Expanding Inducible Epithelial Resistance Against Pneumonia: Novel Virus, Novel Receptor, Michael Longmire

Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death worldwide and presents a continuing risk among immunocompromised patients. Our work has been focused for many years on the phenomenon of inducible epithelial resistance, where activation of the innate immune response in the airway epithelium is necessary and sufficient to produce a pathogen-killing but self-protective environment to prevent severe disease. Inducible resistance is pathogen-agnostic and has been demonstrated against an array of respiratory infections. Parents who enter the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) undergo numerous stressors on their psychological wellbeing that can leave them with impacts long after discharge. This review was conducted to analyze the severity of long-term mental health deficits in parents and compare various nursing interventions that could decrease the incidence of these deficits. Seven databases were searched within the past seven years and documented in the PRISMA flow chart with twelve articles being identified as meeting the inclusion requirements. Objectives: Trauma exposures and high rates of burnout are widespread among emergency department (ED) clinicians and patients. Trauma-informed care (TIC) education promotes resilience for patients and clinicians. However, there remains a scarcity of data on the impact of TIC on ED clinician outcomes. The objectives of this study were to evaluate post-COVID-19 pandemic professional quality of life among ED clinicians and to test if participation in a TIC education initiative among ED clinicians (1) improves professional quality of life and (2) decreases bias toward patients who misuse opioids.

Progressive declines in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) often precede acute kidney injury (AKI), yet the relationship between eGFR trends and AKI risk remains unclear. This study investigates longitudinal eGFR changes and their association with AKI in 459 lung transplant patients followed for up to 7 years (n = 6419). We applied a piecewise linear mixed-effects model to evaluate eGFR trajectories and a Cox proportional hazards model to assess time to AKI. A joint model was used to explore the interplay between longitudinal and survival processes. The FiberTape (FT) System (Arthrex, Naples, FL, USA), initially developed for orthopedic surgery, is a new, nonmetallic, suture-based alternative to standard stainless-steel wires for sternal reapproximation. Publications on FT use after cardiothoracic surgery are limited. The FT System has not been used in upper hemisternotomy (UHS) closure. Consequently, we report the use of the FT System for sternal closure in a 70-year-old man after UHS aortic valve replacement and discuss several advantages of its application.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains one of the deadliest cancers demanding better and more effective therapies. BARD1 or BRCA1-Associated -Ring Domain-1 plays a pivotal role in homologous recombination repair (HRR). However, its function and the underlying molecular mechanisms in PDAC are still not fully elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that BARD1 is overexpressed in PDAC and its genetic inhibition suppresses c-Myc and disrupts c-Myc dependent transcriptional program. Mechanistically, BARD1 stabilizes c-Myc through ubiquitin-proteasome system by regulating FBXW7. Importantly, targeting BARD1 using either siRNAs or CRISPR/Cas9 deletion blocks PDAC growth in vitro and in vivo, without any signs of toxicity to mice. …

Introduction: Evidence suggests that women value and benefit from having a labour companion during childbirth. However, the applicability of the evidence to low-income and lower-middle-income countries is limited and varies. Thus, we assessed the association between the presence of labour companions and mistreatment in 16 hospitals of Benin, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate if differences exist in neuromuscular qualities between different leagues in English male soccer. Twenty soccer players (age: 23.3±5.2 years, stature: 180.3±7.0cm, mass: 82.5±7.7kg) from English football league two (EFL2). 34 soccer players (age: 25.8±4.3 years, stature: 180.9±5.6cm, mass: 81.4±8.6kg) from National league (NL) and 23 soccer players (age: 27.5±4.3 years, stature: 182.1±5.5cm, mass: 84.1±8.0kg) from National league North (NLN). In order to gauge preparedness for an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in the United States, a scoping review of the current literature was conducted. This process involved (1) identifying the research question, (2) identifying studies relevant to the topic, (3) selecting studies for inclusion (4) charting the data, and (5) analyzing and reporting the final data. Ultimately, seventeen studies were deemed appropriate for examination within this scoping review and several key themes were identified. Neonatal calf health is an important factor in the productivity and profitability in the beef cattle industry, influencing preweaning survival, growth, and long-term performance. The overall objective of this thesis is to characterize risk factors that contribute to health issues in young beef calves. This thesis explores the contested nature of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), focusing on its cultural and historical constructions. While ADHD has been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 1980, its legitimacy remains a subject of debate across medical, disability studies, and historical scholarship. Using Eli Clare’s critique of diagnosis as a tool rather than a fact, this project examines how ADHD is both pathologized and re-storied within societal and medical discourses. It highlights the tension between medical classifications and lived experiences of those diagnosed with ADHD, particularly in the context of girlhood.

INTRODUCTION

Inflammasome activation is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We previously demonstrated that nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), drugs approved to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B, also inhibit inflammasome activation.

METHODS

We evaluated the association between NRTI exposure and subsequent development of AD in the United States Veterans Health Administration over a 24-year period and in the MarketScan database over a 14-year period using propensity score-matched multivariate Cox hazards regression and Kaplan–Meier analyses.

BACKGROUND: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) introduced an approach for malnutrition diagnosis in 2019 that comprised screening followed by assessment of three phenotypic criteria (weight loss, low body mass index [BMI], and low muscle mass) and two etiologic criteria (reduced food intake/assimilation and inflammation/disease burden). This planned update reconsiders the GLIM framework based on published knowledge and experience over the past 5 years.

Zoos functions as a site where human-animal relationships are structured through built environments that mediate control and representation. This study examines zoos as heterotopias—spaces where power and surveillance are negotiated between human observers and captive nonhuman animals. While zoos are often framed as spaces of conservation and education, their architectural design reinforces hierarchies of observation and confinement, shaping both human perceptions of nature and the lived experiences of nonhuman animals. This research focuses on Asian elephants as a critical species within this framework, exploring how their captivity illuminates tensions between human-imposed structures and nonhuman autonomy. Kinase fusion genes were the most targeted fusion gene group among multiple major cellular gene groups. Kinase inhibitors disrupt aberrant signaling cascades and inhibit tumor progression, yet the specific mechanisms of action of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved inhibitors in the context of kinase fusion oncoproteins remain largely unknown. This gap limits our ability to develop personalized therapies and next-generation kinase inhibitors. To address this, we developed a novel in silico pipeline for predicting 3D structures of kinase fusion proteins and performing structure-based virtual screening. Despite FL's popularity, how to deal with missing values in a federated manner is not well understood. In this work, we initiate a study of federated imputation of missing values, particularly in complex scenarios, where missing data heterogeneity exists and the state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches for federated imputation suffer from significant loss in imputation quality. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) via natural competence allows bacteria to incorporate extracellular DNA (eDNA) into their genomes, facilitating genetic diversity and adaptation. In Acinetobacter species, natural competence depends on DNA binding and uptake mediated by type IV pili (T4P). T4P are dynamic extracellular filaments composed primarily of the major pilin subunit PilA, along with a few minor subunits. T4P drive a range of cellular functions including twitching motility, biofilm formation, and DNA uptake, with some functions dependent on pilus retraction and others not.
