Submaximal Isometric Force Steadiness In People With Multiple Sclerosis Under Single And Dual Task Conditions, Sheri Bunyan
Submaximal Isometric Force Steadiness In People With Multiple Sclerosis Under Single And Dual Task Conditions, Sheri Bunyan
Dissertations (1934 -)
Activities of daily living require steady, non-fatiguing, isometric muscular contractions to maintain postural control and stabilize body segments to facilitate interaction with the environment. Furthermore, typical activities often require simultaneous performance of cognitive and motor tasks. This may challenge people with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system associated with motor and cognitive impairments. Despite functional relevance, isometric force steadiness in both the upper and lower extremities has not been explored in this population. Additionally, dual task experiments in multiple sclerosis have primarily used gait, a dynamic activity, as the motor task. Thus, the purpose of …
Design, Development And Evaluation Of Dual Drug Nanomedicine For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Elham Hatami
Design, Development And Evaluation Of Dual Drug Nanomedicine For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Elham Hatami
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Resistance to conventional chemotherapy is a big challenge in the treatment of cancer including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A combination of natural chemo sensitizer agents with chemotherapy offers unique advantages over monotherapy alone. However, free unbound drugs, (in combination or as a single agent), lack tumor-targeted accumulation and therefore can be easily eliminated from the patient body. Moreover, some drugs are hydrophobic, and their organic solvents cause in vivo toxicity, thereby limiting their capability in clinical translation. Herein, dual loaded biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) using Gemcitabine (Gem)a pyrimidine nucleoside antimetabolite and Gambogic acid (GA) (a highly hydrophobic chemo …

Telemedicine And Malpractice: Creating Uniformity At The National Level, Tyler D. Wolf
Telemedicine And Malpractice: Creating Uniformity At The National Level, Tyler D. Wolf
William & Mary Law Review
Picture this: an elderly gentleman living alone, isolated in a rural, midwestern locale. One day, this elderly gentleman awakes to find a distinct rash forming on his chest. The nearest doctor capable of performing an examination is located over a hundred miles away, and this man has not driven more than ten miles in twenty years. Shambling into his living room, the elderly man logs onto his computer and begins typing. Within twenty minutes he is videoconferencing with a doctor who examines the rash remotely and makes a diagnosis.
Through advances in telemedicine, the scenario described above is becoming an …

Coping strategies are needed to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize stressful events. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing guidelines on coping of infertile couples' undergoing In Vitro Fertilization. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to achieve the aim of this study. This study conducted at the assisted reproductive technology …
Unraveling Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Development Of Unconventional T Cells, Daniel Eduardo Bastardo Blanco
Unraveling Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Development Of Unconventional T Cells, Daniel Eduardo Bastardo Blanco
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The thymus supports and guides the generation of a diverse repertoire of mature T cells from precursors derived from the bone marrow. In addition to conventional CD4 and CD8 T cells, innate-like T cells also develop in the thymus and share features of the adaptive and the innate immune system. These ‘unconventional’ T cells have emerging roles in tissue homeostasis and disease, but the molecular mechanisms underpinning their development remain elusive. In this study, we uncovered the roles of the molecules RAPTOR and PTEN in the thymic development of unconventional T cells. Capitalizing on genetic deletion of RAPTOR, we found …
Associations Between County-Level Socioeconomic Status And Opioid Overdose Rates In Northern New England, Samuel Godfrey
Associations Between County-Level Socioeconomic Status And Opioid Overdose Rates In Northern New England, Samuel Godfrey
Theses and Dissertations
Background – The opioid epidemic persists as a significant concern to public health as the proliferation of fentanyl presents additional risks for illicit opioid users. States such as Maine and New Hampshire experience far greater opioid overdose rates compared to the overall US opioid overdose rate. Many studies on the opioid epidemic use socioeconomic and macroeconomic factors individually but few use a composite index of multiple of these measures. Limited attention has been paid to the need for a composite index of socioeconomic status at the small area (county) level designed to quantify the impact of socioeconomic status on the …

Background and aims: Sulfur-metabolizing microbes, which convert dietary sources of sulfur into genotoxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S), have been associated with development of colorectal cancer (CRC). We identified a dietary pattern associated with sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in stool and then investigated its association with risk of incident CRC using data from a large prospective study of men.
Methods: We collected data from 51,529 men enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study since 1986 to determine the association between sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in stool and risk of CRC over 26 years of follow-up. First, in a subcohort of 307 healthy men, we …

