Boomers And Fraudsters: A Closer Look At The Financial Elder Abuse Cycle In America, Ryan E. Brown
Boomers And Fraudsters: A Closer Look At The Financial Elder Abuse Cycle In America, Ryan E. Brown
Marriott Student Review
In 2011, a landmark study was published by the Metlife Mature Market Institute claiming that nearly $3 billion disappears from the wallets and bank accounts of senior citizens annually. More surprising is that a similar study reported that figure could be as high as $36 billion. Because so many seniors let incidents of fraud or financial deceit go unreported, there is a huge discrepancy in annual reporting. This contributes to the overall lack of understanding we have of elder financial abuse, or why seniors continue to lose to fraudsters and scam artists. In a brief overview of financial elder abuse …

The Tail Wagging The Dog: Positive Attitude Towards Livestock Guarding Dogs Do Not Mitigate Pastoralists’ Opinions Of Wolves Or Grizzly Bears, Daniel Kinka, Julie K. Young
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
While the re-establishment of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and wolves (Canis lupus) in the American West marks a success for conservation, it has been contentious among pastoralists. Coincidentally, livestock guarding dogs (LGDs; Canis familiaris) have been widely adopted by producers of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) in the United States to mitigate livestock depredation by wild carnivores. We surveyed pastoralists to measure how experience with and attitudes towards LGDs related to attitudes towards livestock predators, and found positive responses regarding LGDs and negative responses regarding wolves and grizzly bears. The more respondents agreed that LGDs reduce the need for lethal management …

Faculty Research 2019
BACKGROUND: Alterations to cellular and molecular programs with brain aging result in cognitive impairment and susceptibility to neurodegenerative disease. Changes in DNA methylation patterns, an epigenetic modification required for various CNS functions are observed with brain aging and can be prevented by anti-aging interventions, but the relationship of altered methylation to gene expression is poorly understood.
RESULTS: Paired analysis of the hippocampal methylome and transcriptome with aging of male and female mice demonstrates that age-related differences in methylation and gene expression are anti-correlated within gene bodies and enhancers. Altered promoter methylation with aging was found to be generally un-related to …

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in females, both in developed and developing countries. Pakistan has the highest breast cancer incidence rate in Asia. Guidelines recommend screening for detecting breast cancer with mammography and ultrasonography (US). Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a newer technique that can aid additional characterization of breast lesions.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of breast ultrasound elastography in differentiating benign from malignant breast lesions using histology diagnosis as the gold standard.
Materials and methods: The study was conducted at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Jinnah Post Graduate Medical …

Population Health Research Brief Series
Ninety percent of young adults in the U.S. are on social media, with the majority using these sites at least once a day. This issue brief explores how excessive use of social media can lead to addiction, loneliness, depression, decreased self-esteem, and unfulfilling relationships.

What is the significance of bone marrow examination in presence of peripheral cytopenias? It is still regarded as a mandatory investigation to diagnose hematological disorders. In this case, bone marrow trephine was initially done as a diagnosis of exclusion for ITP, whereas it revealed multiple granulomas suggesting mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Purpose: This project aimed to determine if change occurs over time for impairments of balance, range of motion (ROM), endurance, and strength of children with cerebral palsy (CP), by Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels.
Methods: Measurements were completed in 77 children at two sessions (T1, T2) on average 5.8 years apart. Mean ages were 2.9 years (SD .9) and 8.7 years (SD 1.1) at T1 and T2, respectively.
Results: Significant differences were noted from T1 to T2 for some children (GMFCS levels I, II, and III/IV: balance increased, GMFCS levels I and II: strength increased, and GMFCS levels …

Association Of Urine Levels Of C-Reactive Protein With Clinical Outcomes In Patients With Pneumonia: A Pilot Study, Subathra Marimuthu, Vidyulata Salunkhe, Stephen P. Furmanek, Leslie A Wolf
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Finding relevant biomarkers as a potential predictor of severity for patients hospitalized with community acquired pneumonia (CAP), in addition to the clinical scoring system, could advance progress towards more effective patient management. The inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP), which is elevated in the pathogenesis of many infectious diseases, may be a key biomarker target for CAP. Previous studies have shown that serum CRP may be a useful diagnostic marker for pneumonia in hospitalized patients with acute respiratory symptoms. The main aims of this study were to determine the correlation between serum and urine CRP levels in hospitalized patients with CAP, …

Background: The unique physicochemical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have led to many industrial applications. Due to their low density and small size, MWCNT are easily aerosolized in the workplace making respiratory exposures likely in workers. The International Agency for Research on Cancer designated the pristine Mitsui-7 MWCNT (MWCNT-7) as a Group 2B carcinogen, but there was insufficient data to classify all other MWCNT. Previously, MWCNT exposed to high temperature (MWCNT-HT) or synthesized with nitrogen (MWCNT-ND) have been found to elicit attenuated toxicity; however, their genotoxic and carcinogenic potential are not known. Our aim was to measure the genotoxicity …

Play is the primary occupation of all children and is vital for the development of physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills. Children of all abilities benefit from play and should all have equal opportunity to use and explore playground equipment. Many community playgrounds are limiting and create barriers which do not allow all children to use them. It is important that occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) step up and utilize their skills and knowledge to bring about a change.
Occupational therapy practitioners, with their knowledge of environmental barriers, understanding of disability and specific knowledge of activities, are in an ideal position to …

Background
Although the preferred route for transcatheter aortic valve replacement is through the femoral artery, alternatives remain necessary for patients with obstructive iliofemoral disease. Our valve team has developed a large experience using the carotid artery as a primary alternative vascular access approach for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We aim to compare short-term outcomes by access route in a single-center, high-volume, transcarotid (TC) TAVR program.
Methods
All patients undergoing TAVR between September 2012 and September 2018 were included in the study. Baseline demographics and outcomes were obtained from data our institution submitted in compliance with TVT (Transcatheter Valve Therapy) …

Sensory friendly environments support inclusivity for children with autism and their families. Environmental barriers often cause an unpleasant experience for children who experience sensory processing disorders. Occupational therapy practitioners have a role in collaborating with teachers for modifications in the classroom and advocating for sensory friendly events within the community to promote engagement in childhood occupations.

OT services can be utilized to optimize a mother’s function, mobility and engagement during and after pregnancy
OTPs can help women with SCIs fulfill the role of mother by providing
- “training, adaptations, and resources” (para. 14)
- “evaluating and recommending wheelchair seating and positioning” (para. 6)
- Evaluating [mental], physical and environmental barriers in the home and community and recommending modifications (para. 8) (AOTA, 2015)
Current literature indicates that there are limited resources for mothers living with SCIs, especially regarding care of infants
Additional research is necessary to “examine the most effective strategies and adaptations” (p.2)
