Reproductive Health

To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is one of the most prominent issues world leaders and governments must address. In Senegal, estimates from the 2017 Senegal Demographic and Health Survey show that almost a quarter of women aged 15–49 have undergone FGM/C, while 14 percent of girls aged 0–14 years have been cut. Given the many interventions that have been implemented in Senegal with the intention of scaling down FGM/C rates, the key question is: To what extent has the practice declined? The aim of this study, as presented in this working paper, was to generate …

Understanding Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Abandonment In Egypt, Nada Wahba, Hania El Banhawi, Amira El Ayouti

Reproductive Health

Although the prevalence of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Egypt among married women aged 15–49 years is high (92 percent), in the most recent (2014) Demographic and Health Survey, prevalence rates appear to be declining among younger cohorts of girls and women. Support for the discontinuation of the practice is more widespread in younger generations, among females, and among those living in urban areas. Variations in attitudes toward FGM/C by education level and wealth status are also documented. While numerous studies have examined the reasons why people practice FGM/C, few studies have examined the characteristics of the individuals who have …

Assessing The Role Of Law In Reducing The Practise Of Fgm/C In Kenya, Agnes K. Meroka-Mutua, Daniel Mwanga, Charles Owuor Olungah

Reproductive Health

Criminalization is an important aspect of anti-FGM/C policies and programs. In countries where FGM/C is practiced, the enactment of a law prohibiting the practice is an important indicator of progress toward abandonment. Criminalization is often seen as playing an important role in the declining prevalence of FGM/C. However, there is not much research on the link between the enactment of laws that prohibit and criminalize FGM/C and declining prevalence of the practice. The objectives of this study, therefore, were to assess the extent to which people obey the law on FGM/C; to investigate the reasons and causes that motivate people …

The Role Of Financial Insecurity And Expectations On Perspectives Of Mental Health Services Among Refugees, Jacqueline M. Siven

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines how perspectives of mental health among refugees are situated within the realities of the refugee resettlement system, a population for which information on this issue is quite limited. Through in-depth interviews and participant observation with Congolese refugees and non-Congolese refugee-serving professionals in a major Florida city, this dissertation examines how perceptions of mental health and mental health services among refugees were affected by financial insecurity and disparities in expectations. Local Congolese refugees expected the American Dream; they believed that once they arrived they would find prosperity through hard work. Instead they experienced frustration and distress because the …

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Purpose

Survivors of breast cancer (BC) on the non-dominant side have more persistent deficits than those with cancer on the dominant limb. What is not known is whether those with BC use their involved upper limbs more, less, or at the same level as women without BC. Accelerometer use offers a quantifiable method to measure activity levels of upper limbs. The purpose of this study was to quantify the activity levels of the non-dominant involved limb among survivors of BC and compare these values to their dominant limb, as well as the non-dominant limb of a control group.

The Role Of Mindset, Impostorism, And Irrational Beliefs In Resident Wellness: Results From The Hca Nationwide Longitudinal Resident Wellness Study, Gregory Guldner, Jason Siegel, Brendon Ellis, Anne Brafford

Medical Education

Background The significant proportion of residents reporting poor levels of well-being has appropriately fueled a call for interventions. Yet the specific constructs that impact well-being have not been well researched and validated in the resident population. Mindset (fixed versus growth), impostorism (the belief that one’s success is fraudulent) and irrational beliefs (dysfunctional beliefs that contribute to emotional pain and anguish) are among individual variables postulated to relate to well-being in a high-pressure educational environment. Each of these constructs is amenable to interventions should they have causal relationships to well-being.

Objectives Our prior research resulted in a statistically validated model of …

Population Health Science Program Doctoral Dissertations

The 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) introduced an era of changing healthcare delivery and utilization, which is still evolving and changing to this day. Healthcare providers and healthcare systems need to identify strategies to provide better care to patients, that results in better patient outcomes, in a cost effective way. One strategy to accomplish this goal is to focus on managing the care of the most vulnerable patients, particularly including pediatric patients with one or more chronic conditions. The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which a behavioral health diagnosis in addition to another chronic condition …

Targeting Trna-Synthetase Interactions Towards Novel Therapeutic Discovery Against Eukaryotic Pathogens, Paul Kelly, Fatemeh Hadi-Nezhad, Dennis Y. Liu, Travis J. Lawrence, Roger G. Linington, Michael Ibba, David H. Ardell

