"How shall we prune" is a question probably more frequently asked than any other in the whole range of horticulture. To answer it brings forth a second question, viz., "Why do we prune?" Pruning is a means to an end. So then to prune intelligently and therefore successfully, there should be in the mind of the operator some definite purpose. Too often pruning is simply a cutting of the tree without any idea as to the final purpose such cutting is to serve. Such pruning invariably does harm instead of good, and has ruined countless trees. Black, with deep black pubescence, except that on anterior half of mesothorax, which is grayish, tipped with black, and on abdominal segments 3-6, which is pure white; clypeus arched, weakly and very sparsely punctured; labrum basally with two widely separated tubercles; joint r of flagellum equal to 2 and 3 together; wings deeply infuscated, iridescent; basal joint of hind tarsi not pointed at apex; pubescence of legs black. Length 21-22 mm.

About the middle of August when the flowers are at their best in our mountain canyon (Beulah, New Mexico), and the wild bees and butterflies have a daily surfeit of nectar, this clever little carpenter goes to work to make a storehouse and to provide for the young of the next generation. Many bees and wasps make their nests by cutting out; burrows in trees and bushes, but few work as quickly and skillfully as Clisodon terminalis.
