Increasing Knowledge Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Criteria And Introduction Of A Screening Tool To Improve Aaa Screening In A Family Practice Clinic: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Jennifer Elizabeth Rank
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are diagnosed most frequently in male patients of advanced age with a current or past smoking history. Screening for AAA by ultrasonography is effective at detecting clinically significant aneurysms and reduces AAA-associated and all-cause mortality at short-term and long-term follow-up. The criteria for screening include male gender, age 65 to 75, and a current or past smoking status. Additional criteria that may be considered include family history of AAA in a first-degree relative and/or a personal history of hypertension or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Based on review of the evidence, the project leader designed an evidence-based practice …

The purpose of this Evidence-Based Project is to determine the effectiveness of using “teach-back” method in giving education to patients receiving chemotherapy and how this method can increase patient satisfaction with understanding of medication action and side effects. Teach-back method is a way of checking patient’s understanding by asking them to state in their own words the information about their health. It is a way to confirm that the explanations given by their provider is understood. Teach-back method can improve patient’s understanding and adherence, decrease call backs and cancelled appointments. This project was developed to improve the organization’s patient satisfaction …
Implementation Of Post Forms Upon Hospice Admission: An Evidence-Based Practice Intervention To Reduce Hospice Revocations, Joanna Grace Asselin
Implementation Of Post Forms Upon Hospice Admission: An Evidence-Based Practice Intervention To Reduce Hospice Revocations, Joanna Grace Asselin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Background and Purpose: Reduction of live hospice discharges in the form of revocations is necessitated in order to maintain regulatory compliance and meet quality measures. Upon admission to hospice services, many have not considered personal desire regarding further intervention beyond Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) status. Evidence-based practice has revealed Physician Order for Scope of Treatment (POST) forms as effective in enhancing translation of patient desires related to care and interventions at end-of-life. The clinical question of this scholarly project asked if implementation of POST forms upon admission to hospice services would result in decreased revocations with related emergency department (ED) …

Cancer cells can develop a strong addiction to discrete molecular regulators, which control the aberrant gene expression programs that drive and maintain the cancer phenotype. Here, we report the identification of the RNA-binding protein HuR/ELAVL1 as a central oncogenic driver for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), which are highly aggressive sarcomas that originate from cells of the Schwann cell lineage. HuR was found to be highly elevated and bound to a multitude of cancer-associated transcripts in human MPNST samples. Accordingly, genetic and pharmacological inhibition of HuR had potent cytostatic and cytotoxic effects on tumor growth, and strongly suppressed metastatic …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020 The Authors The aim of this research was to investigate the use of shear wave elastography as a novel tool to quantify and visualize scar stiffness after a burn. Increased scar stiffness is indicative of pathologic scarring which is associated with persistent pain, chronic itch and restricted range of movement. Fifty-five participants with a total of 96 scars and 69 contralateral normal skin sites were evaluated. A unique protocol was developed to enable imaging of the raised and uneven burn scars. Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability was excellent (intra-class correlation coefficient > 0.97), and test–retest reliability was good (intra-class correlation …

Trees on farms have multiple roles in rural livelihoods, providing significant economic and ecological benefits. Trees on farms also constitute vital components in mixed crop-livestock-tree systems. In this paper, we analyze household tree planting and tenure security and explore the most important determinants that enhance the propensity to plant trees, using a cross-sectional household-level dataset from a sample of 200 households in the highlands of Tigrai, northern Ethiopia. Specifically, we employ a sample selection model that simultaneously takes into account the two decisions of tree growers (whether or not to plant tree and how many) to analyze the effect of …
Exploring The Impact Of Insecure Attachment Styles In Couple Adjustment Through The Lens Of Cluster B Pathology, Laura Bonnemort
Exploring The Impact Of Insecure Attachment Styles In Couple Adjustment Through The Lens Of Cluster B Pathology, Laura Bonnemort
Dissertations
The current body of research literature appears to lack adequate studies focused on individuals who possess an insecure attachment, potential cluster B personality pathology, and who are engaged in couple discord. The following clinical research project explored how insecure attachments impact the trajectory of both cluster B pathology and adult couples’ relationship discord. Studies reviewed included adults diagnosed with mood disorders, personality pathology, and those engaged in couples therapy due to dissatisfaction and discord. Developing an insecure attachment in childhood appears to place adults at risk for higher rates of personality pathology and risky romantic relationships fraught with discord. Evidence-based …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a causative agent for infectious mononucleosis (IM) that is associated with MS pathogenesis. However, the exact mechanism by which EBV, specifically in IM, increases the risk for MS remains unknown. EBV immortalizes primary B lymphocytes in vitro and causes excessive B lymphocyte proliferation in IM in vivo. In asymptomatic carriers, EBV-infected B lymphocytes still proliferate to certain degrees, the process of which is tightly controlled by the host immune systems. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mimics key features of MS in humans …
