Economic Burden And Mental Health Of Primary Caregivers Of Perinatally Hiv Infected Adolescents From Kilifi, Kenya, Patrick V. Katana, Amina Abubakar, Moses K. Nyongesa, Derrick Ssewanyana, Paul Mwangi, Charles R. Newton, Julie Jemutai
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Background: Eighty per cent of perinatally HIV infected (PHI) adolescents live in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA), a setting also characterized by huge economic disparities. Caregiving is crucial to the management of chronic illness such as HIV/AIDS, but the economic costs and mental disorders borne by caregivers of PHI adolescents often go unnoticed. In this study, we evaluated economic costs, coping strategies and association between economic cost and mental health functioning of caregivers of perinatally HIV infected adolescents in Kilifi, Kenya.
Methods: We used a cost of illness descriptive analysis approach to determine the economic burden and Patient Health Questionnaire …

Background: The Millennium Developmental Goals ensured a significant reduction in childhood mortality. However, this reduction simultaneously raised concerns about the long-term outcomes of survivors of early childhood insults. This systematic review focuses on the long-term neurocognitive and mental health outcomes of neonatal insults (NNI) survivors who are six years or older.
Methods: Two independent reviewers conducted a comprehensive search for empirical literature by combining index and free terms from the inception of the databases until 10th October 2019. We also searched for additional relevant literature from grey literature and using reference tracking. Studies were included if they: were …
Stretching The Law: The Application Of Public Nuisance To The Opioid Epidemic, Lindsay Manning, Hannah L. Thompson
Stretching The Law: The Application Of Public Nuisance To The Opioid Epidemic, Lindsay Manning, Hannah L. Thompson
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
Opioid use in the United States increased five-fold in the last decade.
Every day ninety Americans die from drug abuse overdose. Is it
illegal opioid trafficking, or is it a problem within the medical profession?
Recent litigation strategies, like those used in the recent
landmark case of Oklahoma v. Johnson and Johnson, show that opioid
production and distribution are being linked to fueling the opioid
epidemic. Oklahoma is just one of the states that have concluded that
Johnson and Johnson, a large pharmaceutical company, is “overstating”
the efficiency of opioids and “understating” the harmful effects
of these drugs. Consequently, litigation …
Development And Diagnostic Application Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Swine Acute Diarrhea Syndrome Coronavirus (Sads-Cov), Molly Kroeger
Development And Diagnostic Application Of Monoclonal Antibodies Against Swine Acute Diarrhea Syndrome Coronavirus (Sads-Cov), Molly Kroeger
Schultz-Werth Award Papers
Swine Acute Diarrhea Syndrome Coronavirus (SADS-CoV) is a member of the Coronaviridae family. The virus is associated with severe small intestine inflammation and diarrhea in suckling piglets. In 2017, SADS-CoV was first detected and identified as the causative agent of a devasting swine disease outbreak in southern China. Routine monitoring and early detection of the source of infection is therefore integral to the prevention and control of a SADS-CoV outbreak in the United States. However, the United States does not currently have any diagnostic or surveillance tests to identify this emerging disease. To address these industry needs, we developed monoclonal …
Making Health Education Healthier: How Medical Schools Use Bias Training And Intersectional Theory To Reduce Implicit Bias, Madeleine N. Miller
Making Health Education Healthier: How Medical Schools Use Bias Training And Intersectional Theory To Reduce Implicit Bias, Madeleine N. Miller
Student Publications
Medical bias has been successfully characterized through two-way bias theory and the concept of the "normal body" and further divided into implicit and explicit bias. Yet, many individuals who go to the doctor are still given insufficient care because of their gender, race, class, sexuality, etc. Medical Education offers a unique opportunity for bias reduction both through formal and informal training. It is crucial that, as they are taught how to save a patient’s life, medical students are also taught to empathize with all patients and to give every patient, regardless of their gender, skin color, or class, the most …

