Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a description of a collaborative project based on the integration of technology development in the built environment for assisted living. The multidisciplinary collaboration is developed as a cooperative commitment to provide support for cross-border, collective projects. It was initiated as a project-based learning setting between undergraduate engineering students, and four years later the program shifted to include undergraduate architecture students and engineering master’s students. The learning experience opens the gate to a completely new collaborative setting, yet to be established, independent from its predecessor setting of project-based learning, focusing now towards an interdisciplinarity setting in cross-border collaboration. …

Efficacy Of Work-Related Training For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, E. Anderson, L. Hatton, K. Schlager, A. Shea, K. Watlington, M. Ferraro, M. C. Potvin

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Research suggests that traditional models of work-related training, in addition to a lack of on-the-job support, may exacerbate difficulties experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorder with obtaining and maintaining employment

The poor employment outcomes experienced by individuals with ASD are well-documented throughout literature and have resulted in the need to examine more effective ways of providing support and work-related interventions.

Although research has investigated the efficacy of work-related training on successful employment outcomes when used with individuals with ASD, a systematic review summarizing this evidence has yet to be published. Therefore, this review examines and interprets current research evidence …

E-Cigarette Or Vaping Product Use-Associated Lung Injury (Evali) Characterized By Pulmonary Ultrasound, Peter Sacci, Arthur Au

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Pulmonary ultrasound is a useful tool in the diagnosis and resuscitation of emergency department (ED) patients with dyspnea. We present the case of a patient who was diagnosed with E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) using pulmonary ultrasound. Many of these cases are diagnosed using x-ray, computerized tomography, or bronchoscopy and to our knowledge this is the first published case that demonstrates utility of ultrasound in diagnosing EVALI. While more investigation is needed on the use of this technique, the patient in this case was diagnosed with EVALI based on positive history, presence of normal cardiac function, non-cardiogenic …

Improving Central Venous Catheter Infection Rates Through The Use Of A Bundle: An Integrative Review, Janice Laverne Harris-Hall Jun 2020

Improving Central Venous Catheter Infection Rates Through The Use Of A Bundle: An Integrative Review, Janice Laverne Harris-Hall

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The role of Central Venous Catheters (CVC) is significant for the End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) population. The placement of the CVC for a HD (HD) patient is not only necessary, but life-sustaining. CVCs are usually placed for an emergent HD treatment, while awaiting a permanently placed arteriovenous fistula or graft (AVF/AVG), or when the permanent access becomes non-functioning. There are multiple risk factors related to having a CVC placed, the most predominant complication being catheter line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Studies have shown that implementing a CVC prevention bundle was associated with a significant reduction in the CLABSI rates within the …

Innovative Nanomaterial Approaches For Solar Energy Applications, James Walshe

Doctoral

The fundamental limitation of the conversion efficiency achievable with solar energy solutions (which includes photovoltaic and photothermal technology), requires the adaptation and integration of a series of innovative material strategies to continue the process of sustainably decarbonizing the global economy. Through the passive integration of additional nanoscale features which exploit and modify the solar spectrum through its interactions with luminescent molecules, metal nanoparticles, and/or thin-film optical coatings – the solar spectrum can be modulated and accordingly the collection efficiency of each respective technology enhanced. However, irrespective of the type of spectral conversion integrated into the technology (luminescent down-shifting, nanofluids, plasmonic …

Postnatal Loss Of The Insulin Receptor In Osteoprogenitor Cells Does Not Impart A Metabolic Phenotype, John L. Fowlkes, R. Clay Bunn, Evangelia Kalaitzoglou, Phil Ray, Iuliana Popescu, Kathryn M. Thrailkill

Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center Faculty Publications

The relationship between osteoblast-specific insulin signaling, osteocalcin activation and gluco-metabolic homeostasis has proven to be complex and potentially inconsistent across animal-model systems and in humans. Moreover, the impact of postnatally acquired, osteoblast-specific insulin deficiency on the pancreas-to-skeleton-to-pancreas circuit has not been studied. To explore this relationship, we created a model of postnatal elimination of insulin signaling in osteoprogenitors. Osteoprogenitor-selective ablation of the insulin receptor was induced after ~10 weeks of age in IRl°x/lox/Osx-Cre+/− genotypic male and female mice (designated postnatal-OIRKO). At ~21 weeks of age, mice were then phenotypically and metabolically characterized. Postnatal-OIRKO mice demonstrated …
