To Shred—Or Not, Stuart L. Segelnick Dds, Ms

The New York State Dental Journal

Every dentist should know by now that any personal information that can be used to identify someone in New York State cannot just be thrown out with the trash. Unless, of course, it is destroyed properly. Although many dentists’ offices are moving toward electronic recordkeeping, some still rely on paper charts or a hybrid. For offices that use paper, there are state laws and federal HIPAA requirements that address what needs to be done during disposal.

Affordable Acoustic Solutions: Enhancing Accessibility Through Sustainable Soundproofing Materials, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Apr 2025

Affordable Acoustic Solutions: Enhancing Accessibility Through Sustainable Soundproofing Materials, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

The prohibitive cost of traditional soundproofing materials, such as Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) and acoustic mineral wool, often limits their accessibility for smaller studios, community spaces, and individual users. This review investigates the potential of sustainable, low-cost materials to offer an alternative without compromising acoustic quality. Magnetic sound dampeners, recycled wool, egg cartons, and bottle caps, for example, provide effective sound management at a fraction of the cost of commercial products. By focusing on upcycled and readily available materials, this study presents strategies to reduce the financial barriers to soundproofing. It also examines the effectiveness of these alternatives in spaces …

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher Apr 2025

Irreversible K-Threshold Number Ck(G) And Saturation Probability P[G] For Corona Product And Double Corona Product Graphs, Eric J. Moon, Soumya Bhoumik, Paul Flesher

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

We discuss the Irreversible k-conversion process for graphs, where a vertex becomes saturated and remains saturated indefinitely if at least k of its neighbors are saturated. We investigate sets S0, which when initially saturated, lead to complete graph saturation. We are interested in the minimum |S0| = Ck(G), called the k-threshold number. We consider the construction of the Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Additionally, we extend our analysis by defining and exploring Double Corona Product Graphs (of Cn and Kp). Then we incorporate …

Prevalence And Risk Factors Associated With Postpartum Hemorrhage Among Postpartum Women In Selected Health Facilities In Machakos County - A Case-Control Study, Daniel Kyalo Muthiani

MSc in Advanced Practice Midwifery

Background: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) refers to blood loss ≥500mls after vaginal birth and ≥1000mls after cesarean section. PPH is of concern in low and middle-income countries and is estimated to cause maternal mortality every 10 minutes, with a prevalence of 25% and 34% in Uganda and Kenya, respectively. Despite efforts to address this issue, the prevalence of PPH remains high and is associated with maternal and fetal risk factors that can present along the continuum of birth. Understanding the risk factors is necessary in designing appropriate interventions for their prevention.

Objective: To determine the prevalence, maternal and fetal risk factors …

Factors Contributing To Meaningful Work And Intention To Stay In Generation Z Healthcare Workers, Jennifer A. Sippel-Tompkins

PhD in Organizational Leadership

The COVID-19 pandemic intensified two growing workforce challenges: (a) the Great Resignation and (b) quiet quitting, characterized by rising turnover and disengagement. Generation Z healthcare workers, now emerging as a significant segment of the workforce, have entered this environment with distinct values, emphasizing meaningful work, flexibility, growth, and organizational integrity. The purpose of this qualitative bounded case study was to explore the factors contributing to meaningful work and intention to stay among Generation Z healthcare workers in a large healthcare system in the United States. Data were collected through focus groups, paired interviews, single interviews, and analysis of anonymous employee …

Improving The Oral Pathology Referral Process In An Academic Dental Institution, Gregory Olson Apr 2025

Improving The Oral Pathology Referral Process In An Academic Dental Institution, Gregory Olson

Translational Projects (Open Access)

Introduction: Inefficiencies in the oral cancer referral process pose serious risks, including delayed diagnoses and poor patient outcomes. This project aimed to improve the reliability and efficiency of referrals between dental students and oral pathology residents for patients with suspected oral cancer. Although early detection is widely acknowledged as critical, significant process breakdowns were identified, including the absence of a standardized workflow, inconsistent follow-up practices, and a lack of accountability and tracking mechanisms. As a result, approximately half of the patients recommended for biopsy did not undergo the procedure, leading to delayed diagnoses and potentially worse prognoses.

Methodology: …

Cuando El Cáncer Se Volvió Colectivo: Testimonios De Una Syndemia Silenciada En Arica, Chile, Isabella Gomez

Chile: Public Health, Traditional Medicine, and Community Empowerment

This independent research study examines the prolonged and multifaceted environmental contamination in Arica, Chile, and its potential impact on public health. Although Arica has historically been a key port city, its industrial role has also made it a site of significant environmental injustice. This study poses the following research question: What are the sources and perceived impacts of environmental contamination in Arica, and how have local communities responded to institutional silence and the lack of accountability? Using a descriptive and qualitative methodology, fieldwork was conducted over several weeks in the city. In-depth interviews were carried out with residents, community leaders, …

