Evaluation Of Extruded Debris Amount During Instrumentation Using Reciprocation Vs. Full Rotation Techniques: In Vitro Study, Belal Taouk, Roula Abiad, Nayer Abo Elsaad
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Apical extrusion of infected debris into the periradicular tissues during endodontic instrumentation may lead to postoperative pain and flare-up. Debris usually contain dentine chips, necrotic pulp tissue, microorganisms and irrigant. The existing studies are inconclusive about which engine-driven system pushes less debris in the apical direction. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the amount of apically extruded debris associated with full rotation single-file nickel–titanium instrumentation systems compared to another system used in reciprocation motion. Methodology: After approval of BAU institutional review board, twenty extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were randomly assigned to two groups (n=10 per group), …

Familial Mediterranean Fever: A General Review, Tarek Houri, Belal Osta, Mouzaya Khoder Agha
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive inherited disease, which is accompanied by recurrent attacks of fever and serositis. It can be distinguished into two types. Type 1, is associated with recurrent short episodes of inflammation and polyserositis; type 2, is characterized by the accumulation of serum amyloid A mainly in the kidney leading to amyloidosis. The etiology of this disease is due to mutations in the MEFV gene, which encodes the protein “pyrin”. These mutations cause the uncontrolled production of proinflammatory cytokines including interleukin 1. Genetic analysis is important to confirm the diagnosis in the patients. Colchicine is …

Survivors of Childhood Brain Tumors (SCBT) are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes compared to the general population. Adiposity is an important risk factor for the development of these outcomes, and identifying biomarkers of adiposity may help the stratification of survivors based on their cardiovascular risk or allow for early screening and interventions to improve cardiometabolic outcomes. Leptin is an adipokine that positively correlates with the adipose mass in the general population and is a predictor of adverse cardiometabolic outcomes, yet its association with adiposity in SCBT has not been studied. The aim of …

Flavonoids And Other Polyphenols Act As Epigenetic Modifiers In Breast Cancer., Priyanga Selvakumar, Aja Badgeley, Paige Murphy, Hina Anwar, Urvashi Sharma, Katharine Lawrence, Ashakumary Lakshmikuttyamma
College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Breast cancer is a common cancer that occurs due to different epigenetic alterations and genetic mutations. Various epidemiological studies have demonstrated an inverse correlation between breast cancer incidence and flavonoid intake. The anti-cancer action of flavonoids, a class of polyphenolic compounds that are present in plants, as secondary metabolites has been a major topic of research for many years. Our review analysis demonstrates that flavonoids exhibit anti-cancer activity against breast cancer occurring in different ethnic populations. Breast cancer subtype and menopausal status are the key factors in inducing the flavonoid's anti-cancer action in breast cancer. The dose is another key …

An Actigraphy-Based Validation Study Of The Sleep Disorder Inventory In The Nursing Home, Gunnhild J. Hjetland, Inger Hilde Nordhus, Ståle Pallesen, Jeffrey Cummings, Rochelle E. Tractenberg, Eirunn Thun, Eirin Kolberg, Elisabeth Flo
School of Medicine Faculty Research
Background: Disrupted sleep is common among nursing home patients with dementia and is associated with increased agitation, depression, and cognitive impairment. Detecting and treating sleep problems in this population are therefore of great importance, albeit challenging. Systematic observation and objective recordings of sleep are time-consuming and resource intensive and self-report is often unreliable. Commonly used proxy-rated scales contain few sleep items, which affects the reliability of the raters' reports. The present study aimed to adapt the proxy-rated Sleep Disorder Inventory (SDI) to a nursing home context and validate it against actigraphy. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 69 nursing home patients, 68% …