Social Networks, The Local Food Environment, And Maternal Food Choice For Children Ages 1 To 5 Years Old In Rural Mexico, Ligia Ivette Reyes
Theses and Dissertations
Children’s nutrition is largely determined by the food choices their primary caregivers make. Food choice for children has important implications for nutrition, development, and the dietary habits and preferences that are formed during early life food exposure. Little is known about the food environments in which food choices are made and the role of social networks in maternal food choice during habit- and preference-forming years in contexts undergoing nutrition transitions and facing the double burden of malnutrition. The overall objective of this study was to gain an indepth understanding about how mothers, as primary caregivers, make food choices for their …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Program, Shantee Henry
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Sexual assault is a growing concern in the United States. Appropriate care of its survivors is essential to controlling the short and long-term effects of this trauma. A sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse that acquires additional training specializing in the comprehensive care of sexual assault survivors. Research indicates that there are not enough SANEs to provide coverage for the increasing number of sexual assaults, especially in rural areas. To increase the number of certified SANEs in rural areas, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. government provided funds through a grant that was …

Not A Magic Pill: An Educational Model On Antibiotic Prescribing, Christina Rose Leonard
Nursing Capstones
Background: Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing is common in outpatient settings across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found in studies that nearly 1 in 3 antibiotics prescribed at outpatient facilities is unnecessary. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics is accelerating the process of antibiotic resistance, as well as causing an increase in adverse events, including death. The literature indicates that knowledge plays a major factor in overprescribing, as well as provider attitude and patient expectations.
Objective: Present clinical practice guidelines to providers within a rural family practice clinic setting aimed at improving antibiotic prescribing. Gather information …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Caring for stroke patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and transient ischemic attack (TIA) at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) acute care hospitals is a very complex process that centers on accurate documentation. Inaccurate or missing documentation leads to patient safety issues, lower quality care, and inaccurate Veteran Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) classification for reimbursement. This pilot project’s 3 problems of interest include improving provider response to clinical queries about documentation, capturing national metrics collected by the VHA, and accurately representing veterans in VERA classification. Based on a review of the literature available on patient treatment file (PTF) accuracy and …

Health Care And Plains Native Americans: Striving Towards A Culturally Competent Medical School Curriculum, Benjamin M. Jacobs
Honors Thesis
My honors thesis will explore the curriculum at the USD Sanford School of Medicine (SSOM). I plan to examine the curriculum for cultural competence and diversity education, specifically on Native (American Indian/Alaskan Native) peoples. My primary goal is to increase the educational importance the Sanford School of Medicine places on the culture of all groups, especially, Native peoples. My topic is important because diversity and inclusion are essential parts to creating a unified team. Furthermore, this topic is especially relevant here in South Dakota due to the number of Native peoples in the state. South Dakota has the fourth highest …

Time For A Change? Brain Activity And Behavioral Performance Reveal Different Dynamics At Short, Intermediate, And Long Delay Intervals During A Delay Discounting Task, Conrad A. Mohr-Eymer
Honors Thesis
In our day to day lives, the ability to make goal-oriented decisions plays a crucial role in both our work and social lives. Therefore, researchers have examined how factors such as a varying reward or delay may affect decision making. One’s performance when making intertemporal choices, decisions made between a smaller and sooner (SS) reward and a larger and later (LL) reward, are often examined to study these factors. Although time and reward magnitude are important dimensions when individuals make decisions during delay discounting, little is known about the relationship between time perception, reward magnitude, and underlying neural mechanisms. To …