Chile: Public Health, Traditional Medicine, and Community Empowerment

Chagas disease, one of the 13 recognized Neglected Tropical Diseases, is traditionally transmitted by the Triatominae insect. However, in Chile, vector-borne transmission has been interrupted and vertical transmission (from mother to child) has emerged as the primary concern. This study explores the impacts of vertical transmission on the immigrant population in Arica, Chile, a city located at the borders of Bolivia and Perú, where approximately 10% of the population consists of immigrants. Semi-structured interviews (n = 9) were conducted with health professionals in Arica, as well as researchers based the Atacama region. Epidemiological factors, diagnosis, treatment, barriers to health, emotional …

Improving End-Of-Life Care In The Medical Intensive Care Setting Of A Midwest Hospital Through Nursing Practice Analysis And Education, Hannah Myers Apr 2025

Improving End-Of-Life Care In The Medical Intensive Care Setting Of A Midwest Hospital Through Nursing Practice Analysis And Education, Hannah Myers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The acuity of patients within the intensive care setting compounded by comorbidities and illness complications can lead to death in a large percentage of ICU admits annually. Increased mortality rates translate into end-of-life care being a prominent part of the critical care scope. Using a mixed methods approach the project looks to examine barriers, supportive measures, interdisciplinary communication, procedures, and leadership styles that determine quality end-of-life care. A comprehensive literature review revealed a number of barriers reported by nurses including a lack of interdisciplinary communication, disagreements on care plans, and a lack of communication with patients and their families about …

Editorial: Promoting Patient-Centered Care For Pediatric Rheumatology Across Africa, Wafa Hamdi, Angela Migowa

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Pediatric rheumatology remains an evolving field in Africa, where challenges such as limited specialist availability, diagnostic delays, and inadequate public awareness hinder optimal patient care (1). Similarly, research in this field remains scarce, with a significant lack of data needed to define the spectrum and clinical expression of these diseases. Capturing real-world experiences and field reports is invaluable, as it provides critical insights to identify key areas for action and develop strategies to advance research in Africa. This collection of six manuscripts offers valuable perspectives on various aspects of pediatric rheumatic diseases, including caregiver experiences, diagnostic challenges, therapeutic patient education, …

Background

Globally, complications of preterm birth are the leading cause of under-5-mortality. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common and life-threatening complication among preterm infants. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a relatively simple and effective intervention that is recommended for RDS treatment. However, appropriate infrastructure and processes are required to ensure that it is used safely, effectively and sustainably. This study describes how CPAP was used in newborn care in Kenya between 2017–2018. Our aim was to identify enablers, barriers and gaps in CPAP use.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey was carried out across all newborn baby units in Kenya …

Report: Evaluation Of Seal!Nd: School Year 2023-2024, Shawnda Schroeder, Rashid Ahmad

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications

The North Dakota school-based sealant program (SEAL!ND) prioritizes providing preventive oral health care to underserved students by targeting schools with 45% or greater of their students enrolled in the free and reduced fee school lunch program (these are considered qualifying schools). Although schools with a larger proportion of youth who are from lower-income households are prioritized by federal funding, additional schools participate and receive care from local dental providers (these are referred to as non-qualifying). This report highlights the reach of the program and the students served during the 2023-2024 school year.

Opening Up Access: Using Transformative Agreements To Diversify Health Sciences Publishing, Irma Qavolli, Mslis, Gary Kaplan, Mlis, Ahip, Beth Ten Have, Mlis

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Background

Students and early-career researchers face systemic obstacles to becoming authors in health sciences journals, such as mentorship, time, and funding.1,2 As librarians, we believe that open access publishing provides these new voices with greater visibility and accessibility to their research. However, “[early-career researchers] cited high article processing charges (APCs) and perceived lack of journal quality or prestige as barriers to OA publishing.”3 Since 2023, Thomas Jefferson University has offered multiple Transformative Agreements (TAs) to waive article processing charges (APCs) for open access publishing in high quality journals for our patrons. We wondered, can TAs bolster publishing in …

Interactions Between Explicit And Implicit Memories During Sensorimotor Adaptation And After Concussion, Devon Lantagne Apr 2025

Interactions Between Explicit And Implicit Memories During Sensorimotor Adaptation And After Concussion, Devon Lantagne

Dissertations (1934 -)

Sensorimotor adaptation is a form of motor learning whereby a motor skill is adjusted in the face of a disturbance to return performance to desired performance. This process uses memories of previous experiences to guide future movements. While the temporal characteristics of adaptation have been well studied, the extent to which these memories are explicit, implicit, or a mixture of both is unclear. In this Dissertation, I conduct three studies to investigate the relative contributions of sensorimotor memories when adapting to stochastic spring-like loads applied to the hand. By implementing computational modeling and system identification techniques, I fit memory models …

Early Motor And Language Development In Infants At Elevated Likelihood For Autism, Natalie C. Deal Apr 2025

Early Motor And Language Development In Infants At Elevated Likelihood For Autism, Natalie C. Deal

Senior Theses

During the early stages of infant development, various emerging skills set the foundation for more complex abilities. One such connection is the development of motor skills, which play a crucial role in influencing language outcomes later in the infants' first year. Although these developmental cascades are well understood in typically-developing populations, less is known about the cascade in infants at elevated likelihood for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many infants who are later diagnosed with ASD have motor delays or language delays, suggesting that the cascade from motor to language may not be typical in this population. Additionally, little is known …
