Reducing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries Among Nursing Staff Within A Skilled Nursing Facility, Beth M. Brady
Reducing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries Among Nursing Staff Within A Skilled Nursing Facility, Beth M. Brady
MOT Student Capstones
Among health care workers, nurses have one of the highest rates of work-related musculoskeletal injuries (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2018). Studies have identified patient handling in the form of routine bedside care, lifting, repositioning, bedside procedures, and manual transfers to be high-risk tasks associated with this increased incidence (Facility Guidelines Institute, 2010). Evidence supports occupational therapy's role in promoting health through the implementation of programs that support safe engagement in work occupations including injury prevention, ergonomics, and work rehabilitation (Bade & Eckert, 2008). As the population of the U.S. healthcare workforce ages, occupational therapy's distinct role in helping health …
Brain Activation For Cochlear Implant Users: A Pilot Fnirs Study, Makayla Gill, Ceceli Bonitto, Bailey Heaton, Yingying Wang
Brain Activation For Cochlear Implant Users: A Pilot Fnirs Study, Makayla Gill, Ceceli Bonitto, Bailey Heaton, Yingying Wang
UCARE: Research Products
Cochlear implants (CIs) have become a widespread device for individuals with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) to regain hearing ability and improve quality of life. However, the brain needs to adapt to this bionic device and relearn the function of hearing, especially for speech sounds. Because the auditory inputs through a CI are not the same as those heard by individuals with typical hearing, aural rehabilitation takes time. The goal of this study is to examine neural bases of speech perception in adult CI users using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Two adults with bilateral SNHL and CI(s) were fitted with …

Laparoscopic Total Colectomy In An Eight-Year-Old With Familial Adenomatous Polyposis: A Case Report, Sarah Jeelani, Ayesha Saleem, Sohail Asghar Dogar, Amir Hafeez Shariff, Saqib Hamid Qazi
Section of Paediatric Surgery
Familial Adenomatous Polyposis accounts for20 years of age. Endoscopy is essential for the diagnosis with definitive treatment involving prophylactic total colectomy. With current surgical advances, this is routinely being performed with the aid of laparoscopy. Due to resource limitations and non-availability of the screening programs in the developing world, such cases remain under diagnosed. Genetic testing is necessary for prognostication of both the index case and their at-risk family members. Thus, we present a rare case of an eight-year-old female, with an early onset progression to colorectal cancer with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. We performed a prophylactic laparoscopic total procto-colectomy with …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
The recent emergence of Zika virus as an important human pathogen has raised questions about the durability and breadth of Zika virus immunity following natural infection in humans. While global epidemic patterns suggest that Zika infection elicits a protective immune response that is likely to offer long-term protection against repeat infection by other Zika viruses, only one study to date has formally examined the ability of human Zika immune sera to neutralize different Zika viruses. That study was limited because it evaluated human immune sera no more than 13 weeks after Zika virus infection and tested a relatively small number …
From Isolation To Communication: Connecting Adults Who Have Hearing Loss With Their Communication Partners, Stephen D. Roberts, Nancy A. Delich
From Isolation To Communication: Connecting Adults Who Have Hearing Loss With Their Communication Partners, Stephen D. Roberts, Nancy A. Delich
JADARA
As Baby Boomers enter the late adulthood stage of life, hearing loss continues to be one of the most prevalent, chronic, and isolating conditions facing older adults today. Research has focused on the negative consequences of hearing loss on the health and the person’s well-being, but it is equally important to recognize that hearing loss also leads to communication loss. The resulting social isolation and the collateral effects of hearing loss on the communication partner are the focus of this mixed-method study that explored the hearing loss-related quality of life for both parties. Five overarching themes emerged from the analysis, …
Prevalence Of Mental Health History Intake By Medical Trainees, Raymond H. Wen, Laura A. Weingartner, Emily J. Noonan
Prevalence Of Mental Health History Intake By Medical Trainees, Raymond H. Wen, Laura A. Weingartner, Emily J. Noonan
Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase
BACKGROUND:
In the US, 1 in 5 adults experiences a mental illness. Over 9.8 million adults and youths have serious suicidal thoughts, and LGBTQ+ communities experience an even greater burden of mental health disparities. Mental illness is often recognized late by providers, which prevents timely and effective treatment.
METHODS:
We estimated the frequency and response of healthcare trainees asking about mental health using video-recorded standardized patient interviews conducted by third-year medical students (M3s). Standardized patients are trained to give out specific health history information only when prompted by the student. Students had 30 minutes to complete new patient interviews in …

Rural-Urban Differences In Roles And Support For Community Health Workers In The Midwest, Kate E. Trout, Virginia Chaidez, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act supports the integration of community health workers (CHWs) into the health care workforce, but little is known about integration and current roles of CHWs among employers in community settings. This analysis of 97 employers described the roles of CHWs in Nebraska and found significant differences between CHWs practicing in rural and urban areas in organization types employing CHWs, funding sources, and minority populations served. The findings suggest that the utility of CHWs is widely recognized among employers, but deliberate support will be needed to better define the roles of CHWs to meet the …

Transformations: Presentation Slides
This study focused on the application of a unique technology designed originally to supply biofeedback to dancers, but in this case was used to assist a child learning to walk while battling the effects of Cerebral Palsy. The music shoes, called “Electroskip”, utilize a biofeedback system that generates different sounds/beats/songs when an individual is walking and placing pressure on their heel or toe. The study lasted six weeks with 2 sessions per week. While the Electroskip technology was worn for each session, it was only activated every other session. Data indicated that at the end of the study the child …

