Distribution Of Antibodies To Bovine Leukemia In Japanese Black Cattle Raised In The Southern Region Of Japan, Takeo Sakai, Hideto Arai, Wattana Wattanavijarn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum samples were collected from 624 Japanese black cat- tle in the southern region of Japan during a period time of from 1982 to 1984, and antigen titers were determined with bovine leukemia virus (BLV) antigen by the agar-gel immunodifiusion test. An over-all average positive rate against BLV was 23.9% during this period, however, a tendency to increase year by year. Generally, older individuals showed higher positive rates than younger ones. Hearing and memory losses, cognitive decline, easily fractured bones, crankiness and depression are often considered to be inevitable accompaniments of the aging process. Yet many losses which have traditionally been thought of as age determined are, on more careful examination, turning out to be merely age-associated. Many of the declines we associate with being elderly can be explained in terms of lifestyle, habits, diet and other psychosocial factors which are not a necessary part of the aging process

Recently, the courts have recognized the right to a minimum level of mental health treatment for individuals confined in both mental and correctional institutions, utilizing a different rationale for each system. As mental health administrators in state mental hospitals accepted that they were responsible for providing an increased level of mental health services, they were disappointed that courts had subsequently ruled that individuals in state hospitals had a right to refuse treatment. A deleterious effect of spaceflight on human health is the loss of bone associated with the prolonged lack of gravitational stress on the skeleton. A potential for bone loss is indicated by the hypercalciuria and decreased heel bone density determined in Skylab astronauts. Histological studies of juvenile laboratory rats in actual spaceflight and in simulation models document a suppression of bone formation with little alteration of bone resorption. The mechanism for net bone loss needs to be defined in order to develop measures for its prevention or correction.

Enzyme II^mtl of Escherichia coli was purified from mtlA-overexpressing E. coli strain LJ1112 extraction of isolated membranes with deoxycholate, followed by hexyl agarose and ω-amino hexyl agarose chromatography in Lubrol PX. A 10-fold increase in total pure protein and 2.5-fold increase in specific activity over previously reported procedures was obtained. Tryptic fragments of Enzyme II^mtl were also purified and identified as the membrane and cytoplasmic domains by protein sequencing and SDS-PAGE. The fluorescence spectrum of Enzyme II^mtl suggested that two populations of tryptophan residues existed with emission maxima at 322 and 344 nm, corresponding to buried …

An experiment of 4 months {June to September, 1985) duration was conducted at UPLB using 13 nondescript does and one vasectomized buck to determine the effectiveness of FSH and PMSG in superovulation. With the equal dose of 2.5 mg. per doe, FSH was injected intramuscularly twice a day, morning and afternoon, starting on day 10-11 of the estrous cycle. Campylobacter Jejuni/Coli In Diarrhoeic And Healthy Animals, Suvanee Supave, Viroj Kitikoon, Thaiyooth Chintana, Indhira Kramomtong

Faecal materials from 132 diarrhoeic and 19 healthy household dogs were cultured for Campylobacter jejuni/coli and other enteric organisms. Twenty-four (18.2% C. jejuni/coli were isolated from diarrhoeic dogs and 3 15.8% from healthy dogs. Non-cholera Vibrio 14.6% and Salmonella spp. (1.5%) were also detected from diarrhoeic dogs but none from the healthy group. Shigella and V. cholerae-01 were not recovered from the two groups of animal. Three chickens and six swines with history of diarrhoea were also cultured for C. jejuni/coli but the number of the two animals studies was too small to draw any conclusion.

Serological Montitoring Of Cattle Immunised With Foot-And-Mouth Disease Virus Tppe O Vaccine, H.A. Westbury, Pornchai Chamnanpood

Thirteen groups of cattle in five provinces of Thailand were tested serologically for their response to Foot-and-mouth disease virus type ◊ vaccine. The animals were tested before and after immunisation by the ELISA procedure. The proportion of animal with significant titers of antibody before immunisation was 64 percent (range 19 - 95 percent}, while proportion with antibody after immunisation was 86 percent (range 42 - 100 percent). Prevaccination antibody had an effect on the response of the animal to immunisation, while some cattle apparently fully susceptible animals failed to respond to the vaccine. Emotional disturbance can be viewed as an inability to manage one's behavior. This inability to maintain self-control in stressful situations represents a serious problem not only for the individual but for family and school personnel. In this study, Reasoner's (1984) Building Self-Esteem program was used with seventh and eighth grade emotionally disturbed boys in a West Texas community. Their self-esteem scores did increase as measured by Coopersmith (1984) Self-Esteem Inventory. *

Adolescent Smoking Status And Socioeconomic Dependence On The Tobacco Crop In Southeastern Kentucky, Gregory Colwell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of the study was to quantify the relationship between adolescent smoking and economic dependence on the tobacco crop. A survey of 1322 students from a random sample of all secondary schools in four counties in southeastern Kentucky was performed. The survey gathered information concerning smoking behavior and social variables. Chi-square analysis was performed to assess the relationships between these variables in students from families who worked with tobacco and families who did not.
