Center for Disease Control reports the following as fall risk factors: lower extremity weakness, vision problems, and difficulty maintaining balance during walking. Greatest predictor for a fall, is prior fall within the last year. Injury from a fall leads to: fear of falls, inactivity, atrophy, higher risk for falls. Kouzake and Masani (2008) indicated that improvements in postural sway are attributed to light touch increasing proprioception, rather than through mechanical support. Examples of light touch-enhanced proprioceptive feedback: walls and assistive walking devices. Successful strategy in bimanual tasks?

Synthesis And Characterization Of Hemocompatible Antibiotic Nanoparticles, Elvin Muhindo Walemba

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a causative agent of periodontal disease and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Novel treatment of periodontal disease using nanomaterials can supplement or replace the use of antibiotics and mechanical debridement. Nanomaterials can be optimized for effectiveness and specificity and minimum toxicity. Synthesized Ag nanoparticles stabilized in Pluronic F127 were used to produce bimetallic core/shell Ag/Au nanoparticles with optimized Ag+ release and reduced toxicity. We tested the F127-stabilized nanoparticles for their antimicrobial activity and hemocompatibility in planktonic bacteria and citrated whole blood, respectively. Both Ag and Ag/Au bimetallic nanoparticles inhibited P. gingivalis W83 growth. We then evaluated …

Left Atrial Appendage Printing Process, Areli Reyes, Brandon James Mukai, Mia Noelle Von Knorring

Biomedical Engineering

The left atrial appendage senior design team aims to assist in closing off the left atrial appendage that is susceptible to coagulation due to non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Coagulation in the left atrial appendage (LAA) can be life threatening as it can lead to a stroke. Dr. Chris Porterfield performs a procedure that uses the Boston Scientific Watchman to close the appendage. He finds that sizing the Watchman properly is difficult with limited visuals from live CT scans. He proposed converting the CT scans into a 3D printed model of the left atrial appendage and left atrium so he can visually …

Distance Learning For Neurology: Experiences From Mini-Fellowship In Movement Disorders., Danish Bhatti, John Bertoni

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Sub-speciality training in neurology is not available in Pakistan given lack of trained supervising faculty. Developing trained supervisors by sending faculty abroad for formal fellowships is too slow, resource intense and subject to attrition or brain-drain. Web-based learning methods have been used effectively in training in medicine. Meta-analysis of 201 eligible studies showed large positive effects of E-learning in health professionals compared with no interventions1. There are highly qualified academic neurologists available in developed countries of Pakistani origin providing opportunity to bridge the gap and transfer skills.
