Sensory cells often adopt specific morphologies that aid in the detection of external stimuli. Merkel cells encode gentle touch stimuli in vertebrate skin and adopt a reproducible shape characterized by spiky actin-rich microvilli that emanate from the cell surface. The mechanisms by which Merkel cells acquire this stereotyped morphology from keratinocyte progenitors are unknown. Here, we establish that dendritic Merkel cells (dMCs) express atonal homolog 1a (atoh1a), extend dynamic filopodial processes, and arise in transient waves during zebrafish skin development and regeneration. Purpose: Survivorship care is vital to screen for and manage late effects, yet follow-up remains suboptimal. We examined factors associated with long-term survivor clinic (LTSC) nonattendance, delayed initiation, and disengagement at a large, diverse pediatric cancer center.

Methods: We analyzed outcomes in 1138 survivorship-eligible childhood cancer survivors diagnosed between 2011 and 2019. Outcomes included (1) LTSC nonattendance (no visit ≥ 2 years post-treatment), (2) delayed LTSC visit initiation (first visit > 5 years from end of treatment), and (3) LTSC visit disengagement (no follow-up after initial LTSC visit). Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are an important class of cancer treatment. Endocrine immune-related adverse events (E-irAEs) account for a significant proportion of irAEs in ICI-treated patients. Diagnosing E-irAEs accurately and timely can be challenging in the absence of clear categorization and standardization across oncology, endocrinology and other specialties. While existing guidelines provide some broad directions to diagnosis and management, they lack clarity on irAE-specific symptom evaluation and work-up, as well as assessment of severity. These limitations can then impact triage, time-sensitive management and care escalation to specialists such as oncoendocrinologists. Human speech perception is multisensory, integrating auditory information from the talker's voice with visual information from the talker's face. BOLD fMRI studies have implicated the superior temporal gyrus (STG) in processing auditory speech and the superior temporal sulcus (STS) in integrating auditory and visual speech, but as an indirect hemodynamic measure, fMRI is limited in its ability to track the rapid neural computations underlying speech perception. Using stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) electrodes, we directly recorded from the STG and STS in 42 epilepsy patients (25F, 17M). BACKGROUND: The 2023-2024 influenza season included sustained elevated activity from December 2023 to February 2024 and continued activity through May 2024. Influenza A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and B viruses circulated during the season.

METHODS: During 1 September 2023 to 31 May 2024, a multistate sentinel surveillance network of 24 medical centers in 20 US states enrolled adults aged ≥18 years hospitalized with acute respiratory illness. Consistent with a test-negative design, cases tested positive for influenza viruses by molecular or antigen test, and controls tested negative for influenza viruses and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Acute myocardial infarction from a vegetation is a rare complication of infective endocarditis. Thrombolysis, percutaneous coronary intervention with balloon angioplasty, stenting, and thromboaspiration, and surgery have all been described in this challenging clinical scenario. A woman with staphylococcal bioprosthetic aortic valve infective endocarditis developed acute myocardial infarction due to a vegetation invading the left main coronary artery, which was successfully managed with percutaneous thromboaspiration.

This article introduces the types and prevalence of trafficking, outlines legal and ethical responsibilities, and provides clinical red flags, case scenarios, and actionable strategies for screening and reporting. Myths that hinder detection are also addressed.
