Comparisons Of Preoperative Blood Pressures In Surgical Patients, Brian Stacy, Kenn B Daratha Aug 2019

Comparisons Of Preoperative Blood Pressures In Surgical Patients, Brian Stacy, Kenn B Daratha

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background Surgical patients expect anesthesia providers to provide high quality care. Blood pressure variability must be mitigated by establishing the patient’s blood pressure baseline and sustaining it through surgery. A consensus has not been established on which blood pressure measurement should be used as the patient’s baseline. Blood pressures before surgery in multiple care settings have been shown to vary. This may result in differences in drug and fluid administration, depending on the blood pressure considered baseline by the anesthesia provider. The purpose of this observational evidence-based practice project was to compare mean blood pressures leading up to surgery among …

Intraoperative Hypotension In Non-Cardiac Surgery Patients At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Genna Ledrew, Kenn B Daratha

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background Intraoperative Hypotension (IOH) during non-cardiac surgery is a common side effect of anesthesia that is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI), myocardial injury (MI), mortality, and other adverse outcomes1,3,4. These risks increase as the duration and severity of IOH exposure increase3,4. Blood pressure is a modifiable risk factor of mortality and organ damage that can be readily treated by the anesthesia provider2 . Limiting IOH can improve patient outcomes and produce monetary savings5 . The objective of this project is to report the incidence of IOH at a large tertiary teaching hospital, and extrapolate the risks of mortality and …

Patient navigation has been proposed to combat cancer disparities in vulnerable populations. Vulnerable populations often have poorer cancer outcomes and lower levels of screening, adherence, and treatment. Navigation has been studied in various cancers, but few studies have assessed navigation in lung cancer. Additionally, there is a lack of consistency in metrics to assess the quality of navigation programs. The authors conducted a systematic review of published cancer screening studies to identify quality metrics used in navigation programs, as well as to recommend standardized metrics to define excellence in lung cancer navigation. The authors included 26 studies evaluating navigation metrics …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The lemurs of Madagascar are threatened by human activities. We present the first molecular detection of canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in a wild non-human primate, the mouse lemur (Microcebus rufus). Zoonotic D. immitis infection has been associated with clinical pathology that includes serious and often fatal cardiac and pulmonary reactions. With human encroachment and associated increases in free-roaming dog populations in Madagascar, we examined lemurs for zoonotic canid pathogens. D. immitis presents a new potential conservation threat to lemurs. We highlight the need for wide-ranging and effective interventions, particularly near protected areas, to address this growing …

Predicting Residency Match Outcomes For Fourth-Year Medical Students., Jacob Shreffler Aug 2019

Predicting Residency Match Outcomes For Fourth-Year Medical Students., Jacob Shreffler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An important goal for undergraduate medical education program leaders is to prepare their medical students to successfully match during the National Residency Match Program (Gauer & Jackson, 2017). Due to the recent increase in applications submitted during the residency process, it is critical for medical education programs to better understand the factors and attributes of those medical students who are successfully matching (Liang, Curtin, Signer, & Sawoia, 2017). As there is a larger number of medical students now enrolled than positions available for residency, the number of unmatched seniors is expected to rise (Bumsted, Schenider, & Deiorio, 2017). Additionally, the …

Cannabidiol And The Remainder Of The Plant Extract Modulate The Effects Of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol On Fear Memory Reconsolidation, Anthony Murkar, Pam Kent, Christian Cayer, Jon James, Tony Durst, Zul Merali

Brain and Mind Institute

Background: Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, a CB1 receptor agonist) and Cannabidiol (CBD, a non-competitive antagonist of endogenous CB1 and CB2 ligands) are two primary components of Cannabis species, and may modulate fear learning in mammals. The CB1 receptor is widely distributed throughout the cortex and some limbic regions typically associated with fear learning. Humans with posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) have widespread upregulation of CB1 receptor density and reduced availability of endogenous cannabinoid anandamide, suggesting a role for the endocannabinoid system in PTSD. Pharmacological blockade of memory reconsolidation following recall of a conditioned response modulates the expression of learned fear and may represent …

Inhibition Of Urothelial Carcinoma By Type I Interferon Activation Of The Innate And Adaptive Immune Response, Devin Plote

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the first line therapy for bladder cancer patients with non-invasive disease. However, roughly 40% of patients exhibit no response, tumor recurrence or tumor progression following BCG treatment. Type I interferon (IFN-I) has potent anti-tumor effects against urothelial carcinoma (UC) and may be an alternative treatment option for patients who do not respond to BCG standard of care. However, the mechanisms that mediate the IFN-I-stimulated immune responses against UC are not fully elucidated. Herein, we evaluated the anti-tumor mechanisms of IFN-I in UC by use of adenoviral interferon-α (Ad-IFNα/Syn3) in human patients, and poly(I:C) or lentiviral IFNa …

Cervical Cancer In Tanzania: A Systematic Review Of Current Challenges In Six Domains., Ava S Runge, Megan E Bernstein, Alexa N Lucas, Krishnansu S Tewari

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in Tanzania. After excluding human immunodeficiency virus, lower respiratory infections, malaria, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis, cervical cancer kills more women than any other form of illness in the country. Unfortunately, Tanzania has a low doctor-to-patient ratio (1:50,000) and nearly 7000 women die each year from this disease. The clinical problem is further magnified by the country's lack of resources and prevailing poverty, sporadic cervical cancer screening, prevalence of high-risk oncogenic human papillomavirus subtypes, and relatively high rates of human immunodeficiency virus co-infection. In recent years, addressing the cervical cancer problem has become a …

The Basic Trait Of Antagonism: An Unfortunately Underappreciated Construct, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Antagonism, the low pole of Agreeableness, references traits related to immorality, combativeness, grandiosity, callousness, and distrustfulness. It is a robust correlate of externalizing behaviors such as antisocial behavior, aggression, and substance use; in fact, in many cases, it is the strongest trait correlate. It represents the core of many important and impactful psychopathological constructs (e.g., psychopathy, antisocial and narcissistic personality disorders). It is also central to models of general and disordered personality, psychopathology, and interpersonal behavior. As Neuroticism is core to understanding the intense distress and suffering that comes with internalizing disorders, Antagonism is core to understanding the impairment and …