Clinical reports suggest that females diagnosed with substance use disorder experience enhanced relapse vulnerability compared with males, particularly during stress. We previously demonstrated that a stressor (footshock) can potentiate cocaine seeking in male rats via glucocorticoid-dependent cannabinoid type-1 receptor (CB1R)-mediated actions in the prelimbic prefrontal cortex (PrL-PFC). Here, we investigated the influence of biological sex on stress-potentiated cocaine seeking. Despite comparable self-administration and extinction, females displayed a lower threshold for cocaine-primed reinstatement than males. Unlike males, footshock, tested across a range of intensities, failed to potentiate cocaine-primed reinstatement in females. However, restraint potentiated reinstatement in both sexes. While sex differences …
Phonological Awareness In Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Children, Cindy Stetler
Phonological Awareness In Deaf/Hard Of Hearing Children, Cindy Stetler
Honors Projects
Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in America may learn American Sign Language (ASL) or English as their first language and may early-on or eventually be bilingual in ASL and English. In school, however, they will need to learn how to read English since ASL does not have a written system. An aspect of reading that can be particularly difficult for children who are DHH is phonological awareness (PA). Something that seems to be missing from the literature is looking at the relation between sign PA, spoken PA, and reading literacy in ASL and English. This will …

Lower Limb Force Asymmetries During Landing And Jumping Exercises, Simon Cone
Lower Limb Force Asymmetries During Landing And Jumping Exercises, Simon Cone
Masters Theses
Significant asymmetries can exist between the lower limbs’ force production during the take-off phase of bilateral jumping exercises. Some studies have indicated that similar asymmetries can exist during the landing phase as well. It has not been demonstrated if the magnitude and/or direction of this imbalance is alike during the landing (L) and take-off (TO) phase of a jumping exercises. The main purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the asymmetry that occurs during the L and TO phases. In order to quantify the degree and describe the direction (left. vs. right) of the …

A Survey Of Patients With Congenital Orthopedic Conditions In Malawi: Factors That Influence Late Presentation, Brianna Wallis
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Staff at CURE International, a non-profit organization that provides orthopedic care in Malawi, noticed a high prevalence of patients with congenital orthopedic conditions who are presenting late for treatment. Late presentation results in prolonged pain or discomfort for the patient and has the potential for increased cost to the institution, longer duration of treatment, and decreased quality of outcomes. To identify the factors that influenced presentation delays, we surveyed the caregivers of patients with congenital conditions that were seen in out-patient clinics, in-patient wards, and mobile clinics across the country. Sixty-two caregivers were surveyed; forty-two patients had a diagnosis of …

Primates On The Farm – Spatial Patterns Of Human–Wildlife Conflict In Forest-Agricultural Landscape Mosaic In Taita Hills, Kenya, Mika Siljander, Toini Kuronen, Tino Johansson, Martha Nzisa Munyao, Petri K.E. Pellikka
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Human–wildlife conflict (HWC) is a growing concern for local communities living in the vicinity of protected areas. These conflicts commonly take place as attack by wild animals and crop-raiding events, among other forms. We studied crop-raiding patterns by non-human primates in forest–agricultural landscape mosaic in the Taita Hills, southeast Kenya. The study applies both qualitative and quantitative methods. Semi-structured questionnaire was used in the primary data collection from the households, and statistical tests were performed. We used applied geospatial methods to reveal spatial patterns of crop-raiding by primates and preventive actions by farmers. The results indicate most of the farms …

Most women report fatigue in the weeks and months leading to a myocardial infarction (MI). However, fatigue is a complex phenomenon. Dimensions of this MI related fatigue, such as timing, distress, intensity, quality, patterns, and associated characteristics have not been established through focused study of this symptom. A lack of a holistic understanding of this symptom makes clinical decision making difficult, given that fatigue is a frequently reported symptom overall.
Avoiding Common Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients Via An Activity Program, Uchenna Egbosimba
Avoiding Common Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients Via An Activity Program, Uchenna Egbosimba
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Kidney transplant recipients have shown to have substantial post-transplant weight gain within their first year after transplantation (Henggeler, C. K., Plank, L. D., Ryan, K. J., Gilchrist, E. L., Casas, J. M., Lloyd, L. E., Collins, M. G., 2018). After the development of end stage renal disease, a reduction in physical activity can occur as well as postoperative recovery stress (van Adrichem et al., 2018). Evidence has shown that increasing physical activity post-transplantation has various beneficial effects on the metabolic profile, body composition, and quality of life of kidney transplant recipients (Chan et al., 2019). A home-based exercise walking program …
