Degradation of organic semiconductors in the presence of oxygen is one of the bottlenecks preventing their wide-spread use in optoelectronic devices. The first step towards such degradation in functionalized pentacene (Pn) derivatives is formation of endoperoxide (EPO), which can either revert back to the parent molecule or proceed to molecule decomposition. We present the study of reversibility of EPO formation through probing the photophysical properties of functionalized fluorinated pentacene (Pn-R-F8) derivatives. Experiments are done in solutions and in films both at the single molecule level and in the bulk. In solutions, degradation of optical absorption and its partial recovery after …

Advanced Energy Storage Technologies And Their Applications (Aesa2017), Rui Xiong, Hailong Li, Xuan Joe Zhou
Electrical & Computer Engineering Publications
The depletion of fossil fuels, the increase of energy demands, and the concerns over climate change are the major driving forces for the development of renewable energy, such as solar, wind and wave energy. However, the intermittency of renewable energy has hindered its large-scale deployment, which, therefore, has necessitated the development of advanced energy storage technologies. The use of large-scale energy storage can effectively improve the efficiency of energy resource utilization, and increase the adoption of variable renewable resources, the energy access, and the end-use sector electrification (e.g., electrification of transport sector).

Effect Of Anthropometric Variability On Middle-Market Aircraft Seating, Tara C. Sriram
Effect Of Anthropometric Variability On Middle-Market Aircraft Seating, Tara C. Sriram
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
A middle-of-market aircraft, or MoMA, is defined as an aircraft capable of flying 180-250 passengers without refueling for 2,300-5,800 miles(~2,000-5,000 nautical miles). As the name suggests, middle-of-market aircraft are positioned in between the market segments served by narrow body (single-aisle) and wide body (twin-aisle) aircraft. This paper presents the findings of a study on the effect of anthropomorphic variability on economy class seating on middle-market aircraft currently in service. The study found that among 130 middle-market LOPAs, the mean seat pitch was greater for US airlines than for Asian airlines. Furthermore, the sampled Asian airlines had a higher preference …

Low Reynolds Number Numerical Simulation Of The Aerodynamic Coefficients Of A 3d Wing, Khurshid Malik, Waqar Asrar, Erwin Sulaeman
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
A low Reynolds number, three-dimensional CFD analysis is carried out for a finite flat plate wing using the commercial CFD code STAR CCM+. The six-aerodynamic force and moment components CL, CD, CM, CN, Cl, CY and their derivatives are computed at a Reynolds numbers of 3x105 by varying the pitch, roll and yaw angles about the quarter chord point. The computed results have been validated with experimental aerodynamic balance data when possible. The results indicate that roll and yaw angle affect the aerodynamic coefficients of the flat plate …
The Role Of Mentoring In The Careers Of Female Airline Transport Pilots, Paul E. Cline
The Role Of Mentoring In The Careers Of Female Airline Transport Pilots, Paul E. Cline
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Women have been a part of aviation since its inception, yet they have been traditionally underrepresented in the ranks of commercial pilots. This study explored what role mentoring played in the lives and careers of female Airline Transport Pilots (ATP).
It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference in self-reported perceptions of success between female ATP who had been mentored and those who had not. Of the female ATP who had been mentored, those who reported an informal mentoring relationship rated their relationship higher than those who reported a formal mentoring relationship when it came to career oriented …
Walking (And Cycling) To Well-Being: Modal And Other Determinants Of Subjective Well-Being During The Commute, Patrick A. Singleton
Walking (And Cycling) To Well-Being: Modal And Other Determinants Of Subjective Well-Being During The Commute, Patrick A. Singleton
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Although transportation’s impacts on physical health are relatively well-established, the relationship between transportation and subjective well-being (SWB) has been the subject of recent focus. Policymakers attempt to improve the health and well-being of populations through interventions to improve transportation experiences and promote sustainable transport modes, while researchers studying these connections seek valid and reliable measures of SWB in the travel domain. Studies consistently find travel by walking and bicycling to be rated more positively than automobile travel, yet many use single measures of travel SWB, obscuring nuanced variations between modes.
Using the results of a Portland, Oregon, survey of nearly …

