Experience With Biosynthetic Human Insulin In Diabetes, Davida F. Kruger, Fred W. Whitehouse, Dorothy M. Kahkonen, Jean O. Partamian, J. David Fachnie, José Goldman, David Leach

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Thirty diabetic patients new to insulin were entered in an open label prospective study of biosynthetic human insulin (BHI). All patients experienced symptomatic control of diabetes attributable to dietary and BHI insulin therapy. Detailed six-month evaluation data were reviewed in 19 patients. A significant drop in fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin was noted at two months, and a further modest decrease occurred at six months. E. coli polypeptide antibodies were unchanged from baseline at six months, indicating that no bacterial protein contamination of BHI occurred. Percent binding of serum antibodies to human insulin measured in 19 patients at baseline …

The Artificial Pancreas Today, James F. Mcmurry Jr. Jun 1983

The Artificial Pancreas Today, James F. Mcmurry Jr.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An artificial pancreas is now available in selected centers for clinical use in blood glucose control. With information derived from 24-30 hours of "closed-loop" insulin administration by means of the artificial pancreas, subcutaneous insulin doses may be determined for insulin-dependent diabetic patients. Eleven poorly controlled diabetic patients had their insulin doses reevaluated with the artificial pancreas. Ten of 11 patients showed improved glucose control when their insulin doses were modified by this method.

Current Management Of Pregnancy In The Diabetic: A Team Approach, Seth G. Kivnick, J. David Fachnie, Chang Y. Lee Jun 1983

Current Management Of Pregnancy In The Diabetic: A Team Approach, Seth G. Kivnick, J. David Fachnie, Chang Y. Lee

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We reviewed details of 89 pregnancies in diabetic women who were delivered from 1980 through 1982. Data are presented on the obstetrical outcome and the level of diabetic control in patients with White classifications of B through R. Although the mean blood glucose levels of all groups failed to meet the criteria for ideal metabolic control (fasting less than 105 mg/dl, postprandial less than 120 mg/dl), the perinatal mortality rate of 4% compared favorably with reports from other centers. Fifty-six percent of our patients were delivered at 37 weeks gestation or later. The primary Caesarean section rate was 37%, and …

Recommendations For Care Of The Asymptomatic Patient, James D. Bridges, Thomas Killip, N. Kevin Krane, David B. Macdougall, Carlos F. Petrozzi, Michael E. Somand, Susan Steigerwalt Jun 1983

Recommendations For Care Of The Asymptomatic Patient, James D. Bridges, Thomas Killip, N. Kevin Krane, David B. Macdougall, Carlos F. Petrozzi, Michael E. Somand, Susan Steigerwalt

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We present a set of reasonable guidelines for the care of healthy, asymptomatic individuals based upon recommendations prepared by an Internal Medicine review committee of Henry Ford Hospital. There recommendations have four goals: to prevent disease, to detect disease in an asymptomatic and potentially curable state, to enhance the patient's quality of life, and to help physicians teach patients good health habits. Recommendations are made for infectious diseases, cancer, metabolic diseases, neurosensory conditions like visual and hearing loss, and general health habits. Some recommendations are at variance with those of well recognized authorities and should be viewed only as a …

This information is not available for most previous reports.

Drug-Induced Glomerulopathy: A Selective Review, Francis Dumler Jun 1983

Drug-Induced Glomerulopathy: A Selective Review, Francis Dumler

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Tbe pathogenesis of drug-induced glomerular disease is becoming better understood because of recent advances in the study of glomerular physiology and metabolism. Various classes of drugs may produce nephrotoxicity. This review is limited to types of drugs whose use may result in glomerular functional and metabolic abnormalities leading to proteinuria and/or renal insufficiency. Drugs which cause tubular necrosis are excluded. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents are examples of drugs that induce glomerular proteinuria and minimal change nephropathy. Gold, penicillamine, and captopril produce drug-induced glomerular proteinuria in association with membranous nephropathy. Finally, semustine and mitomycin are examples of drugs that induce glomerular sclerosis …

Movement Of Bacteria Through Macropores To Ground Water, M. Scott Smith, Grant W. Thomas, Robert E. White

KWRRI Research Reports

Effects of soil type, flow rate, antecedent soil moisture and other factors on transport of E. coli through soils was measured on disturbed and intact columns 20 cm in diameter by 25 to 30 cm in depth. Added E. coli were distinguished from indigenous microbes using an antibiotic resistance marker. Transport of Cl- and 3H2O was also measured. Up to 96 percent of the bacteria irrigated onto the surface of intact columns were recovered in the effluent. Soil structure appeared to be related to the extent of transport. Columns prepared from mixed, repacked soil were much …

