Unlocking The Potential Of Sub-Saharan Africa In Globalized Cancer Clinical Trials: A Perspective From The 2024 Aortic-Asco Stakeholder Meeting, Abiola Ibraheem, Adedayo Joseph, Miriam Mutebi, Mansoor Saleh, Sitna Mwanzi, Olusegun Alatise

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains significantly underrepresented in global cancer clinical trials, despite having the largest population of individuals of African descent, an essential demographic for ensuring diversity in clinical research. This study, developed from the 2024 African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC)-ASCO stakeholder meeting, addresses the critical need to involve SSA in cancer trials to improve global trial diversity and patient outcomes. Although globalization of trials has shifted research sites to regions like Eastern Europe and Asia, < 1% occur in Africa. This report highlights emerging solutions such as regional alliances, decentralized trial models, capacity-building initiatives, and public-private partnerships. The role of AORTIC and its Clinical Trial Special Interest Group in advancing training, infrastructure development, and international collaboration is discussed, with notable clinical trial networks, such as HypoAfrica, ARETTA, African Research Group for Oncology, and regional consortia, illustrating growing momentum and capability. This study advocates for a coordinated strategy to integrate SSA into global trials, ensuring more inclusive, effective, and equitable cancer treatment outcomes.

Purpose The PREgnancy Care Integrating Translational Science, Everywhere (PRECISE)-DYAD Study is a prospective observational cohort designed to investigate health outcomes among mother-child pairs (dyads) over the first 3 years of life in two contexts from sub-Saharan Africa. The primary objective of the study was to explore the effects of selected placenta-related complications, such as pregnancy hypertension, fetal growth restriction and preterm birth, on (1) Child health and development, and (2) Women’s health and well-being, including outcomes after stillbirth.

Respiratory impairment is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality after spinal cord injury (SCI), highlighting the need for interventions that improve breathing function. In people with SCI, acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits respiratory motor plasticity and improves inspiratory function. BACKGROUND: This population-based study aimed to quantify fracture risk after androgen receptor pathway inhibitors in advanced prostate cancer patients by preexisting health conditions.

METHODS: Patients were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare files who received abiraterone acetate with prednisone or enzalutamide between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2020. The management of locally-advanced, resectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is undergoing a major shift driven by the integration of neoadjuvant immunotherapy (nIO). Problem: Falls with injury rates had increased for over two years at the project hospital until nurse leaders implemented a new fall-prevention intervention. Patient falls are the most common preventable adverse event in acute care hospitals, with approximately 700,000 to 1 million occurring annually in the United States. Before implementing the Fall Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety (TIPS) toolkit, the hospital’s program lacked an evidence-based approach and a fall communication board to alert staff, patients, and families about the individual fall risk status, leaving a significant gap in patient-centered care.

Problem: The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists identify immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact as a standard of care that improves neonatal stability, breastfeeding outcomes, and maternal satisfaction. Despite these recommendations, timely initiation following cesarean birth remains inconsistent. At the project site, skin-to-skin initiation averaged 72 minutes after birth, exceeding the 10-minute benchmark, and exclusive breastfeeding rates were below the national standard of 70%. Contributing barriers included workflow variability, unclear role expectations, and inconsistent communication.

This project provided an open-access online program for caregivers of children with hearing loss to facilitate social engagement. Qualitative methods were used to conduct a needs assessment and identify areas of concern, barriers, and limited resources that affect participation in social activities. Based on the needs assessment, a 6-module website was created and published. Occupational therapy-based evidence, research, interventions, and best practices were compiled and adapted to target identified areas. Participants reported overall favorable feedback, stating an increase in knowledge, confidence, and participation.

Using dual ICD-10-CM codes for exposure/withdrawal (P04.49 or P96.1, respectively) may be more sensitive for identifying Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) than P96.1 alone. There are currently no studies that report on national prevalence using this dual code approach.

Charcot-Marie Tooth (CMT) disease is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous inherited peripheral neuropathy for which there is no treatment. CMT patients often present with weakness, fatigue, and muscle atrophy in the distal limbs. Improving function at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) may improve function in some CMT patients. Using mouse models, we investigated eight CMT subtypes for NMJ phenotypes by morphology and functional deficits assessed by electromyography (EMG). We did not find NMJ abnormalities in mice with mutations in Gjb1Y/Δ2 (CMT1X), or Yars1E196K/E196K (diCMTC). We aimed to map core datasets, additional variables, and research activities of these registries.

This study evaluates Working Out Loud (WOL) Resilience, a program designed to enhance resilience through peer-to-peer learning, targeting social isolation and self-determination. The WOL Resilience pilot program, delivered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach facilitators, included 29 participants and 5 facilitators over 8 weeks. Participants engaged in weekly sessions focusing on 8 resilience attributes. Evaluation included baseline, midpoint, and post surveys; facilitator feedback forms; and interviews. Results showed improvements in resilience attributes from baseline to post-program and indicated high program acceptability and positive behavioral changes.
