Appalachian Research Day: Come Sit On The Porch [2019], Frances J. Feltner, Melissa Slone, Beth Bowling

Center of Excellence in Rural Health Presentations

Rural Appalachian communities in eastern Kentucky suffer from some of the Nation’s most concerning health disparities. Community-based research can be an effective way to address health disparities by identifying problems and sharing workable solutions. However, challenges exist in recruiting and retaining research participants in rural populations that can often be difficult to reach. Partnerships between researchers and communities are essential to the success of the research process, particularly translation of findings back into the community.

Background

Eight rural hospitals have closed in Georgia within the last decade, and more are financially distressed. In 2016, Georgia legislation created a state income tax credit for individuals and corporations that donate to qualifying non-profit rural hospitals of their choice. This law, the first of its kind in the US, was intended to provide struggling hospitals with financial support to improve viability. Using a mixed- methods approach, this study assessed the perspective of hospital executives concerning the program, examined community awareness of the program, and evaluated how hospitals used the money to enhance access to care for rural populations.

Periodization For Massive Strength Gains, Benjamin L. Yanes Oct 2019

Periodization For Massive Strength Gains, Benjamin L. Yanes

Student Publications

In order to create the perfect resistance training program for their athletes, coaches must master the ability to control all variables of training over time in order to maximize physiological responses - this is a concept known as periodization (3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26).

Periodization was first established in Russia, after the conclusion of the 1956 Olympic games (7, 21). Though simple in its principle and aim, periodization is frequently misunderstood due to the hyper-specific research that surrounds it (3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 15, 21, 23, 25). Over the last five decades, researchers …

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Anastasia M. Georgetson Oct 2019

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Anastasia M. Georgetson

Student Publications

The word amyotrophic is derived from Greek, and means “without nourishment to muscles”, lateral means to the sides and sclerosis means hardened (“What is ALS?,” n.d.). First described by Jean-Martin Charcot in the 1800s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive degenerative motor neuron disease. Motor neurons are very important cells, and extremely unique since they can be very long with some motor neurons having a length of over a meter (“Disease Mechanisms,” n.d.).

About 5-10% of the cases of ALS are inherited, which is known as familial ALS or fALS, and it is known as autosomal dominant in these …

Myofascial Release, Colin S. Hetherington Oct 2019

Myofascial Release, Colin S. Hetherington

Student Publications

Fascia represents an intricate system of connective tissue that permeates throughout the human body. Its matrix of continuous fibers support, protect, divide and suspend both superficial and deep anatomical structures. While once thought to be a passive mesh network, new evidence suggests fascia is much more complicated. Now recognized as an active physiological component of the human body, myofascial health and function has been given much attention clinically. Of the techniques aimed to treat and restore fascial structure and function, myofascial release has been found to promote stability, increase range of motion and most importantly alleviate musculoskeletal pain. This form …

Today's Fibromyalgia, Mckenzie K. Glennon Oct 2019

Today's Fibromyalgia, Mckenzie K. Glennon

Student Publications

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal disorder which results in widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and emotional distress (CDC, 2017). It is also associated with abnormal pain processing. About 2% of US adults have Fibromyalgia, and the disease is more common in middle-aged women, particularly those who have other illnesses like Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis (CDC, 2017). The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it is likely a combination of genetics, infections and physical and emotional trauma. Since the exact cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, treatment options vary. Medication, stress management techniques and an exercise plan are all examples …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Effect On Wound Healing And Traumatic Brain Injuries, Sara L. Seuffert Oct 2019

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Effect On Wound Healing And Traumatic Brain Injuries, Sara L. Seuffert

Student Publications

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a new form of treatment being used to heal and help improve symptoms of traumatic brain injuries, external wounds, and strokes. HBOT helps to completely saturate hemoglobin with oxygen, which then allows for a larger capacity of oxygen to be delivered to the damaged tissues. Tissue wounds benefit from this HBOT because of the increase in oxygen supply to the damaged area, helping to combat hypoxia, which is preventing proper wound healing. The increase in oxygen allows for an increase in myofibroblast differentiation to allow the healing process to continue. HBOT has also proven to increase …

Cardiovascular, Neuromuscular, And Immune Responses And Adaptations To Blood Flow Restriction Training (Bfr), Hallie S. Wilk Oct 2019

Cardiovascular, Neuromuscular, And Immune Responses And Adaptations To Blood Flow Restriction Training (Bfr), Hallie S. Wilk

Student Publications

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR) is an innovative training technique that has recently stupefied scientific research. Experiments continuously question the effectiveness of the phenomenon, which claims the ability to induce similar muscular hypertrophy and strength of higher-load resistance training, despite a resistance level of around 20-30% of an individual’s 1RM (O’Halloran, 2014; Scott, 2016). The most crucial aspect of BFR is that an individual needs to be engaging in physical activity while restricted by some sort of wrapping device. These devices could be a cuff, elastic knee wrap, or more, as long as there’s decreased blood flow to the recruited …

The Importance Of Shared Language In Rural Behavioral Health Interventions: An Exploratory Linguistic Analysis, Michele Staton, Jennifer Cramer, Robert Walker, Claire Snell-Rood, Athena Kheibari

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

A focus on the use of shared language to enhance congruence in interventionist-client dialogue is missing from traditional research on evidence-based practices and rural behavioral health. This study incorporates qualitative interactional sociolinguistics, which includes discourse analysis (typically written or audio recordings of face-to-face encounters with 11 clients and a study interventionist), to describe those speech patterns in a broad sense (dialect), as well as more specific use of communicative strategies to increase parity in the interaction between a rural interventionist delivering an evidence-based practice in the context of a research study with rural women opioid users in a non-therapeutic context. …
