Cognitive difficulties are known to persist after remission of symptoms and to affect psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Cognitive function, measured with the Cambridge Neuro-psychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), is a reliable approach to measure cognitive function in major depression. This systematic review and meta-analysis appraise cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that used specific CANTAB tests to measure cognitive function in major depression and the effect of treatment (PROSPERO ID: CRD42022355903). 1212 studies were identified and 41 were included, 1793 patients and 1445 healthy controls. Deficits in executive functions were detected with the Stocking Of Cambridge (SOC) ‘number of problems …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains one of the most challenging subtypes of breast cancer to treat due to a lack of effective targeted therapies. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells hold promise, but their efficacy in solid tumors is often limited by on-target/off-tumor toxicities. Through comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of public RNA and proteomic data, we identified zona pellucida glycoprotein 4 (ZP4) as a novel target for TNBC. ZP4 RNA and protein were detected in a subset of TNBC patient samples and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, with expression otherwise restricted to oocytes. We generated 89 ZP4-specific novel monoclonal antibodies and used the …

The burden of pathogenic enteric protozoa and soil-transmitted helminths among impoverished populations living on the Texas-Mexico border is unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study on an ongoing longitudinal cohort of 616 adults residing in Starr County, Texas. A total of 359 adults were screened for four protozoa and five soil-transmitted helminths by using real-time polymerase chain reaction. This analysis identified 48 (13.4%) participants who tested positive for Blastocystis sp., three (0.8%) who tested positive for Giardia intestinalis, and one (0.3%) who tested positive for Strongyloides stercoralis and was also coinfected with Blastocystis sp. Infection was significantly associated with age, a …

Bone metastases can disseminate to secondary sites and promote breast cancer progression creating additional clinical challenges. The mechanisms contributing to secondary metastasis are barely understood. Here, we evaluate the prediction power of Her2-expressing (Her2E) circulating tumor cells (CTCs) after analyzing over 13,000 CTCs from a cohort of 137 metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients with initial HR+/Her2− status and employ preclinical models of bone metastasis (BM) to validate the role of Her2E CTCs in multi-organ metastases. While Her2 expression was higher in patients with bone metastasis, experimental analyses revealed that Her2E CTCs derived from bone lesions were more dependent on Her2 …

Natural killer T cells (NKTs) are a promising platform for cancer immunotherapy, but few genes involved in the regulation of NKT therapeutic activity have been identified. To find regulators of NKT functional fitness, we developed a CRISPR/Cas9-based mutagenesis screen that uses a guide RNA (gRNA) library targeting 1,118 immune-related genes. Unmodified NKTs and NKTs expressing a GD2-specific chimeric antigen receptor (GD2.CAR) were transduced with the gRNA library and exposed to CD1d+ leukemia or CD1d-GD2+ neuroblastoma cells, respectively, over six challenge cycles in vitro. Quantification of gRNA abundance revealed enrichment of PRDM1-specific gRNAs in both NKTs and GD2.CAR NKTs, a result …

GWAS of Alzheimer's disease have been predominantly based on European ancestry cohorts with clinically diagnosed patients. Increasing the ancestral diversity of GWAS and focusing on imaging brain biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease may lead to the identification of new genetic loci. Here, we perform a GWAS on cerebral β-amyloid deposition measured by PET imaging in 3,885 East Asians and a cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analysis with data from 11,816 European participants. Our GWAS analysis replicates known loci (APOE4, CR1, and FERMT2) and identifies a novel locus near SORL1 that is significantly associated with β-amyloid deposition. Single-nucleus expression analysis shows that SORL1 is differentially …

Using A Cadaveric Model Of Lumbar Scoliosis To Determine Optimal Patient Positioning For Reliable Bone Mineral Density Measures Using A Hologic Dexa Scanner, Caleb B. Schuring, Alexander H.K. Montoye
The Journal of Integrative Physiology
Introduction: Osteoporosis and osteopenia affect roughly 10 million and 43 million older adults, respectively, in the United States. The primary way to detect osteoporosis and osteopenia is through a bone mineral density (BMD) scan, as is often done using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). However, previous research shows DEXA to be unreliable when assessing BMD in individuals with lumbar scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of spine orientation on the DEXA scanning bed on lumbar BMD measures, using a cadaver spine as a model. Methods: One female cadaver was dissected to the skeletal …

College Healthcare Providers: Are They Prepared To Treat Students Following A Disclosure Of Sexual Assault?, Torrie Piasecki, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
Sexual assault is happening on university and college campuses. This study aims to explore the gap in care relative to how on-campus healthcare providers respond to college students following a disclosure of sexual assault and the access to resources provided to them. A sample of seven providers from two major college campuses in Stockton, CA responded to a questionnaire about formal disclosures of sexual assault. Each participant self-reported their knowledge of trauma-informed care (TIC) and what they understand about their campus resources for survivors of sexual assault. Results from participants who completed the survey indicated that although most knew where …

