BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is the most frequently observed autoimmune neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). While intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) is a well-established treatment for CIDP, its efficacy in diabetic patients remains uncertain due to their exclusion from prior randomized trials, largely because of concerns about confounding diabetic axonal neuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of IVIG therapy in CIDP patients with diabetes mellitus (CIDP-DM) compared to those without diabetes (CIDP).

Multiplex immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry (mIF/IHC) are increasingly employed antibody-based technologies that use tissue sparingly and facilitate the detection of co-localized or neighboring biomarkers. The beating of cilia on multi-ciliated cells (MCCs) is essential for normal development and homeostasis in animals. But while the structure and function of basal bodies and axonemes have received significant attention recently, the distal tips of MCC cilia remain relatively poorly defined. Here, we characterize the molecular organization of the distal tip of vertebrate MCC cilia, characterizing two distinct domains occupied by distinct protein constituents. Using frog, mouse, and human MCCs, we find that two largely uncharacterized proteins, Ccdc78 and Ccdc33, occupy a previously undefined region at the extreme distal tip, and these are required for the normal organization …

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality is a commonly reported reason for medical cannabis (MC) use, yet evidence regarding its long-term impact on sleep remains limited. This study evaluated changes in subjective sleep quality over a 12-month period among adults initiating MC treatment in Pennsylvania and explored whether preferred route of administration and referring condition were associated with observed changes.

Community health needs assessments (CHNAs) are vital tools for identifying population health priorities through monitoring chronic diseases and conditions; however, their effectiveness in preventing chronic diseases remains debated. This comparative study examines CHNAs from sixteen South Dakota hospitals across Avera, Sanford, Monument Health, and independent systems to evaluate their role in preventing chronic diseases. Analysis reveals significant challenges, including biased data sampling, limited community engagement, small survey samples, and inconsistent implementation strategies. Objective: A modeling and simulation tool, OpenSim, was used to determine the optimal relationship between actuator stiffness and actuation timing of a passive ankle exoskeleton for reducing metabolic costs during walking. We hypothesized that the absolute minimum in total metabolic cost would exist at an actuation timing of 15% of stance and at a spring stiffness of 7.5 kN/m. Infectious prions readily adhere to common surfaces, retain infectivity, and are highly resistant to conventional decontamination, posing significant biosafety challenges in the medical and research environments. Recent occupational exposures underscore the urgency of improving safety measures. Here, we describe an approach combining foam-swab surface sampling and protein misfolding cyclic amplification to enhance prion surveillance. Our results demonstrate the ability to detect prions most relevant to human health directly from contaminated surfaces, even at 100 million-fold dilutions of the brain. Sensory processing varies across individuals, with some traits-particularly sensory hypersensitivity to basic non-valenced stimuli-linked to emotional traits and psychiatric risk. Traditional accounts attribute this sensory-emotion linkage to limbic or prefrontal modulation, but empirical support is limited. Growing evidence suggests sensory cortex itself flexibly encodes value beyond labeled-line analysis. Across four high-density EEG experiments with multi-wave assessments, we identified reliable visual cortical hyperactivity in high trait anxiety. The effect emerged as early as 46 ms, localized to V1/V2, and was specific to the parvocellular pathway. It was reproducible across arousal states, stimulus valence, extended intervals, and paradigms, and evident for both …

This systematic review indicates that hydroxyurea may be a promising pharmacologic option for leukoreduction in paediatric critical pertussis. In reported cases, hydroxyurea was associated with leukocyte reduction and short-term survival. Its ability to potentially reduce the need for invasive leukoreductive procedures is especially relevant in resource-limited settings. While these observations are encouraging, the evidence base remains limited to a small number of uncontrolled case reports and case series, with inconsistent safety monitoring and no long-term follow-up. We hypothesize that children's protection from symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 may be due to more frequent respiratory viral infections, which prime their airway antiviral defenses.

Because diabetes mellitus (DM) poses harm to the reproductive systems of humans and mice on both the cellular and histological levels, we sought to understand the effects of streptozotocin-induced (STZ) diabetes mellitus on the spermatogenesis and Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) production of mice. The structural integrity of the testes is disrupted due to the high levels of oxidative stress caused by DM, which also hinders spermatogenesis.