Elucidating The Regulon Of A Fur-Like Protein In Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis (Map), Fernanda Miyagaki Shoyama, Taveesak Janetanakit, John P. Bannantine, Raul G. Barletta, Srinand Sreevatsan
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Intracellular iron concentration is tightly regulated to maintain cell viability. Iron plays important roles in electron transport, nucleic acid synthesis, and oxidative stress. A Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP)-specific genomic island carries a putative metal transport operon that includes MAP3773c, which encodes a Fur-like protein. Although well characterized as a global regulator of iron homeostasis in multiple bacteria, the function of Fur (ferric uptake regulator) in MAP is unknown as this organism also carries IdeR (iron dependent regulator), a native iron regulatory protein specific to mycobacteria. Computational analysis using PRODORIC identified 23 different pathways involved in respiration, metabolism, and virulence …
Collective Effect Of Landfills And Landscape Composition On Bird–Aircraft Collisions, Morgan Pfeiffer, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault
Collective Effect Of Landfills And Landscape Composition On Bird–Aircraft Collisions, Morgan Pfeiffer, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Ninety-three percent of all reported bird strikes occur below 1,067 m, which based on the typical approach and departure angles of aircraft is within 8–13 km of an airport. Concomitantly, the Federal Aviation Administration and the International Civil Aviation Organization recommend that any feature that would attract hazardous wildlife to the approach and departure airspace be restricted. Thus, preventing the establishment of wildlife attractants, such as municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLFs) within 8 km or 13 km extents (U.S. and international recommendations, respectively) of airports, has been recommended to mitigate the risk of bird–aircraft collisions (strikes). However, robust evidence linking …

Over-Medicalization And Criminalization Of Birth In The United States: Exploring The Outcomes, Meg Wallace 20
Honor Scholar Theses
This paper will examine the effects that over-medicalization and criminalization have had on the state of giving birth in the United States. It will attempt to offer insight on why the United States ranks near the bottom of countries that are considered “developed” in maternal mortality rates and infant mortality rates, despite spending the highest percentage of gross national product on health care. The paper will analyze: the history behind the medicalization of birth in the United States, different methods of over-medicalization, the impacts of unnecessary medical interventions, different incentives driving medicalization, the history of criminalization of pregnant women, the …
Exploring An Instrumented Balance Assessment In Athletes With Acute Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Compared To Healthy Athletes And Non-Athletes, Bryana Popa
University Honors Theses
Balance deficits are common following mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and can persist beyond the standard recovery period. Advances in wearable technologies, such as inertial measurement units (IMUs), have increased utilization of instrumented balance assessments. There are limited studies providing normative ranges for the Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS) to characterize abnormalities in people with mTBI. This thesis provides balance ranges for athletes with acute mTBI and normative control populations completing the mBESS. Testing occurred at the university athletic facility or the Balance Disorders Laboratory at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System …

Ethics In Perioperative Practice—Principles And Applications, Kathryn Schroeter
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Though often difficult, ethical decision making is necessary when caring for surgical patients. Perioperative nurses have to recognize ethical dilemmas and be prepared to take action based on the ethical code outlined in the American Nurses Association's (ANA's) Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. In this first of a nine‐part series that will help perioperative nurses relate the ANA code to their own area of practice, the author looks at the first statement, which emphasizes respect for people. Impact Of The Covid-19 Outbreak On Long-Term Care In The United States, Courtney H. Van Houtven, Nathan A. Boucher, Walter D. Dawson
Institute on Aging Publications
The United States (US) currently has the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 of any country. Yet, adequate testing for the virus remains a major issue. Approximately 51.6 million Americans are over the age of 65 and 56 percent of adults over 65 are living with two or more chronic conditions (23 percent have 3 or more). Given the higher risk of death and complications associated with advanced age and underlying health conditions, COVID-19 has had an immense impact upon LTC in the United States. Yet, the level and intensity of impact has been sporadic in application. This is due in …

A Survey Of Feature Extraction And Fusion Of Deep Learning For Detection Of Abnormalities In Video Endoscopy Of Gastrointestinal-Tract, Hussam Ali, Muhammad Sharif, Mussarat Yasmin, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Farhan Riaz
Publications
A standard screening procedure involves video endoscopy of the Gastrointestinal tract. It is a less invasive method which is practiced for early diagnosis of gastric diseases. Manual inspection of a large number of gastric frames is an exhaustive, time-consuming task, and requires expertise. Conversely, several computer-aided diagnosis systems have been proposed by researchers to cope with the dilemma of manual inspection of the massive volume of frames. This article gives an overview of different available alternatives for automated inspection, detection, and classification of various GI abnormalities. Also, this work elaborates techniques associated with content-based image retrieval and automated systems for …

Background
Breast cancer cases are on the rise in Ghana, with older adult women being more at risk of the disease. However, there is a paucity of current studies on factors that predict breast cancer screening among older adult women using nationally representative data. The present study, therefore, addressed this gap by estimating the prevalence of and identifying the factors that predict breast cancer screening among older adult women in Ghana.
Methods
We used the cross-sectional survey dataset of the 2014/2015 (wave II) Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE). A complex survey design methodology was employed to estimate …