Use Of An Evidence-Based Practice Model When Implementing An Evidence-Based Practice Change, Gretchen M. Roberts Msn, Rn, Ne-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Implementing evidenced-based practice (EBP) changes at large healthcare organizations is often a lengthy and difficult process, and sustainability is even harder. Many organizations continue to implement changes in EBP without using a standard approach or an evidenced-base practice model. One large healthcare organization in the Midwest is implementing a Professional Development and Advancement Program (also known as clinical ladder) for the direct care nurses across the health system. This is a proposed project and the program will be implemented using the Iowa Model for evidence-based practice change as a framework for guiding the implementation. The implementation team will use the …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Master of Science with Project Option
This study evaluated Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 as a surrogate for Salmonella inactivation in black peppercorns treated with hydrogen peroxide (HP) vapor via fluidization. The selected parameter for dwell temperature was 60ºC for 60 minutes. The reduction of both Salmonella and E. faecium, along with changes in water activity, color, and residual hydrogen peroxide, were measured before, immediately after treatment and at 24 and 48 hours post-treatment. Results showed that E. faecium exhibited a significantly greater reduction (4.63 ± 0.55 log CFU/g) compared to Salmonella (2.94 ± 0.16 log CFU/g) (p < 0.05), making E. faecium unsuitable as …

NURS 464: Evidence-Based Nursing Capstone
Science is no stranger to skeptics, and vaccine technology has proven no exception to being immune from detractors since the inception of inoculation (Lanzarotta, 2024). At first, people questioned vaccine safety and efficacy, fearing contraction of disease. Public trust in vaccination gained traction with such successes as the polio vaccine, but the Wakefield article published in 1998 falsely linked the MMR vaccine to autism, arguably launching modern vaccine skepticism (Motta & Stecula, 2021). It was retracted twelve years after publication following refutation by evidence-based research, but not before increasing internet speeds allowed for the dissemination and proliferation of vaccine misinformation. …

A Semi-Mechanistic Model Of Immune Tolerance Induction To Support Preclinical Development Of A Human Monoclonal Antibody, Paridhi Gupta
Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)
Administration of human monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in preclinical species often triggers an immunogenic response, leading to the formation of anti-drug antibodies (ADA). ADA can bind to the mAb and reduce their systemic exposure by enhancing immune-complex mediated clearance. Thus, ADA complicates the accurate assessment of preclinical pharmacokinetics and toxicology studies. To mitigate this effect, we explored short-term immunosuppressive therapy (methotrexate or combination of tacrolimus and sirolimus) to induce prolonged immune tolerance towards a human mAb, erenumab, in rats. The results demonstrated that tacrolimus/sirolimus but not the methotrexate regimens prevented ADA formation in all treated animals relative to the non-immunocompromised control …

College of Nursing Reviews and Protocols
In the United States, a major contributing factor to health outcome disparities in minoritized populations is a lack of diversity in the healthcare setting. Nursing has intentionally sought to recruit individuals from minority backgrounds into the workforce to negate these disparities and have greater community representation. The purpose of this scoping review was to systematically explore literature on the influences of Hispanic individuals when pursuing nursing education prior to nursing school admission.
A scoping review methodology was utilized following the nine-step process described by the Joanna Briggs Institute and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis guideline utilizing …

Patients with a mixed dentition can present for dental treatment with a nonvital primary tooth. The treatment of choice is often extraction, with the subsequent space presenting a cosmetic issue or requiring a space maintainer to preserve arch integrity for the erupting permanent teeth. Presented is a nonsurgical alternative treatment that saves the tooth, is less invasive, and may be preferred by some patients and their families. It is a procedure that may often be overlooked but can be included in the armamentarium of general dentists, pediatric dentists and endodontists.

Treatment Options For Pre-Eruptive Intracoronal Resorption Of Permanent Teeth: A Report Of Two Cases, Dhaval Shah Dds, Bret Lesavoy Dmd, Richard Yoon D.D.S.
The New York State Dental Journal
Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) is a condition found in 2% to 8% of cases, initially seen as a radiolucent area beneath the dentino-enamel junction in unerupted teeth. This case series highlights pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) diagnosis and diverse management approaches for two presentations: one with symptomatic maxillary second molar PEIR and another with incidentally discovered mandibular second molar PEIR. Often confused with traditional dental caries due to its radiolucent appearance, it was previously termed “pre-eruptive” caries. Differentiating between “progressive” and "nonprogressive” forms is crucial. Treatment options depend on radiographic extent, lesion progression and clinical symptoms.

Research Projects
A balance of commensal and pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity is essential for optimal oral and systemic health. Our previous studies demonstrate that E- liquid aerosol ± flavors (particularly cinnamon) are detrimental to several strains of oral commensal streptococcal bacteria. However, very little information is available concerning the effects of E-liquid aerosols on oral pathogens. For this reason, Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogenic anaerobe and critical contributor to periodontal disease, was chosen for this study. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of E-liquid aerosol ± flavors on the planktonic growth of P. gingivalis. Methods: P. gingivalis, initially grown …

Framework:
The guiding framework for this study was Mentoring Up (Hale & Phillips, 2019), a grounded theory of nurse-to-nurse mentoring. The Mentoring Up Theory identifies five phases of mentoring: seeding, opening, laddering, equalizing, and reframing.
