Creative Work
The is a poem written in honor of the class of 2020. The coronavirus pandemic has robbed them of many fun activities in their final semester in college. The graduating seniors missed out on so many rites of passage such as march madness, commencement, award banquets, sports, labs, practice, face-to-face classes etc. for the last two months. Seniors are encouraged to have fortitude, practice patience, be grateful and show grit. The class of 2020 will conquer the world in due course. It is hoped that graduates will have imagination, will innovate and transform the world.

Swimming Pool Environment And Respiratory Health Issues Experienced By Masters Swimmers: Results From A Literature Review And Survey Of United States Masters Swimming Clubs, Jody C. Gan, Julia Snegg, William Harder
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
After three members of a Masters adult swim club died of lung cancer, both a literature review and survey were conducted with representatives from 746 United States Masters Swimming clubs to explore a possible relationship between swimming and cancers of the respiratory tract. Six other clubs reported known cancers of the respiratory tract among club members, but none of the other 740 clubs reported a similar cluster of lung cancer. More clubs reported cases of chronic respiratory infections and widespread complaints about air quality. While no studies exploring a relationship between swimming and lung cancer could be found in the …

Faculty Research 2020
Archetypal human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) are widely considered to be equivalent in developmental status to mouse epiblast stem cells, which correspond to pluripotent cells at a late post-implantation stage of embryogenesis. Heterogeneity within hPSC cultures complicates this interspecies comparison. Here we show that a subpopulation of archetypal hPSC enriched for high self-renewal capacity (ESR) has distinct properties relative to the bulk of the population, including a cell cycle with a very low G1 fraction and a metabolomic profile that reflects a combination of oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis. ESR cells are pluripotent and capable of differentiation into primordial germ cell-like …

Revision Of Introductory Chemistry Lab Curriculum To Incorporate Inquiry-Based Experiments To Enhance Student Learning, Christian Santos
Revision Of Introductory Chemistry Lab Curriculum To Incorporate Inquiry-Based Experiments To Enhance Student Learning, Christian Santos
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The Chemistry Department at BSU is restructuring its curriculum to integrate and scaffold research into the four-year curriculum as part of a CUR-NSF grant. The overall goal of this Honors Thesis was to contribute to the Introductory Chemistry laboratory (CHEM 141L) curriculum development by selecting experiments that move away from traditional “cookbook” laboratory experiments to inquiry-based labs to better engage students and maximize their learning. Three skills identified by chemistry faculty as essential for the restructured CHEM 141L are: preparation of solutions; use of standard curves in quantitative analysis; and graphical analysis of data using Excel. The specific goals of …
The Impact Of Genetic Counseling On Direct-To-Consumer And Patient-Initiated Testing, Jennifer Hull
The Impact Of Genetic Counseling On Direct-To-Consumer And Patient-Initiated Testing, Jennifer Hull
KGI Theses and Dissertations
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing provides consumers access to genetic testing without involvement or advice from a genetics specialist. While the expansion of DTC testing has increased consumer access to genetic interpretations, these reports can often provide a false sense of security and rarely cover enough genetic information to make significant interpretations about disease risk. Patient-initiated testing involves consumers seeking out and ordering more comprehensive genetic testing on a cash pay basis. A patient’s self-reported medical and family history is reviewed by a clinician before the test is ordered. These tests are often similar to clinically ordered genetic tests, including large panels …

Post-Infectious Sequela Of Sars-Cov-2 Infection In Adults And Children: An Overview Of Available Agents And Clinical Responsiveness, David S. Younger
Publications and Research
The SARS-CoV-2 2019 pandemic has created challenges to managing the post-infectious autoimmune consequences of a disease that leads to the high case fatality in adults and children. The spectrum of agents available to modulate and suppress the immune system in combination with other appropriate antiviral antibiotics and life support measures is reviewed. All of the agents envisioned to treat Covid-19 disorders, including a newly recognized pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome, impact post-infectious mechanisms in keeping with the multiplier effect of infection, immunity and inflammation known as I-Cubed (I3).

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Early pregnancy is a challenge for girls in Kenya that often has immediate effects on their educational opportunities, future implications for their social, health, and economic outcomes, and negative impacts on their children. For girls to achieve well-being in early and late adolescence, no single-sector intervention—whether education, health, wealth creation, or prevention of violence—will be adequate. The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya (AGI-K) delivered multisectoral interventions to over 6,000 girls aged 11–15 in two marginalized areas of Kenya: the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi and Wajir County in Northeastern Kenya. These interventions were carried out for two years (2015–17) and comprised a …
Preventing Childhood Obesity With Increased Education On Responsive Feeding Practices In Parents Of Newborns In A Community Health Center, Heather Burns
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
This project sought to increase healthcare providers’ responsive feeding education to parents of newborns at a community health center in Southeast Kansas. An educational offering was held for participating providers who provided health services throughout infancy. The offering reviewed the projects’ methodology, instruments, and intervention to increase responsive feeding education. Parents of newborns who met the inclusion criteria and who presented for an initial newborn visit with their healthcare provider were invited to participate. Parents completed surveys prior to receiving education at the initial appointment and the a follow-up survey at the infant’s two-month well child appointment to analyze parental …

Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra
Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This study examined birth outcomes among Deaf mothers who have given birth in a hospital setting versus a home setting. Deaf individuals are often marginalized in healthcare due to lack of accessibility, and therefore, the right to make their own informed decisions. This marginalization leads to inequality in health care, and oftentimes individuals within the Deaf community, with added intersectionalities, face even more discrimination. Deaf women face more health disparities in comparison to hearing women due to a variety of factors which include; lack of accessibility, medical professionals’ lack of cultural competency, and lack of inclusion in their healthcare decisions. …

Syndromic Surveillance System data is obtained from approximately 183 facilities participating in syndromic surveillance (132 Emergency Departments (ED), 51 Urgent Cares) across the State of Michigan. The reporting is based on individuals who present at EDs and may not be representative of the overall population.
