On Death And Disease: How Physicians’ Perspectives Compare Across Specialties Through Written Work, Stephanie Anne C. Alkonga

Narrative medicine is a tool that the medical field is increasingly utilizing to cultivate patient-centered and culturally competent doctors and to reflect on lived experiences through texts that focus on psychosocial best practices. This study aims to examine the language used in physician-written works that address how physicians in different medical specialties treat the aging and the terminally ill, and how they view the deceased. Qualitative data guided by thematic questions will primarily be used in the analysis and comparison of these texts’ tone, rhetoric, diction, and similar literary devices to uncover if certain patterns arise across such specialties. Significance of Reported Allergies: Many reported drug allergies are mislabeled side effects or misinterpretations, leading to suboptimal treatment, antibiotic resistance, and worse patient outcomes.¹

Central Sensitization Syndromes (CSS): CSSs are chronic pain conditions linked to altered sensory perception, including pain, fatigue, and neurologic dysfunction.² These patients may be more likely to misattribute medication side effects as allergies.

Previous Findings & Hypothesis: Prior research found high allergy reporting in interstitial cystitis and fibromyalgia—both CSS conditions.⁴ We hypothesized that other CSS diagnoses also correlate with increased allergy reporting, emphasizing the need for better allergy evaluation.

Objective: To describe the presentation, management, and outcomes of severe hypercalcemia in two adolescent females secondary to ovarian malignancy. Methods: The case series includes two adolescent female patients, aged 11 and 16, diagnosed with rare ovarian malignancies and associated hypercalcemia. The 11-year-old female was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of ovary while the 16-year-old was diagnosed with dysgerminoma. Both patients presented with abdominal pain, nausea and constipation. The 11-year-old received zoledronic acid while the 16-year-old received pamidronate. Serum calcium level, symptoms and adverse effects were monitored before and after both medications. Specifically, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) exceed all other NCDs in annual deaths and especially affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is the most common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia in intensive care unit patients. P. aeruginosa utilizes a type III secretion system that injects exoenzymes U, S, T, and/or Y into the host cell cytosol. A majority of clinically isolated P. aeruginosa strains express ExoY often in combination with ExoU and ExoT, or ExoS and ExoT. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are highly effective as disinfectants, herbicides, and pesticides; thus, overuse causes elevated levels of residual toxicity in domestic and industrial wastewater. QACs can be toxic to essential bacteria breaking down pollutants in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and can remain untreated in effluent, harming the environment, and contributing to antibiotic resistance, posing risks to human health. Novel boronium-based antimicrobial compounds have demonstrated efficacy in eliminating bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Between 2012 and 2018, the annual 14% increase in insulin prices made Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) the most expensive chronic health condition, significantly raising out-of-pocket costs for uninsured or underinsured individuals in the United States (Hayes & Farmer, 2020; Willner et al., 2020). This study utilized a qualitative content analysis methodology to explore the challenges and experiences of parents with children diagnosed with T1D with accessing insulin for their child. Five participants from various areas of the United States responded to open-ended questions both in person and via Zoom.