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The development of chemotherapies against eukaryotic pathogens is especially challenging because of both the evolutionary conservation of drug targets between host and parasite, and the evolution of strain-dependent drug resistance. There is a strong need for new nontoxic drugs with broad-spectrum activity against trypanosome parasites such as Leishmania and Trypanosoma. A relatively untested approach is to target macromolecular interactions in parasites rather than small molecular interactions, under the hypothesis that the features specifying macromolecular interactions diverge more rapidly through coevolution. We computed tRNA Class-Informative Features in humans and independently in eight distinct clades of trypanosomes, identifying parasite-specific informative features, …

This mixed-methods, community-based participatory research examines how Senegalese women navigate their sexual and reproductive health care. It seeks …

Comorbid Posttraumatic Stress And Substance Use Disorders: Treatment Guidelines For Counselors, Cameron L. Ortega, Eva Miller Feb 2020

Comorbid Posttraumatic Stress And Substance Use Disorders: Treatment Guidelines For Counselors, Cameron L. Ortega, Eva Miller

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) reported approximately seven to eight people out of 100 will develop PTSD at some point in their lives and an estimated eight million adults will develop PTSD during a given year. It is also estimated between 55-60% of persons diagnosed with PTSD are diagnosed with a substance-use disorder (SUD). However, despite clinical guidelines that increasingly recommend the use of psychotherapies within the same treatment episode for clients with comorbid SUD/PTSD and client preferences for combined PTSD/SUD treatment, clinicians tend to overlook comorbid trauma and substance issues and/or are inclined to provide separate …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Zebrafish can faithfully regenerate injured fins through the formation of a blastema, a mass of proliferative cells that can grow and develop into the lost body part. After amputation, various cell types contribute to blastema formation, where each cell type retains fate restriction and exclusively contributes to regeneration of its own lineage. Epigenetic changes that are associated with lineage restriction during regeneration remain underexplored.

RESULTS: We produce epigenome maps, including DNA methylation and chromatin accessibility, as well as transcriptomes, of osteoblasts and other cells in uninjured and regenerating fins. This effort reveals regeneration as a process of highly dynamic …

Copyright © 2020 the authors Cholinergic inputs originating from the peripheral nervous system regulate the inflammatory immune responses of macrophages during clearance of blood-based pathogens. Because microglia are involved in clearing amyloid and tau pathology from the central nervous system, we hypothesized that cholinergic input originating from the basal forebrain might similarly regulate inflammatory immune responses to these pathologies in the aging brain. To explore this hypothesis, we leveraged the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative dataset. Cognitively normal older male and female human adults were differentiated according to the relative concentration of phosphorylated tau and amyloid in their cerebrospinal fluid, yielding …

Calgranulin proteins are an important class of molecules involved in innate immunity. These members of the S100 class of the EF-hand family of calcium-binding proteins have numerous cellular and antimicrobial functions. One protein in particular, S100A12 (also called EN-RAGE or calgranulin C), is highly abundant in neutrophils during acute inflammation and has been implicated in immune regulation. Structure-function analyses reveal that S100A12 has the capacity to bind calcium, zinc, and copper, processes that contribute to nutritional immunity against invading microbial pathogens. S100A12 is a ligand for the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and CD36, …

Fearless Dominance/Boldness Is Not Strongly Related To Externalizing Behaviors: An Item Response-Based Analysis, Michael L. Crowe, Brandon M. Weiss, Chelsea E. Sleep, Alexandra M. Harriss, Nathan T. Carter, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

There is substantial and ongoing debate regarding the centrality of Fearless Dominance/Boldness (FD/B) to psychopathic personality due, in part, to its generally weak relations with externalizing behaviors. In response to these findings, proponents of FD/B have offered two hypotheses. First, FD/B may have nonlinear associations with externalizing outcomes such that FD/B may lead to resilience at moderate levels, but an overabundance of FD/B will yield maladaptive behavioral outcomes. Second, FD/B may be related to antisocial outcomes when paired with high scores on other psychopathic traits such as self-centered impulsivity, meanness, or disinhibition. The current study tests these two possibilities using …