Is Vaping Related To Other Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents?, Alvina Emran
Is Vaping Related To Other Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents?, Alvina Emran
Senior Theses
Vaping (smoking a vaporized liquid with an active ingredient) has had an upward trend in high school populations (ages 13-18) within the last decade, mainly due to misinformation and targeting from companies that sell e-cigarettes (142, 7). The most common substances that are vaped in teens are nicotine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, the active ingredient in marijuana) (147). Nicotine and THC bind to NAchR and CB1 receptors that affect certain parts of the dopamine reward pathway, such as the prefrontal cortex, the ventral tegmental area, and the ventral striatum in the brain (44,106). Dysfunction within these pathways have been associated with …

Association Of Body Mass Index Genetic Risk Markers With Body Composition During Adolescence, Brice A. Smoker
Senior Theses
Background. Obesity affects nearly a fifth of all children in the United States and is a common risk factor for numerous chronic diseases. Many risk factors contribute to obesity, including race and genetics. Obesity is partially heritable, and many genetic loci have been identified as being associated with body mass index (BMI) in adults. Some of these loci have also been associated with childhood BMI, with effects strengthening with age. A previous genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with changes in BMI in children aged 1 – 17 years.
Purpose. The purpose of the current …
Relation Of Flt-1 And Endothelial Function In Women Soon After Delivery: Effect Of Physical Activity And Sedentary Behavior, Chloe W. Caudell
Relation Of Flt-1 And Endothelial Function In Women Soon After Delivery: Effect Of Physical Activity And Sedentary Behavior, Chloe W. Caudell
Senior Theses
Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) are believed to be caused by poor placental formation. APOs can be characterized by elevated levels of a circulating Fms-like tyrosine kinase biomarker called Flt-1, produced by the placenta when its blood vessels are shallow or inadequately formed. Flt-1 acts directly on the maternal endothelium to impair vascular function during pregnancy and contributes to maternal features of APOs. This study aimed to evaluate the relation of Flt-1 and endothelial function in women soon after delivery. This study also aimed to evaluate the relation of Flt-1 and physical activity and sedentary behavior in women during and soon …

The Relationship Between Social Functioning And Anxiety Symptoms In Preschoolers With Autism, Kaylee L. Cox
Senior Theses
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social functioning. Furthermore, children with ASD have been found to have high rates of comorbid anxiety. Understanding the relationship between ASD and comorbid anxiety is essential in raising awareness of anxiety symptomology in children with ASD in hopes of better informing treatment and support. The present study examines the relationship between social functioning and general anxiety in children with ASD compared to typically developing (TD) children. The first objective of this study was to examine group differences in social impairments and anxiety symptoms between children diagnosed with ASD and TD children. …
Differences In Food Spending On Groceries And Eating Out Between Two Dietary Groups: The New Soul Study, Carly Fassler
Differences In Food Spending On Groceries And Eating Out Between Two Dietary Groups: The New Soul Study, Carly Fassler
Senior Theses
Background: Heart disease is now the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are all risk factors for heart disease. Research has shown that increasing consumption of plant-based foods may be effective in reducing risk factors for chronic disease, especially heart disease. A plant-based diet consists of nutrient-dense plant foods and minimizes the consumption of processed animal products. High costs of eating a healthier diet are a commonly cited barrier that prevents individuals from making dietary changes that could potentially decrease their chronic disease risk.
Objective: To …
Startle Response In Women With The Fmr1 Premutation And Risk For Anxiety Disorders, Azalfa Lateef
Startle Response In Women With The Fmr1 Premutation And Risk For Anxiety Disorders, Azalfa Lateef
Senior Theses
Background: The FMR1 premutation, which occurs when there is an expansion of 55 -200 repeats of the CGG trinucleotide on the FMR1 gene, is associated with an increased risk for anxiety disorders. Indices of autonomic regulation may prove to be useful biomarkers for psychopathological risk, including stress and anxiety. In the general population, diminished habituation to a startle response is linked to a variety of psychological disorders, including anxiety, yet little is known about this relationship in those with the FMR1 premutation. Given the increased risk for anxiety in those with the FMR1 premutation, the present study aims to examine …

Follicular Sensitivity Index: A Tool To Predict Successful Conception After Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection, Rehana Rehman, Amara Zafar, Nida Zahid, Nuruddin Badruddin Mohammed
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Follicular sensitivity index (FSI) is used for estimation of follicular responsiveness to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) during intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). In a retrospective study, FSI of 1,385 females was calculated as [pre-ovulatory follicle count (PFC) × 100,000]/ [antral follicle count (AFC) × total received stimulation doses]. Females were then categorised into low, middle and high FSI groups according to FSI tertile values. FSI was 8.65 ±2.82 in non-pregnant as compared to 12.02 ±2.04 (p <0.01) in pregnant cohort. FSI turned out to be a strong predictor of successful conception on the receiver operating curve with cutoff value 10.36 at 76% specificity, sensitivity of 86% and area under the curve (AUC; 0.83). Calculation of FSI can thus predict the chances of successful conception in females with different causes of infertility.

Educational Session To Improve The Knowledge And Confidence Of State Agency Surveyors In Deficiency Citation Of Immediate Jeopardy Findings In Nursing Homes, Aileen Renolayan, Msn, Ma, Rn, Phn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: The oversight of nursing homes is a shared federal-state responsibility. Under the agreement with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS, 2018), state survey agencies assess nursing homes using standard surveys. Several studies indicate that the type of deficiencies issued to nursing facilities varies significantly by state, suggesting inconsistency in the survey process for issuing deficiencies. For example, variation in Immediate Jeopardy (IJ) citations among state agency surveyors has been the subject of reports from the Government Accountability Office (GAO, 2019) and the Office of the Inspector General (OIG, 2014).