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson Jun 1983

Age-Changes Of The Neuronal Component Of Meissner Corpuscles In The Mouse Digital Pad, Roger C. Mathewson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Silver impregnated sections of mouse digital pads were studied using light microscopy to detect age-related changes of the neuronal component of Meissner corpuscles. Direct microscopic observation, photomicrographs and camera lucida tracing were utilized. From qualitative observation, the corpuscular neurites were found to undergo morphological age-related changes of diameter, tortuosity, varicosity, branching and terminal expansion size. Quantitative examination was made of the number of corpuscles, corpuscular neurites, branching neurites, cross-innervations, terminal neurite expansions, neurite intraepidermal continuations and terminal axonal processes. The number of corpuscles and neurite intraepidermal continuations decreased with age while having significant linear correlation; whereas, branching increased with age …

Effects Of Stress Relief To Decrease Force Loss In Retraction Springs, Richard Earl Dunn Jun 1983

Effects Of Stress Relief To Decrease Force Loss In Retraction Springs, Richard Earl Dunn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Orthodontic wire may be heat treated to relieve residual stresses resulting from the formation of bent configurations. This study utilized electronic equipment to detect and record the initial amount of activation force, and the amount of force lost due to the intrinsic properties of the wire. The information was gathered at three hour intervals over fifteen one-week periods. The data were statistically analyzed by a computer to deter mine means and standard deviations. A general linear hypothesis was utilized to test covariants and the main effects.

A total of forty-eight wires were tested. Closed he lix retraction springs fabricated from …

Copper status was assessed by determining red blood cell superoxide dismutase (RBC-SOD) activity and plasma copper. Plasma copper levels were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Plasma cholesterol, triacyclglycerols, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol VLDL cholesterol were also determined. Twenty-four hour recalls and three-day food records were obtained to determine copper, zinc, energy, protein, fat, fiber, saturated fat, oleic acid, linoleic acid and cholesterol intake. Non-vegetarians had a significantly higher plasma cholesterol and LDL cholesterol than vegetarians. They also had a significantly higher cholesterol, saturated fat, percent …

Dynamic In-Patient Therapy: A Team Approach, Le Van Cao Jun 1983

Dynamic In-Patient Therapy: A Team Approach, Le Van Cao

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The paper reports on the philosophy and clinical results of an individualized but concentrated team approach to hospitalized patients undergoing a psychological crisis. The team focuses on the patient’s key vital coping technique as the source of his vulnerability and assists the patient toward constructive self-understanding. The approach favors maximum therapeutic benefit from a short hospital stay. Follow-up of the first fifteen cases managed by this method discloses a significantly low percentage of relapse and rehospitalization, and demonstrates that even such relapses can be turned to therapeutic benefit.

Frankel appliance therapy was the only form of mechanics used in this study.

The before treatment lateral …

Development Of A Mathematical Model Of Renal Function For Clinical Application, Barbara A. Holshouser Jun 1983

Development Of A Mathematical Model Of Renal Function For Clinical Application, Barbara A. Holshouser

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This model describes the orthoiodohippurate (OIH) distribution and clearance in the renovascular system. The model is described by five compartments: the blood, left and right kidneys, bladder and the red blood cell compartment. Data for these compartments, except the RBC compartment, are collected with scintillation detectors monitoring OIH tagged with 1-131 as the radiopharmaceutical passes through each compartment. Time/ activity curves are plotted for the data and used as inputs to the model parameter estimation routine. The compartments are described by a set of first order ordinary differential equations solved using the Adam's methods. For parameter estimation, an iterative predictor-corrector …

Implementing Augmentative Communication For Aphasic Patients In Convalescent Facilities, Susan H. Mcgann Jun 1983

Implementing Augmentative Communication For Aphasic Patients In Convalescent Facilities, Susan H. Mcgann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A one-hour Blissymbol in-service training program was developed for presentation to staff members of a skilled nursing facility. The purpose was to determine whether the program would produce significant learning to justify its use in similar facilities to bridge the communication gap between nonspeaking/nonwriting aphasic patients who communicate with Blissymbols and their direct care personnel as well as family members and others who are significant in their lives.

After development, the in-service program was given two "dry-runs" in skilled nursing facilities similar to the "study facility". It was then revised to improve clarity and to make it fit within time …

Escherichia Coli Strains Producing Streptococcus Mutans Proteins Responsible For Colonization And Virulence, Roy Curtiss Iii, Robert G. Holt, Raul G. Barletta, James P. Robeson, Shigeno Saito Jun 1983

Escherichia Coli Strains Producing Streptococcus Mutans Proteins Responsible For Colonization And Virulence, Roy Curtiss Iii, Robert G. Holt, Raul G. Barletta, James P. Robeson, Shigeno Saito

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Streptococcus mutans is a principal etiologic agent of dental caries and is likely one of the most ubiquitous bacterial infectious disease agents worldwide. The ability of S. mutans to colonize the oral cavity is due to sucroseindependent and sucrose-dependent adherence to the pellicle-coated tooth surface with glucan facilitated aggregation between cells to result in plaque. Cariogenicity is then caused by the ability of S. mutans in plaque to metabolize free sugars and both extra and intracellular complex carbohydrates to yield predominantly lactic acid. The S. mutans gene products that contribute to colonizing ability and thus virulence include glucosyltransferases, glucanbinding proteins, …
