Aminoacyl-Trna Synthetases, Miguel Angel Rubio Gomez, Michael Ibba Apr 2020

Aminoacyl-Trna Synthetases, Miguel Angel Rubio Gomez, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are an essential and universally distributed family of enzymes that plays a critical role in protein synthesis, pairing tRNAs with their cognate amino acids for decoding mRNAs according to the genetic code. Synthetases help to ensure accurate translation of the genetic code by using both highly accurate cognate substrate recognition and stringent proofreading of noncognate products. While alterations in the quality control mechanisms of synthetases are generally detrimental to cellular viability, recent studies suggest that in some instances such changes facilitate adaption to stress conditions. Beyond their central role in translation, synthetases are also emerging as key …

Critical Care Ultrasonography And Its Application For Covid-19, Xi Liu, Md, Yang Hai, Md, Bin Ma, Md, Weelic Chong, Md, Ji-Bin Liu, Md Apr 2020

Critical Care Ultrasonography And Its Application For Covid-19, Xi Liu, Md, Yang Hai, Md, Bin Ma, Md, Weelic Chong, Md, Ji-Bin Liu, Md

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Ultrasound has developed as an invaluable tool in diagnosis and proper management in the intensive care unit (ICU). Application of critical care ultrasonography is quite distinct from the routine comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound exam, because the urgent setting mandates a goal-directed approach. Performing accurate and efficient critical care ultrasound requires ultrasound providers to first understand the pathophysiology of the disease and related imaging findings, and then follow the protocols to perform a focused ultrasound exam. In the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ultrasound plays an essential role in diagnosing and monitoring critically ill COVID-19 patients in the ICU. Our review …

Consistency Of The Determinants Of Early Initiation Of Breastfeeding In Ghana: Insights From Four Demographic And Health Survey Datasets, Precious Adade Duodu, Henry Ofori Duah, Veronica Millicent Dzomeku, Adwoa B. Boamah Mensah, Josephine Aboagye Mensah, Ernest Darkwah, Pascal Agbadi

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) is a key strategy in averting neonatal deaths. However, studies on the facilitators and risk factors for EIBF are rare in Ghana. We examined trends in EIBF and its major facilitators and risk factors in Ghana using data from Demographic and Health Surveys from 1998 to 2014.

Methods

We used complete weighted data of 3194, 3639, 2909 and 5695 pairs of mothers ages 15–49 y and their children ages 0–5 y in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2014 surveys, respectively. We accounted for the complex sampling used in the surveys for both descriptive statistics …

Predictors Of Barriers To Participation In Clinical Research In Adults Living In The Southeastern United States, Jennifer Scanlon Apr 2020

Predictors Of Barriers To Participation In Clinical Research In Adults Living In The Southeastern United States, Jennifer Scanlon

DNP Projects

Research is the necessary foundation for health care advancement and understanding. Significant challenges exist, however, with recruiting and engaging underrepresented populations in clinical research. The purpose of the scholarly project was to determine how stakeholder race, trust, and level of education influence participation barriers in clinical research. The project utilized secondary, cross sectional survey data that were collected between 2014 and 2016 through the former Mid-South Clinical Data Research Network (CDRN), currently known as the STAR-CRN. Descriptive statistics and spearman rank correlations were performed between level of education, level of trust, and each attitude statement for each racial category. A …

Public Stigma And Self-Stigma Of Depression In College Students, Peyton Lee Apr 2020

Public Stigma And Self-Stigma Of Depression In College Students, Peyton Lee

DNP Projects

A large body of literature portrays the long-term, increased presence of mental illness stigma in college students, a vulnerable population at high risk of victimization. However, literature lacks sufficient research differentiating between the separate forms of mental illness stigma as well as consistent research examining stigma specific to the mental illness of depression in college students. A cross-sectional, web-based survey design was utilized to collect quantitative data from 432 students at a private, four-year university in the southeastern United States. The primary investigator both described the presence of and relationship between levels of perceived public stigma, personal public stigma, and …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

The spread of new coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) follows a different pattern than previous respiratory viruses, posing a serious public health risk worldwide. World Health Organization (WHO) named the disease as COVID-19 and declared it a pandemic. COVID-19 is characterized by highly contagious nature, rapid transmission, swift clinical course, profound worldwide impact, and high mortality among critically ill patients. Chest X-ray, computerized tomography (CT), and ultrasound are commonly used imaging modalities. Among them, ultrasound, due to its portability and non-invasiveness, can be easily moved to the bedside for examination at any time. In addition, with use of 4G or 5G networks, remote …

What Constitutes Urgent Endoscopy? A Social Media Snapshot Of Gastroenterologists' Views During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Zachary L. Smith Apr 2020

What Constitutes Urgent Endoscopy? A Social Media Snapshot Of Gastroenterologists' Views During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Zachary L. Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Background and study aims: There is a consensus among gastroenterology organizations that elective endoscopic procedures should be deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the decision to perform urgent procedures and to defer entirely elective procedures is mostly evident, there is a wide "middle ground" of time-sensitive but not technically urgent or emergent endoscopic interventions. We aimed to survey gastroenterologists worldwide using Twitter to help elucidate these definitions using commonly encountered clinical scenarios during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A 16-question survey was designed by the authors to include common clinical scenarios that do not have clear guidelines regarding the timing or …

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (Ccd), Alzheimer’S Disease (Ad), And Β-Amyloid Accumulation: Using Ccd As A Reference For The Development Of Ad Treatments And Therapies, Isabel Gibbs Apr 2020

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (Ccd), Alzheimer’S Disease (Ad), And Β-Amyloid Accumulation: Using Ccd As A Reference For The Development Of Ad Treatments And Therapies, Isabel Gibbs

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

I researched the similarities and differences between Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD)—a disease with symptoms and progression pattern that parallels Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)—and AD. I studied how β-amyloid accumulates in various brain regions—such as the prefrontal, occipital, entorhinal and parietal cortices—in canines to determine how β-amyloid accumulation is associated with the development of behaviors signifying cognitive decline observed in CCD and AD—such as changes in the sleep-wake cycle, social interaction, housetraining, and general orientation—in order to understand how neuroscientists may be able to derive new understandings from a canine model with CCD, and apply them to humans with AD to develop …

Eye-Tracking Guilt Induction, Cassandra Ellison, Jordan Cooper, Wendy M. Rote, Max Owens Apr 2020

Eye-Tracking Guilt Induction, Cassandra Ellison, Jordan Cooper, Wendy M. Rote, Max Owens

USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium

Previous studies have shown a difference in perceptions of maternal guilt induction when there are variations in the situation of the event and the structure of the maternal guilt inducting statement (Rote, 2017). This research expands on this by examining whether differences in attention to specific words within guilt inductive statements may underly previously observed variations. Using eye-tracking methodology and hypothetical vignettes, this study examined which words college-aged students attended to most within maternal guilt inductive statements. Vignettes varied in the topic over which guilt was induced (e.g., moral transgression vs personal choice), the focus of the mother’s criticism (behavior …

Faculty Research 2020

Patients with locally advanced and metastatic urothelial carcinoma have a low survival rate (median 15.7 months, 13.1-17.8), with only a 23% response rate to monotherapy treatment with anti-PDL1 checkpoint immunotherapy. To identify new therapeutic targets, we profiled the immune regulatory signatures during murine cancer development using the BBN carcinogen and identified an increase in the expression of the T cell inhibitory protein B7-H4 (VTCN1, B7S1, B7X). B7-H4 expression temporally correlated with decreased lymphocyte infiltration. While the increase in B7-H4 expression within the bladder by CD11b
