The Effect Of The Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model On Adult Depression In An Outpatient Setting, Genevieve E. Sweeney Apr 2020

The Effect Of The Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model On Adult Depression In An Outpatient Setting, Genevieve E. Sweeney

Doctoral Projects

Depression is one of the most common chronic conditions in the world. Despite this, depression continues to be under-screened, inaccurately assessed and diagnosed, and poorly treated in outpatient settings. Many providers solely rely on clinical judgement instead of a screening tool or evidence-based toolkit when a patient presents with depression symptoms, resulting in underdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Utilization of resources can help a provider appropriately screen, diagnose and treat an individual with depression. Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based model intended to improve these measures. Studies from the literature support the efficacy of the SBIRT model …

Improving Blood Pressure Control Among Patients Diagnosed With Hypertension In A Primary Care Setting, Eriko Apriliando

Doctoral Projects

Hypertension affects over 38% of adults or approximately 103 million Americans, costing around $131 billion annually in treatment and loss of productivity. It is also an independent risk factor for coronary events, heart failure, stroke, and end-stage renal disease contributing to 410,624 United States (U.S.) deaths in 2014. The American Heart Association (2016) has released the Measure Accurately, Act Rapidly, and Partner with Patient (MAP) protocol in order to address this issue. This project focused on implementing parts of the MAP protocol. The purpose was to improve blood pressure (BP) control of patients diagnosed with hypertension in a primary care …

What Smells? Developing In-Field Methods To Characterize The Chemical Composition Of Wild Mammalian Scent Cues, Cynthia Thompson, Kimberly N. Bottenberg, Andrew Lantz, Maria A.B. De Oliverira, Leonardo C.O. Melo, Christopher J. Vinyard

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Olfactory cues play an important role in mammalian biology, but have been challenging to assess in the field. Current methods pose problematic issues with sample storage and transportation, limiting our ability to connect chemical variation in scents with relevant ecological and behavioral contexts. Real-time, in-field analysis via portable gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has the potential to overcome these issues, but with trade-offs of reduced sensitivity and compound mass range. We field-tested the ability of portable GC-MS to support two representative applications of chemical ecology research with a wild arboreal primate, common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). We developed methods …

Implementation Of Early Mobility In The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Kelly Lubbers Apr 2020

Implementation Of Early Mobility In The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Kelly Lubbers

Doctoral Projects

Patients admitted to pediatric intensive care units and pediatric cardiac intensive care units often experience prolonged periods of immobility due to critical illnesses and surgical interventions. Many pediatric intensive care unit survivors develop physical and developmental disabilities that have long-lasting impacts into childhood and adulthood. Early mobility may be one aspect to mitigate the risks associated with pediatric intensive care unit admissions. Early mobility protocols have shown to be a safe and feasible intervention to encourage mobility in pediatric patients. This quality improvement project developed and implemented an infant holding tool to promote the mobilization of infant patients admitted to …

Developing A Sustainable Group Tobacco Control Program In A Community Mental Health Clinic, Jennifer Burns Apr 2020

Developing A Sustainable Group Tobacco Control Program In A Community Mental Health Clinic, Jennifer Burns

Doctoral Projects

While substantial practical, empirical, and theoretical contributions have been made toward the implementation of healthcare innovations, significantly less attention has been directed towards the sustainability of these interventions. For this reason, many healthcare innovations become unsustainable over time—yielding few long-term improvements, causing stakeholder disenchantment, and wasting valuable resources. The use of tobacco products is a leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States that is disproportionately prevalent among individuals with severe mental illness, making the development and sustainment of evidencebased tobacco control programs imperative to alleviating this public health burden. As a final project in Grand Valley’s …

Optimizing The Double-Row Construct: An Untied Medial Row Demonstrates Equivalent Mean Contact Pressures In A Rotator Cuff Model, Austin V. Stone, T. David Luo, Aman Sharma, Kerry A. Danelson, Michael De Gregorio, Michael T. Freehill

Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: The merits of a double-row rotator cuff repair (RCR) construct are well-established for restoration of the footprint and lateral-row security. The theoretical benefit of leaving the medial row untied is to prevent damage to the rotator cuff by tissue strangulation, and the benefit of suture tape is a more even distribution of force across the repair site. These benefits, to our knowledge, have not been evaluated in the laboratory.

