Oh My Stomach: Constipation Management, Zoë Collette May 2020

Oh My Stomach: Constipation Management, Zoë Collette

Cohort VIII

Introduction: The purpose of this quality improvement project, as an adult gerontology/acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) working in a mental health hospital, was to provide the best intervention for those who are suffering from constipation. Previously, I was treating patients with Colace 100 mg Po BID, and now, various literature reviews proved that polyethylene glycol 3500 (PEG 3500) was a more effective treatment option. The goal of the PEG treatment was to help with the ease of a bowel movement within 24-48 hours. The project was conducted at Behavioral Hospital of Bellaire, a mental health hospital in Houston, Texas. A …

But I Have Pain Now, Stefanie Mcfelt-Williams May 2020

But I Have Pain Now, Stefanie Mcfelt-Williams

Cohort VIII

Pain is described as an unpleasant sensation that can be experienced differently by each individual. Pain can be acute, lasting less than 3 months, or chronic, lasting greater than 6 months. Opioids have traditionally been recommended as a routine method to treat pain. In the United States, we have an epidemic of opioid overuse and deaths. According to Lin et al. (2019), veterans are at a higher risk of opioid overdose than the general public. One alterative way to manage pain is battlefield acupuncture (BFA). The BFA protocol used in the Veterans Administration (VA) and the Department of Defense (DOD) …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Uti At Gateway Internal Medicine, Kathra Wickam

Cohort VIII

The project is a quality improvement (QI) initiative with a target population concentrated on adult women, between 18 and 99 years of age, presenting with symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI). The symptoms are often nonspecific, and dipstick urinalysis lacks adequate specificity; empiric treatment leads to substantial antibiotic exposure that ultimately proves unnecessary. The completion of this QI project came about after a ten-day reflective practice, during which I identified a UTI diagnosis and treatment problem in women at Gateway Internal Medicine in El Paso, Texas. The QI project is aimed at reducing inappropriate outpatient antibiotic use and UTI recurrence …

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring As A Guide To Disease Management, Monnie Adereti May 2020

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring As A Guide To Disease Management, Monnie Adereti

Cohort VIII

Background: Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is written as two numbers. The first (systolic) number represents the pressure in blood vessels when the heart contracts or beats. The second (diastolic) number represents the pressure in the vessels when the heart rests between beats. Hypertension is a medical condition that results from having blood pressure that is too high, and it is often referred to as a "silent killer." Most people with hypertension are unaware of the problem because it may have no warning signs or symptoms. When symptoms …

Deficiency Of Complement Component C1q Prevents Cerebrovascular Damage And White Matter Loss In A Mouse Model Of Chronic Obesity., Leah C Graham, Heidi E Kocalis, Ileana Soto Reyes, Gareth R Howell

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Age-related cognitive decline and many dementias involve complex interactions of both genetic and environmental risk factors. Recent evidence has demonstrated a strong association of obesity with the development of dementia. Furthermore, white matter damage is found in obese subjects and mouse models of obesity. Here, we found that components of the complement cascade, including complement component 1qa (C1QA) and C3 are increased in the brain of Western diet (WD)-fed obese mice, particularly in white matter regions. To functionally test the role of the complement cascade in obesity-induced brain pathology, female and male mice deficient in C1QA, an essential molecule in …

Faculty Research 2020

The human genome is extensively folded into 3-dimensional organization. However, the detailed 3D chromatin folding structures have not been fully visualized due to the lack of robust and ultra-resolution imaging capability. Here, we report the development of an electron microscopy method that combines serial block-face scanning electron microscopy with in situ hybridization (3D-EMISH) to visualize 3D chromatin folding at targeted genomic regions with ultra-resolution (5 × 5 × 30 nm in xyz dimensions) that is superior to the current super-resolution by fluorescence light microscopy. We apply 3D-EMISH to human lymphoblastoid cells at a 1.7 Mb segment of the genome and …

An Atypical Presentation Of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Rudy Forte, Shiwani Kamath, Debra Angelo, Johnathan Frunzi May 2020

An Atypical Presentation Of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Rudy Forte, Shiwani Kamath, Debra Angelo, Johnathan Frunzi

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a rare, but potentially life threatening condition associated with dopamine blockade, particularly first-generation antipsychotics. The complex pathophysiology of NMS remains somewhat unclear and debatable as the symptoms are not fully explained by dopamine blockade alone.1 D2 dopamine receptor antagonism remains responsible for most cases of NMS, however a few cases have been reported in which little to no D2 blockade activity was present.1

This poster is about an atypical presentation of NMS.
