Valsalva Maneuver To Decrease Pain Intensity During Arteriovenous Fistula Insertion In Hemodialysis Patients, Mahruri Saputra, Ikhsanuddin Ahmad Harahap, Sutomo Kasiman
Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia
AV fistula allows external vascular access for hemodialysis patients. Because hemodialysis patients experience puncture wounds and stabbing pain approximately 300 times a year, development of methods to decrease pain intensity are of great importance. Some techniques, such as the Valsalva maneuver, are known to reduce pain. This study aims to assess the effect of the Valsalva maneuver on decreasing the intensity of AV fistula pain in patients receiving hemodialysis. The quasi-experimental research of pre and post without control applying consecutive sampling to get as many as 63 respondents. Pain intensity was measured by using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). …

Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) remains the gold standard method for diagnosis of cardiac allograft rejection. Complications following EMB rarely occur, however, it can lead to coronary cameral fistulae (CCF). We describe the case of a 65-year-old patient admitted for lateral STEMI related to a fistula communicating the distal part of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) with the right ventricle after EMB biopsy, which was incompletely closed with a covered stent.

Selecting Appropriate Words For Naming The Rows And Columns Of Risk Assessment Matrices, Roger C. Jensen
Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene
The risk management systems used in occupational safety and health typically assess the risk of identified hazards using a tabular format commonly called a risk assessment matrix. Typically, columns are named with words indicating severity, and rows are named with words indicating likelihood or probability. Some risk assessment matrices use words reflecting the extent of exposure to a hazard. This project was undertaken with the aim of helping the designers of risk assessment matrices select appropriate names for the rows and columns. A survey of undergraduate students studying engineering or occupational safety and health obtained ratings of 16 English language …

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience
MicroRNA-124 (miR-124), a brain-enriched microRNA, is known to regulate microglial quiescence. Psychostimulants such as cocaine have been shown to activate microglia by downregulating miR-124, leading, in turn, to neuroinflammation. We thus rationalized that restoring the levels of miR-124 could function as a potential therapeutic approach for cocaine-mediated neuroinflammation. Delivering miRNA based drugs in the brain that are effective and less invasive, however, remains a major challenge in the field. Herein we engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) and loaded them with miR-124 for delivery in the brain. Approach involved co-transfection of mouse dendritic cells with Dicer siRNA and RVG-Lamp2b plasmid to deplete …

Defective rhythmic metabolism is associated with high-fat high-caloric diet (HFD) feeding, ageing and obesity; however, the neural basis underlying HFD effects on diurnal metabolism remains elusive. Here we show that deletion of BMAL1, a core clock gene, in paraventricular hypothalamic (PVH) neurons reduces diurnal rhythmicity in metabolism, causes obesity and diminishes PVH neuron activation in response to fast-refeeding. Animal models mimicking deficiency in PVH neuron responsiveness, achieved through clamping PVH neuron activity at high or low levels, both show obesity and reduced diurnal rhythmicity in metabolism. Interestingly, the PVH exhibits BMAL1-controlled rhythmic expression of GABA-A receptor γ2 subunit, and dampening …

COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a fast emerging disease with deadly consequences. The pulmonary system and lungs in particular are most prone to damage caused by the SARS-CoV-2 infection, which leaves a destructive footprint in the lung tissue, making it incapable of conducting its respiratory functions and resulting in severe acute respiratory disease and loss of life. There were no drug treatments or vaccines approved for SARS-CoV-2 at the onset of pandemic, necessitating an urgent need to develop effective therapeutics. To this end, the innate RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism can be employed to develop front line therapies against …
