Patient And Provider Perspectives On Sexual History Taking During Gynecological Care: A Pilot Study In An Academic Family Medical Setting In New York City, Ashley M. Chastain

Dissertations and Theses

Background: In the United States (US), women face a number of serious issues concerning sexual health. Current surveillance data indicates that overall rates of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasing rapidly. While rates of new diagnoses have decreased, the risks of acquiring HIV are still relatively high for some females, specifically Black/African-American women. In New York City (NYC), where this dissertation research was conducted, similar HIV/STI rates exist among females of reproductive age (aged 15-44). Among women in the US, there are also high estimated rates of other sexual health problems, such as sexual anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and intimate …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Compromise in inspiratory breathing following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by damage to descending bulbospinal axons originating in the rostral ventral respiratory group (rVRG) and consequent denervation and silencing of phrenic motor neurons (PhMNs) that directly control diaphragm activation. In a rat model of high-cervical hemisection SCI, we performed systemic administration of an antagonist peptide directed against phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), a central inhibitor of neuron-intrinsic axon growth potential. PTEN antagonist peptide (PAP4) robustly restored diaphragm function, as determined with electromyography (EMG) recordings in living SCI animals. PAP4 promoted substantial, long-distance regeneration of injured rVRG axons through …

Science Of Lifestyle; Strategies For Change, Raza Ur Rahman

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Since the start of 21st century the focus of medical treatment is changing from curative to the preventive medicine and now functional recovery and quality of life are the outcome of curative medicine. These new outcomes of modern medicine can be achieved through adopting the strategies that enhance wellness of patient. The methods of enhancing wellness are in practice since centuries and their effectiveness has been handed down through word of mouth and tradition. They continue to evolve and were first documented in 1970s, by Canyon Ranch1, as a strategy to improve health through the principles of a healthy lifestyle. …

Post-Stroke Seizures: A Clinically Oriented Analysis, Sajid Hameed, Haris Hakeem, Mohammad Wasay

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Stroke is an important cause of secondary epilepsy, especially in the elderly. Not only does this impact morbidity and mortality in an adverse way, it also prolongs the hospitalization. Various risk factors have been described in literature that increase the risk of seizures in a patient with stroke. Post stroke seizures fall on a spectrum of acute symptomatic and unprovoked seizures with varying pathophysiology and risk of subsequent development of epilepsy. Hence, the treatment approaches are also different. However, randomized controlled trials are lacking to guide monitoring and management strategies in post stroke seizures and the approaches remain individualized to …

The Role Of Autophagy In Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury In Isolated Rat Hearts, Aloysius C. Ibe Ii

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Autophagy is a housekeeping process used to remove damaged cytoplasmic constituents and protein aggregates. However, a debate persists on whether autophagy is beneficial or detrimental when an ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) insult occurs in the heart. This study tested the effects of autophagy enhancers (rapamycin and trehalose) and an autophagy inhibitor (3-methyladenine) on cardiac function and infarct size after global ischemia (30 minutes) and reperfusion (45 minutes) when given prior to ischemia (pre-treatment) or at the beginning of reperfusion (post-treatment). Rapamycin (25nM) pre-treatment and post-treatment significantly restored final left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) to 75.4±9.1% and 60±5% of initial baseline respectively (both …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Cervical cancer is common in Kenyan women. Cofactors in addition to infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) are likely to be important in causing cervical cancer, because only a small percentage of HPV-infected women will develop this malignancy. Kenyan women are exposed to dietary aflatoxin, a potent carcinogen and immunosuppressive agent, which may be such a cofactor.

Methods: Demographics, behavioral data, plasma, and cervical swabs were collected from 88 human immunodeficiency virus-uninfected Kenyan women without cervical dysplasia. Human papillomavirus detection was compared between women with or without plasma aflatoxin B1-lysine (AFB1-lys) and evaluated in relation to AFB1-lys concentration.

Drug Safety Scientometrics Overview Highlights Public Health Issues, Philippe Gorry, Enrique Seoane-Vazquez

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"Drug Safety (DS) also known as Pharmacovigilance, is the science of monitoring ADR (Cobert, 2012). Despite that DS has a social welfare function, it has not been the study of any scientometrics analysis... Our goal is to fill this gap by mapping the DS literature. This analysis might highlight some trends, the role of drug regulatory and firms in diffusing information, understand better some DS controversial events, help scholars in mastering pharmacovigilance literature, and it contribute to further development on literature-based discovery of ADR [adverse drug reactions] with the help of natural language processing."

Anaesthesiology, East Africa

Background: The use of drugs to attenuate the haemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation is the standard of care during elective surgery. Current evidence is conflicting concerning the best agent and optimal dose for this purpose. In the majority of cases, fentanyl is widely utilized to attenuate haemodynamic responses. Ketamine, an established available drug, has been scarcely studied in this regard at low doses and against varying doses of other common agents.

Objective: To compare the overall occurrence of hypertension and tachycardia immediately pre-intubation (post-induction) until 10 minutes post intubation between the study group receiving fentanyl at 1.0 µg/kg …

Inflammation, Depression And Non-Adherence Correlates In Persons On Hemodialysis, Kathleen Fulmer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The hemodialysis patient is at risk for a high inflammatory state as evidenced by the elevation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 which has been linked to lower serotonin levels and development of depression. The biological and psychological stress of living with End Stage Renal Disease on hemodialysis increases the risk for depression which is the leading psychological disorder affecting these patients which is also underdiagnosed and under-treated. The phenomenon of depression can manifest itself in the maladaptive behavior of non-adherence which has been associated with increased mortality, morbidity and decreased quality of life for the hemodialysis patient. The purpose of …

Association Of Nurses’ Sanctification Of Work With Work-Related Outcomes And Patient Satisfaction, Hazel M. Ada Sep 2019

Association Of Nurses’ Sanctification Of Work With Work-Related Outcomes And Patient Satisfaction, Hazel M. Ada

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nurses working in hospitals face many intrinsic stressors, including widespread job dissatisfaction, burnout, and frustration. These challenges, in turn, may affect patient care. Nursing often attracts individuals who wish to serve others, and some may find the expression of spirituality on the job helpful in finding meaning, satisfaction, and value in their work (Kociszewski, 2004). Sanctification of work (SoW) is a promising facet of spirituality defined by researchers as an individual’s experience of their work as a manifestation of God or sacred qualities that affects their effectiveness and engagement on the job (Walker, Jones, Wuensch, Aziz, and Cope, 2008). In …