Hypothesis: Leaving the medial row untied and using a suture bridge technique with suture tape will offer more even pressure distribution across the repair site without compromising total contact force. …

Perinatal Drug Abuse And Neonatal Drug Withdrawal, Samarth Shukla, Lisa B. Zirkin, Enrique Gomez Pomar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Drug abuse and addiction have significantly increased over the last few decades; specifically, opioid abuse and dependence have increased to epidemic proportions. This increased use of drugs includes women of childbearing age and those who are pregnant. Drug abuse during pregnancy is a serious health risk for both mother and newborn infant. Infants exposed to maternal drugs in fetal life develop signs of drug withdrawal during early neonatal life. This group of withdrawal signs is known as neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Although NAS is not a fatal condition, it results in significant illness and prolonged hospitalization.

Vaccine Confidence, Coverage, And Hesitancy Worldwide: A Literature Analysis Of Vaccine Hesitancy And Potential Causes Worldwide, Jordan Hammond Apr 2020

Vaccine Confidence, Coverage, And Hesitancy Worldwide: A Literature Analysis Of Vaccine Hesitancy And Potential Causes Worldwide, Jordan Hammond

Senior Theses

Vaccines are one of the world’s most impactful medical therapies. They are cost-effective, successfully proven, and one of the quickest treatment options available today (Clark et al., 2016). They save millions of lives every year and have eliminated certain diseases on a national and international level. However, millions of people worldwide still remain unvaccinated. In developed nations, mainly The United States (U.S.) and the European countries, many of the unvaccinated are a result of rising vaccine hesitancy of parents in conjunction with the anti-vaccination movement. Vaccine hesitancy is defined as “a delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability” …

Plk1 Pbd Selective Inhibition As A Potential Cancer Therapy, Lauren E. Wilder Apr 2020

Plk1 Pbd Selective Inhibition As A Potential Cancer Therapy, Lauren E. Wilder

Senior Theses

Polo-Like Kinase 1 (PLK1) is a protein that has been found to be overexpressed in a variety of cancers including prostate and colorectal cancers, and it is often an indicator of poor patient prognosis. It has functions in initiating, maintaining, and completing mitosis, so it has an important role in controlling the proliferation of cells. PLK1 contains a highly conserved catalytic kinase domain and a less-conserved Polo Box Domain (PBD). Inhibiting the phospho-ligand binding of the PBD is a potential cancer therapy because it would prevent the cell from properly completing the cell cycle, thus inducing apoptosis. In Dr. McInnes’ …

Use Of A Novel Whole-Body Imaging Approach To Predict Resting Metabolic Rates In Athletes, Nicole Vencil Apr 2020

Use Of A Novel Whole-Body Imaging Approach To Predict Resting Metabolic Rates In Athletes, Nicole Vencil

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Prediction of energy expenditure allows for calculation of appropriate energy requirements, which is especially important for athletes. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the greatest contributor to total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) and is typically measured via indirect calorimetry. Indirect calorimetry is not always available, which results in the need for predictive equations. Most predictive equations have been developed with participants resembling the general population and have not been found to be appropriate for athletes, as they may incorrectly predict RMR due to the unique differences of body composition between athletes and the general population. The purpose of the present study …

Comparisons Of Celiac Disease And Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, Victoria Thomas Apr 2020

Comparisons Of Celiac Disease And Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, Victoria Thomas

Senior Honors Theses

Celiac disease (CD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) are often confused or grouped together due to their commonalities. However, this is careless behavior because there are clinically significant differences between the two diseases. Similarities between them include varying degrees of damage or permeability in the lining of the small intestine, involvement of the innate immune system, alleviation of symptoms upon implementation of a gluten-free diet (GFD), and the possibility for complications if the pathology is not adequately treated. Despite these similarities, minor details such as the following make CD and NCGS worth differentiating: the question of gluten as the true …
