Effectiveness Of An Aquatic Exercise Program For Reducing Weight, Body Fat And Chronic Low Back And Joint Pain, Terilyn Darley

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity has risen at an alarming rate and has reached epidemic proportions throughout the world (WHO, 2017). In the U. S., approximately 93.3 million U.S. adults are obese with an overall prevalence of 39.8 %. Chronic pain is another public health issue in the U.S, affecting almost 100 million people and is associated with significant annual healthcare costs and lost productivity (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health [NCCIH], 2017). Exercise is considered one of the most effective prevention strategies for reducing obesity and has been documented to decrease chronic pain. The purpose …

A Comparison Of Power Variables For Two Loading Methods In Weighted Vertical Jumps 2020, Jonathan Tanguay

Master's Theses

Training exercises to develop muscular strength and power, such as the weighted jump squat, commonly utilize barbells and dumbbells to increase resistance. Strength coaches often measure improvements in peak force, peak power, and rate of force development to determine effectiveness of a training program. The purpose of this study was to determine if equipment selection (barbells vs. dumbbells) affects peak force, peak power, and/or rate of force development in weighted jump squats. Thirteen physically active, college-aged males (age: 21.6 ± 2.0 years, height: 182.8 ± 9.7 cm, body mass: 87.2 ± 9.0 kg, lean mass: 72.3 ± 8.1 kg) performed …

Genome-Wide Characterization Of Cytosine-Specific 5-Hydroxymethylation In Normal Breast Tissue., Owen M Wilkins, Kevin C Johnson, E Andres Houseman, Jessica E King, Carmen J Marsit, Brock C Christensen

Faculty Research 2020

Despite recent evidence that 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) possesses roles in gene regulation distinct from 5-methylcytosine (5mC), relatively little is known regarding the functions of 5hmC in mammalian tissues. To address this issue, we utilized an approach combining both paired bisulfite (BS) and oxidative bisulfite (oxBS) DNA treatment, to resolve genome-wide patterns of 5hmC and 5mC in normal breast tissue from disease-free women. Although less abundant than 5mC, 5hmC was differentially distributed, and consistently enriched among breast-specific enhancers and transcriptionally active chromatin. In contrast, regulatory regions associated with transcriptional inactivity, such as heterochromatin and repressed Polycomb regions, were relatively depleted of 5hmC. …

Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Welcoming home a new baby is a challenging and sometimes stressful situation for even the most seasoned of parents. There are several decisions parents must make about the care their new baby will receive. One of those choices is kangaroo care. Although this intervention may not always be performed due to immediate medical concerns, immediate bathing, hospital policies, and cultural norms, it has been proven to have several benefits. Kangaroo care is defined as skin to skin contact in which the baby is placed on a parent’s bare chest and is swaddled in warm blankets similar to how a mother …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Alexithymia is associated with difficulties in emotional self-regulation, and alexithymia is specifically associated with an absence of emotional experience and cognition of emotion. Past research has indicated a potential association between alexithymia and the CRHR1 gene . Situational factors may also impact the expression of the CRHR1 gene within an individual. Berenbaum (1996) found associations between PTSD/childhood trauma and alexithymia. This study examined these associations using the Online Alexithymia Questionnaire-G2 (OAQ-G2) as well as DNA samples gathered from 657 participants at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (72% women; 78.6% white; mean age= 20.34; standard deviation of 2.6). © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Strategies aiming to promote weight loss usually include anything that results in an increase in energy expenditure (exercise) or a decrease in energy intake (diet). However, the probability of losing weight is low and the probability of sustained weight loss is even lower. Herein, we bring some questions and suggestions about the topic, with a focus on exercise interventions. Based on the current evidence, we should look at how metabolism changes in response to interventions instead of counting calories, so we can choose more efficient models that can account for the …

Sensitivity Of Comorbidity Network Analysis., Jason Cory Brunson, Thomas P Agresta, Reinhard Laubenbacher Apr 2020

Sensitivity Of Comorbidity Network Analysis., Jason Cory Brunson, Thomas P Agresta, Reinhard Laubenbacher

Faculty Research 2020

Objectives: Comorbidity network analysis (CNA) is a graph-theoretic approach to systems medicine based on associations revealed from disease co-occurrence data. Researchers have used CNA to explore epidemiological patterns, differentiate populations, characterize disorders, and more; but these techniques have not been comprehensively evaluated. Our objectives were to assess the stability of common CNA techniques.

Materials and Methods: We obtained seven co-occurrence data sets, most from previous CNAs, coded using several ontologies. We constructed comorbidity networks under various modeling procedures and calculated summary statistics and centrality rankings. We used regression, ordination, and rank correlation to assess these properties' sensitivity to the source …

Breast Feeding Vs Bottle Feeding Effecting The Amount Of Hospitalizations In The First Year, Haley Maurer, Becca Young, Shelby Bohman Apr 2020

Breast Feeding Vs Bottle Feeding Effecting The Amount Of Hospitalizations In The First Year, Haley Maurer, Becca Young, Shelby Bohman

Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Breastfeeding and formula feeding are two ways to feed an infant after it is born. The importance of this is significant because of infections that children are suspectable to at such a young age. Children who breastfeed exclusively are shown to have lower infection/hospitalization rates than children who are formula-fed. Breastmilk has several qualities that help prevent infections in infants that formula does not. Formula is a good source of nutrients but it does not have the ability to stop infections from occurring. Infections can be very serious for infants especially if they are born preterm so having a way …

In Utero Drug Exposure Impact On Infant Health, Katie Edwards, Lisa M. Borges, Carlie J. Schoenherr Apr 2020

In Utero Drug Exposure Impact On Infant Health, Katie Edwards, Lisa M. Borges, Carlie J. Schoenherr

Lake Campus Research Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Drug use during pregnancy has many impacts on the baby’s and mother’s health. Prenatal drug use affects a child’s development during his or her life. When exposed to in utero drug use the baby tends to have a lower birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restrictions compared to a baby not exposed to drugs. The number of infants being born with withdrawal to drugs is increasing. This is an important problem because the number of fetuses exposed in utero to drugs is increasing. Research shows that exposure does pose a risk to the fetus and birth outcomes. Finding and …

Elucidation Of The Mechanisms By Which Anesthetics Induce Blood-Brain Barrier Breakdown And Delirium In The Elderly, George A. Godsey Ii

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Delirium is a highly prevalent neuropsychiatric or neurocognitive disorder that presents a major problem to modern healthcare. Patients suffering from delirium normally have a worse prognosis, prolonged hospital stay, increased hospital cost, long-term cognitive impairment, and higher mortality rates. Many factors can predispose one to develop delirium, which makes treating this disorder a daunting task. Unfortunately, delirium is the most common psychiatric syndrome found in the hospital setting. In fact, a form of delirium known as postoperative delirium (POD) is one of the most common postoperative complications faced by elderly patients undergoing surgery.

POD is a major problem in modern …
