Pediatric obesity remains a significant public health concern, particularly in rural areas where access to specialty care is limited. Primary care settings provide an important opportunity for early identification and intervention through family-based lifestyle modification. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary impact of implementing the 5-2-1-0 healthy habits framework, developed by researchers at Penn State, in a rural pediatric primary care clinic to promote improved lifestyle behaviors among children with elevated body mass index (BMI).

This capstone project evaluated the implementation of an occupational therapy-informed educational program for mothers, with children under the age of 18, who have experienced intimate partner violence at Genesis Women's Shelter & Support. The purpose of the project was to promote occupational engagement through education focused on stress management, sleep and rest, routines and habits, memory and attention, parenting and communication, and leisure participation. A needs assessment informed the development of a six-week bilingual intervention consisting of group and individual sessions. The project was completed at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, Texas, and involved adult patients with limb loss and rehabilitation healthcare professionals. A needs assessment was conducted using surveys, semi-structured interviews, and informal discussions to identify educational gaps and resource needs. Neurodegenerative disorders (NDD), including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, significantly impact motor function, cognition, self-esteem, and occupational engagement. Although creative arts interventions have demonstrated psychosocial benefits, there is limited research examining visual arts as an occupational therapy-led modality addressing both motor and nonmotor symptoms through meaningful occupation (Gros et al., 2024; Li et al., 2024; Chancellor et al., 2014).

This capstone project aimed to advocate for more inclusive and accessible playgrounds for children of all abilities in underserved communities in South Dallas. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) Model, the project evaluated playground accessibility and identified environmental barriers that limit participation for children with disabilities. Methods included a community needs assessment, playground observations using a standardized accessibility assessment tool, surveys, and stakeholder collaboration. Participants included community members, caregivers, organizational stakeholders, and children who utilize local playgrounds. Background: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly known as concussion, presents with complex physical, cognitive, visual, vestibular, and emotional symptoms that can significantly affect an individual's ability to participate in meaningful daily occupations. Firefighting involves long shifts, unpredictable schedules, sleep disruption, and repeated exposure to occupational stressors that may affect not only firefighters but also their families. This doctoral capstone examined how the occupational demands of firefighting influence family roles, routines, habits, participation, and overall well-being. A convergent mixed-methods study included active or retired firefighters (n = 18) and adult firefighter family members (n = 10), with three participants also completing optional semi-structured interviews. Quantitative survey data were analyzed descriptively, while interview transcripts and open-ended responses were analyzed thematically using the Model of Human Occupation as a guiding framework. Effective communication during nursing handoffs is essential for safe, patient-centered care, as breakdowns in communication are a leading cause of adverse patient outcomes. At a large academic level I trauma center, inconsistent nursing handoff practices were identified across progressive care units following the COVID-19 pandemic. This variability contributed to incomplete transfer of patient information and was associated with increased patient safety incidents, including delayed wound care, central line dressing lapses, and medication errors involving high-alert therapies. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major cause of kidney disease globally and it is a major cause of mortalities associated with diabetes. Background: The implications of intraoperative shunting during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) have been studied often with variable recommendations. While some surgeons favor routine shunting to minimize cerebral hypoperfusion, others reserve shunting based on intraoperative monitoring or high-risk clinical features. Predictors of shunt need not remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with overall shunt use and unplanned shunting in patients undergoing CEA.

Mitochondria remain at the core of cell metabolism, whereas the nucleus integrates cellular and environmental signals to activate genes. However, the mechanisms that directly link cellular metabolism to gene regulation are not well understood. Here we show, a metabolic pathway in the nucleus controls acetylation of histones by nuclear localization of mitochondrial enzymes aconitase (ACO2) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH2). Metabolic tracing studies show that IDH2 and ACO2 catalyze reductive carboxylation of α-ketoglutarate to rapidly synthesize citrate to increase nuclear acetyl-CoA pool. Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is rare, autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in CYP27A1, which encodes sterile 27 hydroxylase, a key enzyme in bile acid biosynthesis. Enzyme deficiency results in reduced cholic and chenodeoxycholic acid synthesis with accumulation of cholestanol, bile acid intermediates, and bile alcohols, producing a progressive multisystem disorder characterized by chronic diarrhea, juvenile-onset cataracts, tendons xanthomas, and neurological dysfunction. Although CTX typically begins in childhood, diagnosis is frequently delayed until adulthood, limiting the benefit of effective disease modifying therapy with chenodeoxycholic acid. More than 770 genetic skeletal disorders have been described, most with disease-causing variants reported in 1 of over 550 different genes. The ClinGen Skeletal Disorders Gene Curation Expert Panel was established to determine the strength of the evidence that supports specific gene-disease relationships (GDRs). Such information can assist clinical testing laboratories in choosing genes that should be included on diagnostic panels. Nine genes accounting for the most frequently encountered skeletal dysplasias (COL1A1, COL1A2, COL2A1, FGFR3, SLC26A2, TRPV4, COMP, ALPL, and SOX9) associated in the medical literature with 26 different skeletal disorders were reviewed using a semi-quantitative scoring framework.
