Background

Bangladesh faces one of the highest global burdens of maternal and newborn deaths, primarily caused by hemorrhage and eclampsia/preeclampsia. Despite reducing maternal mortality by 40%, comprehensive medical interventions remain insufficient in health facilities.

Objectives

This study assessed the readiness of sub-district hospitals in Bangladesh to provide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) and analyzed the association between facility readiness and delivery rates.

Methods

Using Health Facility Assessment Survey data from 140 hospitals in 2014 and 141 in 2017, facility readiness was measured based on nine signal functions: administering antibiotics, oxytocin, and anticonvulsants; providing blood transfusions; performing cesarean and assisted …

OBJECTIVES: Psoriasis (PsO) is a systemic autoimmune disease primarily characterized by erythematous plaques on the skin. While extra-dermal manifestations like psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are well recognized, data linking PsO to interstitial lung disease (ILD) remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether patients with PsA have a higher risk of developing ILD compared with patients with PsO.

Anti-3rd-party central memory veto CD8 T (veto Tcm) cells can overcome T cell-mediated graft rejection under mild conditioning without causing significant graft versus host disease (GVHD). We previously demonstrated that these veto Tcm cells can effectively delete anti-donor T cell clones through a Fas-FasL mechanism, whereas their ability to neutralize alloreactive natural killer (NK) cells and the mechanism of such potential activity remained unknown. Using “nude” mice as recipients of allogeneic T cell-depleted hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), we demonstrate effective inhibition of NK-mediated rejection by Tcm cells. Radiotherapy is a pillar of breast cancer treatment; however, it remains unclear how radiotherapy modulates the tumor microenvironment. We investigated this question in a cohort of 20 patients with estrogen-receptor positive (ER+) breast tumors who received neoadjuvant radiotherapy. Tumor biopsies were collected before and 7 days postradiation. Single-cell DNA sequencing (scDNA-seq) and scRNA-seq were conducted on 8 and 11 patients, respectively, at these two time points. The scRNA data showed increased infiltration of naive-like CD4 T cells and an early, activated CD8 T cell population following radiotherapy. Radiotherapy also eliminated existing cytotoxic T cells and resulted in myeloid cell increases. …

The histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methyltransferase KMT2D (also called MLL4) is one of the most frequently mutated epigenetic modifiers in many cancers, including medulloblastoma (MB). Notably, heterozygous KMT2D loss frequently occurs in MB and other cancers. However, its oncogenic role remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we show that heterozygous Kmt2d loss in murine cerebellar regions promotes MB genesis driven by heterozygous loss of the MB-suppressor gene Ptch via the upregulation of tumor-promoting programs (e.g., oxidative phosphorylation [OXPHOS]). Studying the relationships between longitudinal changes in omics variables and event risks requires specific methodologies for joint analyses of longitudinal and time-to-event outcomes. We applied two such approaches (joint models [JM], stochastic process models [SPM]) to longitudinal metabolomics data from the Long Life Family Study, focusing on the understudied associations of longitudinal changes in lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) with mortality and aging-related outcomes. We analyzed 23 LPC species, with 5,066 measurements of each in 3,462 participants, 1,245 of whom died during follow-up. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The genetic basis of adult-onset multiple sclerosis (MS) is well-studied, but less is known about pediatric-onset MS (pedMS), comprising approximately 5% of all MS onsets. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have demonstrated evidence for a causal association between MS and both 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] serum levels and genetic variation related to vitamin D receptor (VDR) binding. The objective was to identify whether VDR binding variants (VDR-BVs) previously implicated in adult-onset MS were associated with pedMS using genetic instrumental variables (GIVs).

Colpodella species are free-living predatory protists that prey on algae, ciliates and bodonids using myzocytosis. Colpodella species have been reported in human and animal infections. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers targeting 18S rRNA genes of Cryptosporidium and piroplasms have identified Colpodella species in arthropods, host blood and feces, demonstrating the phylogenetic closeness of Colpodella species to the apicomplexa. However, in human, animal and arthropod hosts, the life cycle stages of Colpodella are unknown. Background: Type one Diabetes Mellitus-(T1DM) can be accompanied with cognitive impairments due to dysglycemic states including hyperglycemia, hypoglycemic states, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This study evaluates cognitive functions in children with T1DM and examines the impact of factors associated with diabetes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 children with T1DM (6–14 years) and 100 agematched non-diabetic controls at the National Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Cairo. Cognitive function was assessed using the Arabic Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale. Glycemic control (HbA1C ≥ 7%) and DKA history were analyzed. This report investigates the perceptions of college students regarding the benefits and drawbacks of maintaining back burner relationships online, with a specific focus on gender-based differences. A mixed-methods study design was utilized. Participants included 762 undergraduate students (71% female, 71% Caucasian, 92% heterosexual) from communication courses at a Southwestern university. Participants completed a Qualtrics survey, and data were analyzed using content analysis with a focus on thematic coding. Inter-coder reliability was established at 98%. Results identified distinct gender differences in the benefits and drawbacks of back burner relationships. The success of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in treating Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and the risk factors associated with mortality remain uncertain. Methods: We describe the survival outcomes at discharge of the largest SLE cohort on ECMO support. We performed a retrospective cohort study of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry database from 2012 to 2022. Pediatric and adult survivor groups were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the primary study outcome of survival to hospital discharge. Hand hygiene (HH) in school settings can reduce the spread of infectious diseases and student absenteeism due to illness. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization recommended HH as a public health measure to prevent disease transmission. Understanding school staff's experiences with school-based programs is important for future program development and improvement. In this review, we discuss how mutations in glioma are associated with prognosis and treatment efficacy. A fascinating characteristic of glioma and all cancers is that while common growth and developmental pathways are altered, the characteristic mutations are distinct depending on the specific type of tumor with concomitant prognoses. Next-generation sequencing, precision medicine, and artificial intelligence are boosting the employment of molecular biomarkers in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Understanding the biological underpinnings of distinct mutations on critical signaling pathways is crucial for developing novel therapies for glioma.
