Data On The Ppvt-R For Black Kindergarteners, Christy Gail Stocks

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to obtain data from the PPVT-R scores of low and middle SES black kindergartners in the Portland area to determine if there is a difference between their scores and the scores reported in the PPVT-R. The primary question to be answered was do the scores of black kindergartners in Portland vary significantly dependent upon SES? The secondary questions this study sought to answer were: what are the means, standard deviations, and ranges of scores for black kindergartners in Portland and what are the means, standard deviations, and ranges for each two-month age group of …

Resolving Superfund Disputes Using Mediation, R. Steven Konkel May 1987

Resolving Superfund Disputes Using Mediation, R. Steven Konkel

Environmental Health Science Faculty and Staff Research

Superfund clean-up disputes are difficult to resolve because they involve multiple issues in addition to multiple parties. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and waste generator negotiators often disagree about how to interpret technical or scientific information. Examples of difficult issues include company shares of the clean-up cost, potential threat to groundwater, and what environmental standards apply to clean-up; "how clean is clean" is not at all well understood. Industry typically focuses on fairness of the allocation of cost and liability and the cost and responsibility for clean-up.

Osteoporosis And Ert--The Jury Is Still Out, Mary E. Guinan, Karen Steinberg, Lambertina Freni-Titulaer May 1987

Osteoporosis And Ert--The Jury Is Still Out, Mary E. Guinan, Karen Steinberg, Lambertina Freni-Titulaer

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Bone loss in women accelerates immediately after menopause, often leading to osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fractures. In 1985,247,000 hip fractures occurred in people over 45 years of age. Among those who live to be 90, one-third of women and one-sixth of men will experience hip fractures. Six months after fracture, 25% of victims will not be able to carry out their usual activities, and 50% will need assistance to do so. Hip fractures are not only a serious cause of morbidity but they also increase the risk of mortality in older people. Because the proportion of the …

The Effects Of Mothers' Attitudes And Willingness To Communicate Regarding Sexuality With Adolescent Daughters After Attending A 4-Hour Mother-Daughter Communication Workshop, Esther L. Dunlap May 1987

The Effects Of Mothers' Attitudes And Willingness To Communicate Regarding Sexuality With Adolescent Daughters After Attending A 4-Hour Mother-Daughter Communication Workshop, Esther L. Dunlap

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of a 4-hour mother/daughter sexuality workshop on the attitudes of mothers toward sexuality and their willingness to communicate sexuality to their adolescent daughters. The researcher sought to determine if there was a difference between mothers attending the mother/daughter workshop and mothers not attending the workshop. The hypotheses tested in this study were as follows: 1. When mothers who have participated in a 4-hour sexuality workshop are surveyed and the results are compared to a group of mothers not participating, there will be no significant difference in attitudes toward sexuality, …

Nutritional Intake And Physical Activity Of An Adult Population With Diabetes Mellitus Using The Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Pump, Teresa Jean Matheny May 1987

Nutritional Intake And Physical Activity Of An Adult Population With Diabetes Mellitus Using The Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Pump, Teresa Jean Matheny

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study described three days of dietary intake, physical activity, and glycemic control in 14 female and eight male adult diabetics using Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII). Changes in weight after initiation of CSII were also described.

Dietary intakes were analyzed using the NUTREDFO computer program then compared to established standards. Both sexes had mean intakes of zinc, folate, vitamin B6, and magnesium below the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA, 1980) for age and sex. Female consumption of iron and total calories consumed were also below recommendations. When dietary intakes were analyzed on a nutrient per 1,000 kcal basis …

Discontinuities In Normal 30 To 36 Month Old And 54 To 60 Month Old Female Children, Shelley Louise Arnold-Cockburn May 1987

Discontinuities In Normal 30 To 36 Month Old And 54 To 60 Month Old Female Children, Shelley Louise Arnold-Cockburn

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the frequency of occurrence of specific discontinuities in 30 to 36 month old normal female children to normal 54 to 60 month old female children. Specifically, the discontinuities were categorized as follows: part word repetitions, whole word repetitions, and false starts. The discontinuities were observed while the child spontaneously interacted with an investigator in a clinical room.

The following questions were addressed:

  1. Do 30 to 36 month old normal female children differ in their total frequency of specific discontinuities when compared to normal 54 to 60 month old female children?
  2. Do 30 …

Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews May 1987

Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Polyoxyinethylene (Delrin) is a polyacetyl homopolymer which has been used successfully in many orthopedic joint replacements. To determine histologic host response to Delrin as a temporomandibular joint condylar replacement condyles were removed from ten fully mature macaca fasicularis monkeys. The condyles were replaced with a total prosthetic Delrin condyle attached to a titanium mesh. Specimens obtained at one, two, and six months indicated total acceptance of the Delrin, remodeling of the glenoid fossa and formation of bone between the middle cranial fossa and the roof of the glenoid fossa. These findings would indicate Delrin is a viable option for condylar …

Affect, Cognition And Attention In The Chronic Alcohol Abuser: A Hemispheric Laterality Perspective, Edward P. Kehrwald May 1987

Affect, Cognition And Attention In The Chronic Alcohol Abuser: A Hemispheric Laterality Perspective, Edward P. Kehrwald

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the performance of chronic alcohol abusers and controls on attention, memory, cognition, and emotion from a hemispheric laterality perspective. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between these variables and their role in processing of experiences. Measures which are believed to be predominantly a function of the right hemisphere were explored in some depth.

The subjects in the experimental group were chronic alcohol abusers recently admitted to an inpatient addiction facility. The subjects in the control group were volunteers from the community who d1d not have any significant alcohol problem. Only right-handed males …

Detection Of Human Dna Polymorphisms With A Simplified Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis Technique., Walter W. Noll, Mary Collins May 1987

Detection Of Human Dna Polymorphisms With A Simplified Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis Technique., Walter W. Noll, Mary Collins

Dartmouth Scholarship

Single base pair differences between otherwise identical DNA molecules can result in altered melting behavior detectable by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. We have developed a simplified procedure for using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to detect base pair changes in genomic DNA. Genomic DNA is digested with restriction enzymes and hybridized in solution to labeled single-stranded probe DNA. The excess probe is then hybridized to complementary phage M13 template DNA, and the reaction mixture is electrophoresed on a denaturing gradient gel. Only the genomic DNA probe hybrids migrate into the gel. Differences in hybrid mobility on the gel indicate base pair …
