Hospitalized patients frequently experience poor sleep quality due to clinical activities that occur during typical sleeping hours such as vital sign checks and medication administration. These nighttime disruptions negatively impact patient recovery times and decrease patient satisfaction. This evidence-based practice evaluated if restructuring nighttime clinical activities would minimize sleep disturbances and improve sleep quality in hospitalized patients. Patient surveys were used to assess the frequency of nighttime awakenings as well as the different sources of these awakenings. Post Discharge Phone Calls Improve Compliance And Reduce Return Visits, Carley Dowdy, Avery Greer

This evidence based practice project evaluated the effectiveness of implementing a policy of post-discharge phone calls within 24 hours of the first phone call and 72 of the second phone call by a nurse. The nurse provides assessment and education for the patient as well as answers any questions by the patient. Implementing the policy improves patient compliance, enhances satisfaction, and reduces unnecessary emergency department return visits. Evidence from multiple studies demonstrated that post-discharge phone calls significantly decrease return rates and improve patient compliance and satisfaction. Nevada ranks 51st nationally in youth mental health access and services, underscoring persistent shortages and disparities across the state. Nearly one in four youths aged 12–17 (23.5%) experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, and 73% did not receive treatment. Approximately 34,000 Nevada youths have reported suicidal thoughts—an urgent call for prevention and coordinated support.

During the 2024–2025 school year, 31.3% of Clark County School District students were chronically absent (missing 10% or more of school days), a challenge closely linked to mental health struggles and socioeconomic barriers.

Purpose of Review: This review synthesizes recent developments in vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for stroke rehabilitation from 2021–2025, emphasizing the transition from experimental approaches to clinical implementation following FDA approval of implantable VNS. Recent Findings: The 2021 FDA approval of the Vivistim Paired VNS System marked a watershed moment in stroke neuromodulation, providing the first regulatory-approved VNS therapy for upper extremity motor recovery. Long-term follow-up studies demonstrate sustained benefits at one year, with 66% of patients achieving clinically meaningful improvements. Concurrently, investigational transcutaneous approaches continue to evolve, though they remain limited by protocol heterogeneity and anatomical specificity concerns. Summary: Implantable …

This pilot project addressed gaps in CPR preparedness, early recognition, timely response, and confidence among nurse residents. The goal was to develop, implement, and evaluate a competency-based code blue simulation to strengthen the residents’ knowledge and skills. CONTEXT: In animal models, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is associated with increased Roux limb intestinal glucose uptake that may contribute to early metabolic benefits, though prospective clinical studies are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that Roux limb glucose uptake would increase relative to baseline in a cohort of patients undergoing RYGB. Despite the importance of diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) in managing DM, patients are often not educated on this important strategy. Introduction: Firearm access and associated risk behaviors (i.e., firearm storage and carriage) are established factors that increase the risk of firearm-related injuries. While extant research has demonstrated associations between singular substance use and these risks, little is known regarding the impact of polysubstance use on these outcomes. Background: Justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face heightened relapse risks during the reentry period. While medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are effective, long-term recovery also depends on psychological and structural supports, including situational confidence (perceived ability to resist substance use in high-risk situations) and recovery capital (the internal and external resources that support recovery).

Methods: This cross-sectional study examined situational confidence and its association with recovery capital among 107 justice-involved adults receiving MOUD in an urban jail in Texas. BACKGROUND: Staged palliation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and variants begins with the Norwood or hybrid procedure. Hybrid palliation is used in a minority of cases and often reserved for high-risk patients. Stented hybrid (SH) comprises bilateral pulmonary artery bands and ductal stenting, and medical hybrid (MH) comprises bilateral pulmonary artery bands and prostaglandins. Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute polyradiculoneuropathy in which preceding infections often elicit the production of antibodies that target peripheral nerve antigens, principally gangliosides. Anti-ganglioside antibodies are thought to play a key role in the clinical diversity of the disease and can be helpful in clinical practice. Extensive research into clinical associations of individual anti-ganglioside antibody specificities has been performed. The Nerivio remote electrical neuromodulation (REN) device, which is FDA-cleared for ages 8 and above, was evaluated in this study to assess real-world perceptions among patients in a pediatric neurology clinic. Introduction: Intraoperative anaesthesia handoffs represent a risk point in the care of surgical patients. Although often necessary to prevent fatigue, improve vigilance and optimise operational efficiency, critical information can be lost, potentially leading to postoperative complications. Structured handoffs can increase the transfer of knowledge during intraoperative anaesthesia handoffs, improving their quality. We therefore propose to test the primary hypothesis that a semi-structured intraoperative anaesthesia handoff cognitive aid reduces the number of serious 30-day complications in surgical patients.

Aims: The risk of pregnancy in women with heritable thoracic aortic disease (HTAD) is estimated to be high, but supporting data are scarce. The aim of this study is to prospectively investigate pregnancy outcomes to improve patient management and care.

Methods and results: The Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac disease (ROPAC) III is a prospective global registry including pregnant women with known aortic pathology between 2018 and 2023. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer share multiple risk factors and are the leading causes of morbidity and death worldwide. This study aims to examine historical and projected trends of the combined CVD-cancer global estimates and their shared risk factors.

Methods: Death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with CVDs, cancers, and their risk factors were obtained from the GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2021 study. Historical estimates from 1990 to 2021 and forecast data from 2025 to 2050 were examined across age groups, regions, sociodemographic index, and sex.

Background: Primary hypertension in childhood tracks into adulthood and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Studies conducted in individuals aged < 18 years, an age group without many of the confounding comorbid cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults, provide an opportunity to explore early cardiovascular target-organ injury.

Methods: Youths (n=132, mean age, 15.8 years) were stratified by blood pressure (BP) as low-BP, mid-BP, and high-BP and by left ventricular mass index as low-and high left ventricular mass index. Systemic circulating RNA, microRNA, and methylation profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and deep proteome profiles in serum were determined using high-throughput sequencing techniques. In vitro cell culture experiments assessed angiotensin II- and microRNA-mediated Vash1 (vasohibin-1 protein) regulation and Vash1-mediated hypertrophic response.

Childhood trauma is a risk factor for bipolar disorder, but the biological mechanisms of this association remain incompletely defined. Gray matter differences observed after trauma exposure overlap with those reported in bipolar disorder, suggesting that the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder might be mediated through brain morphology.

Our goal was to determine whether cortical thickness, cortical surface or subcortical volume mediate the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder. Background: Traditional East Asian medicine (TM) is widely used in Korea and other East Asian countries. However, the effects of TM treatment on acute ischemic stroke (AIS) outcomes remain unclear, as previous studies lacked a sufficient sample size, a consecutive series design, or a prospective outcome capture approach. BACKGROUND: Same-day discharge (SDD) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may be altered when complications occur. We sought to determine whether risk of the most common complication, acute kidney injury (AKI), is associated with SDD in practice.

In this study, for the first time rat plasma microsampling was carried out by means of in situ-generated volumetric dried plasma spot (vDPS) technology and applied to the determination of the neuroprotective agent edaravone and its sulphate and glucuronide metabolites. Sampling was performed using Telimmune® plasma separation cards (vPSC), which allow the formation of volumetrically accurate dried plasma spots (3 µL) from blood drops deposited on them. After accelerated forced drying and solvent extraction in methanol, drying and redissolution, analytes were baseline separated and quantified through an original HPLC-MS/MS analytical method.
