The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan Jan 1984

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between social support and the blood pressure of mild and moderate hypertensives. Motivation for the study was derived from the growing realization that the social support of an individual has a far-reaching effect on illness and health and that little research has been done concerning the specific effect that social support has on blood pressure.

The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) was administered to a convenience sample of 30 subjects selected from among the hypertensive clients of the Family Practice Clinic and General Medical Clinic located in the Peninsula Health Center. The …

The Effects Of Prospective Payment Using Diagnosis Related Groups (Drg) On The Relationship Between Hospitals And Physicians, Thomas K. Vogler Jan 1984

The Effects Of Prospective Payment Using Diagnosis Related Groups (Drg) On The Relationship Between Hospitals And Physicians, Thomas K. Vogler

Theses

This study examined the attitudes of physicians and hospital administrations towards the prospective payment system based upon Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs). The study investigated changes in relationships, prior to implementation on a wide-spread basis, between the physicians and hospital administrators.

It was anticipated that the relationship between the physicians and hospital administration would change and that the physicians' attitude towards patient management would be altered. An attempt was made to determine the most appropriate area to monitor the consumption of resources during a patient stay. A survey of the physicians and hospital administration was used to determine present attitudes.

Staff Nurses' Self-Esteem As It Relates To Working In Specialty Areas, Donna Lynn Evans Jan 1984

Staff Nurses' Self-Esteem As It Relates To Working In Specialty Areas, Donna Lynn Evans

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

This study compared the levels of self-esteem of hospital staff nurses working in specialty areas versus those working in general medical-surgical areas. Fifty registered nurses employed full-time in staff positions at a large, acute-care hospital participated in the study. After indicating the area of the hospital in which they worked, the type of education they had, and the number of years of experience as a registered nurse, they then completed the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. Scores were then compared using independent t-tests applied to the area in which the subject worked, the type of education, and the years of experience. Results …

On The Memory Code In Serial Feature-Positive Discriminations, Robert S. Mccann Jan 1984

On The Memory Code In Serial Feature-Positive Discriminations, Robert S. Mccann

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The aim of the present research was to examine the nature of the memory code that contributes to performance in a serial feature-positive discrimination. In order to test the hypothesis that a reinforce expectancy based on the first-order association between feature element and reinforce defines the content of the code, different groups of rats received various forms of pretraining involving either the feature element or the common element, or both. For some groups the feature element was trained as a CS+, while for others it was trained as a CS-. In addition, some groups received training establishing the common element …

Studies Of The Depolarization-Induced Release Of Beta Adrenergic Receptor Blocking Drugs From In Vitro Neural Preparations, Patricia Sherwood Bright Jan 1984

Studies Of The Depolarization-Induced Release Of Beta Adrenergic Receptor Blocking Drugs From In Vitro Neural Preparations, Patricia Sherwood Bright

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that nerve terminals may serve as a site for storage and release of beta adrenergic receptor blocking drugs. Experiments were conducted with two different in vitro neural preparations, cultured superior cervical ganglia from adult rats and synaptosomes prepared from rat cerebral cortex. The release of propranolol by depolarizing stimuli was examined and compared with the release of the more hydrophilic, cardioselective beta receptor antagonist atenolol. In both neuronal models, norepinephrine release was monitored as an index of exocytosis. Cultured superior cervical ganglia of the rat represent an in vitro model …

Clinical And Financial Evaluation Of Patients Within A Diagnosis Related Group, Osama M. Ibrahim Jan 1984

Clinical And Financial Evaluation Of Patients Within A Diagnosis Related Group, Osama M. Ibrahim

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate financial and clinical data of patients within a selected DRG. The data obtained from such analysis will be used to design a system whereby clinical pharmacists may improve the hospital's reimbursement potential.

Based upon Upton's proposed plan, this study is designed to evaluate all DRGs in a community hospital in an attempt to focus on those DRGs which represent the greatest financial pressure to the pharmacy department and, therefore, to the institution.

Clinical and financial data of patients within the expensive DRG, will be collected from their medical and financial records for …

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki Jan 1984

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this study, lanolin alcohol as well as lanolin alcohol-povidone films (1:1 . 5) were investigated as a potential drug delivery system. The in vitro drug release from these films was studied in terms of the effect of agitation, film thickness and drug concentration. The rate of release of Cortisol from lanolin alcohol films was not affected by the intensity of agitation. Moreover, the film matrix was found to remain essentially intact throughout the release process. Further analysis of the data revealed that Higuchi's diffusion-controlled granular matrix model explained the mechanism of Cortisol release from such films. The results of …

Comparison Of Sentence Completion Procedures For The Elicitation Of Copula And Auxiliary Verb Forms From Three-Year-Old Children, Teresa Ann Muchmore

Masters Theses

Speech pathologists have several formal diagnostic methods available for the analysis of language. A diagnostician may elect to use a non-standardized procedure to supplement formal methods. A clinician-designed procedure can facilitate the transition from test result to treatment plan. Such a procedure may be constructed to account for an individual child's age, strengths, and weaknesses. Previous research has indicated that two types of sentence completion tasks, syntactic elicitation and emphatic elicitation, are effective in the elicitation of copula and auxiliary forms of TO BE from kindergarten children. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of these two …

Supplementary Materials On Drug Education, Vickie Ellen Clay

Masters Theses

Statement of Problem:

The problem of this paper was to develop supplementary drug materials to be used with the health textbook at Potomac High School. The information provided in the current health textbook is not thorough enough to provide adequate information in some areas of drug pharmacology. The supplementary materials are designed to not only provide factual information but also to encourage attitudinal changes in the students through the use of various activities.

Procedure:

Four steps have been taken in order to solve the problem of developing supplementary drug materials for the Potomac High School health education class. A review …

Pharmacognosy Of The Saururaceae : Microscopy Of Powdered Drugs, Prakash Vaman Mallya Jan 1984

Pharmacognosy Of The Saururaceae : Microscopy Of Powdered Drugs, Prakash Vaman Mallya

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Plants of the family Sauruaceae are used in folk medicine in various parts of the world. Chemistry of some plants of this family and their chemotaxonomy has been investigated in our laboratory (12).

It is very difficult to establish identity and authenticity of commercially available crude drugs and powders of the Saururaceae because a detailed, collective study of microscopic features of these plants is not available. Original papers establishing plants of this family (see later) do not include microscopic features; they describe only gross morphologic and other classical features required for systematics. They are not useful for a pharmacologist in …
