment of conditions such as menopause, menstrual disorders, etc., which are known to respond to administration of a natural or …

The Correlation Between Expressive Language Delay In Children And Their Motor Abilities, Gail G. Cunningham

The purpose of the present study was to determine the correlation between expressive language delay in children and their gross and fine motor skills. Twenty children five years through six years, eleven months with a diagnosed expressive language delay, were selected to participate in the study. Each was screened on the basis of normal hearing, receptive vocabulary skills, motor functioning, and an expressive language delay of one year or more. After screening procedures, each child was administered the Preschool Language Scale-PLS (Zimmerman, et al., 1969) and the short form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-BOMP (Bruininks, 1978). …
