For young children with autism spectrum disorder, one important determinant of later social and emotional functioning is the development of a secure attachment. While there is extensive literature outlining the benefits of attachment security, there is a limited number of studies specifically examining programs intended to increase attachment security in this population. This project aims to create a four-session workshop designed to provide caregivers of children in this population with information about attachment theory and parental sensitivity in order to increase the amount of positive and emotionally validating experiences in child-caregiver interactions while reducing parental stress. Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically susceptible individuals, leading to villous atrophy, nutrient malabsorption, and a range of systemic complications. Although adherence to a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) remains the only effective treatment, growing evidence suggests that the GFD alone may be insufficient in meeting the long-term nutritional and psychosocial needs of adults with CD. Myopia is the most common eye disease and a leading cause of blindness. A contemporary, large, and ethnically and geographically diverse study of ocular biometry and refractive error in children in the United States is needed to help better describe differences between myopic and nonmyopic eyes.

This is an initial cross-sectional report from the Refractive Error and Axial Length Growth Curve Study that includes ocular component data as a function of age, gender, and geographic location. Acute chest syndrome is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with sickle cell disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recommends that patients with sickle cell disease perform ten breaths of incentive spirometry (IS) every two hours while awake to prevent development of acute chest syndrome. Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate and assess the oral surgery needs in a pediatric hospital dental clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Methods: Following IRB approval, appointments over a 6-month time-period were reviewed and recorded when a referral was placed to an oral surgeon. The reason for referral, patient age and medical history were recorded and analyzed. Results: Half of the patients needing oral and maxillofacial procedures were between the ages of 8-10 years old. Despite clinical guidelines recommending postpartum care for all women, especially those with chronic conditions, less than 50% receive a visit within 12 months of childbirth. Recent policy changes extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months. Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is a severe corneal infection caused by the free-living amoeba, Acanthamoeba. Both stages of its life cycle (trophozoite and cyst) cause infection, primarily in contact lens wearers. It is often misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and poor clinical outcomes. Current treatment options for AK rely on anti-amoebic agents that are toxic to corneal epithelial cells. Further, no single drug can eliminate both forms of the amoeba. Approximately 30% of all AK infections require a corneal transplant.

The interindividual RNFLT peak location variability contribution to this wide normative range has not been directly evaluated. This study explores the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in reducing suicidal ideation and improving mental health outcomes among college-attending young adults (ages 18–24) with a history of trauma. EMDR is a body-based psychotherapy designed to alleviate distressing thoughts and trauma. Background: Digital-based mobile interventions hold significant promise in preventing suicide. Although mixed, some evidence suggests these interventions are effective and capable of overcoming barriers such as cost and stigma. Aim(s): This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of digital interventions designed to address suicidal ideation and behaviors and the impacts of age, gender, and control group type on these outcomes.

Methods: Databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on digital suicide interventions (apps/online programs) published before January 1, 2022. Data were analyzed using a random-effects model in Stata 17.

Objective: We adapted the empirically supported Family Teamwork intervention protocol to support collaborative parent involvement in type 1 diabetes (T1D) management among African American and Latino parents of children with T1D. Hypothesis: Integrating key maternal and postnatal infant variables in the first 2 weeks of age into machine learning (ML) algorithms will reliably predict survival and specific morbidities in VLBW preterm infants.

Anteroposterior elongation of the vertebrate body plan is driven by convergence and extension (C&E) gastrulation movements in both the mesoderm and neuroectoderm, but how or whether molecular regulation of C&E differs between tissues remains an open question. Using a zebrafish explant model of anteroposterior axis extension, we show that C&E of the neuroectoderm and mesoderm can be uncoupled ex vivo, and that morphogenesis of individual tissues results from distinct morphogen signaling dynamics. Using precise temporal manipulation of BMP and Nodal signaling, we identify a critical developmental window during which high or low BMP/Nodal ratios induce neuroectoderm- or mesoderm-driven C&E, respectively. …

Background: Natural killer (NK) cell deficiency (NKD) is an immunodeficiency phenotype in which abnormality of NK cells is the major clinically relevant immune defect.

Objective: We sought to define the clinical, immunologic, and genetic characteristics of patients with NKD to aid in the understanding of these individuals and this cell type and guide future research and clinical practice.

Methods: During 2006-2022, 168 individuals with a suspected diagnosis of NKD were enrolled, with comprehensive clinical, immunologic, and genetic data collected and analyzed. Research exome sequencing was performed to identify both known and novel genetic associations.

Patient-centered outcomes, including patient-reported outcomes (PROs), are increasingly important in healthcare and research, though their use in rare diseases remains limited. In disorders with significant phenotypic variation, selecting appropriate outcome measures is crucial to ensuring the relevance of clinical trials for the patient population. Phosphomannomutase 2-CDG (PMM2-CDG) involves a complex genotype-phenotype relationship, making it challenging to predict clinical outcomes and select reliable measures for clinical trials. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of the Veterans Affairs Low Vision Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VALVVFQ-48) functional vision scores (FVS) in patients with USH2A-associated retinal degeneration. In addition, to correlate the change in the VALVVFQ-48 FVS with the change in visual function (VF) measurements.

Background: The pivotal phase 3 EPITOPE trial, a 12-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of epicutaneous immunotherapy with the VIASKIN patch containing 250 μg of peanut protein (VP250), previously reported significant treatment response versus placebo in peanut-allergic toddlers aged 1 through 3 years.

Objective: To assess the interim efficacy and safety of VP250 from the first year of the EPITOPE open-label extension (OLE) study.

Methods: Eligible participants enrolled in the OLE study for up to 3 years of total treatment with annual double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFCs) and safety assessments; here we report the first-year OLE (year 2) results.