Choosing Stem College Majors: Exploring The Role Of Pre-College Engineering Courses, L. Allen Phelps, Eric M. Camburn, Sookweon Min
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Despite the recent policy proclamations urging state and local educators to implement integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curricula, relatively little is known about the role and impact of pre-college engineering courses within these initiatives. When combined with appropriate mathematics and science courses, high school engineering and engineering technology (E&ET) courses may have the potential to provide students with pre-college learning experiences that encourage them to pursue STEM college majors. Our central research question was: What is the nature and extent of any relationship between high school E&ET course completion and subsequent selection of a STEM major in a …

Electron Effective Mass In In0.33ga0.67n Determined By Mid- Infrared Optical Hall Effect, Nerijus Armakavicius, Vallery Stanishev, Sean Knight, Mathias Schubert, Vanya Darakchieva
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Mid-infrared optical Hall effect measurements are used to determine the free charge carrier parameters of an unintentionally doped wurtzite-structure c-plane oriented In0.33Ga0.67N epitaxial layer. Room temperature electron effective mass parameters of m_ ¼ ð0:20560:013Þm0 andm_k ¼ ð0:20460:016Þm0 for polarization perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively, were determined. The free electron concentration was obtained as (1.760.2)_1019 cm-3. Within our uncertainty limits, we detect no anisotropy for the electron effective mass parameter and we estimate the upper limit of the possible effective mass anisotropy as 7%. We discuss the influence of conduction band nonparabolicity on …

A Robust Statistical Estimation (Rose) Algorithm Jointly Recovers The 3d Location And Intensity Of Single Molecules Accurately And Precisely, Hesam Mazidi, Arye Nehorai, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
In single-molecule (SM) super-resolution microscopy, the complexity of a biological structure, high molecular density, and a low signal-to-background ratio (SBR) may lead to imaging artifacts without a robust localization algorithm. Moreover, engineered point spread functions (PSFs) for 3D imaging pose difficulties due to their intricate features. We develop a Robust Statistical Estimation algorithm, called RoSE, that enables joint estimation of the 3D location and photon counts of SMs accurately and precisely using various PSFs under conditions of high molecular density and low SBR.

Distributions Of Pore Sizes And Atomic Densities In Binary Glasses Revealed By Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Maxim A. Makeev
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
We report on the results of a molecular dynamics simulation study of porous glassy media, formed in the process of isochoric rapid quenching from a high-temperature liquid state. The transition to a porous solid occurs due to the concurrent processes of phase separation and material solidification. The study is focused on topographies of the model porous structures and their dependence on temperature and average density. To quantify the pore-size distributions, we put forth a scaling relation that provides a satisfactory data collapse in systems with high porosity. We also find that the local density of the solid domains in the …

Measuring 3d Molecular Orientation And Rotational Mobility Using A Tri-Spot Point Spread Function, Oumeng Zhang, Tianben Ding, Jin Lu, Hesam Mazidi, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
We present a method to measure the molecular orientation and rotational mobility of single-molecule emitters by designing and implementing a Tri-spot point spread function. It can measure all degrees of freedom related to molecular orientation and rotational mobility. Its design is optimized by maximizing the theoretical limit of its measurement precision. We evaluate the precision and accuracy of the Tri-spot PSF by measuring the orientation and effective rotational mobility of single fluorescent molecules embedded in a polymer matrix.

A computer program tailored for EMP damage analysis of solid-state circuitry has been developed by modifying the existing TRAC network analysis program. Modification of the TRAC diode and transistor models to include breakdown parameters and the addition of a semiconductor device parameter library have greatly simplified the analyst's task. An added feature is a subroutine that automatically calculates the amplitude and duration of transient power dissipated in electronic circuit components.

Novel Algorithms For Ultra Scale Electromagnetic Problems In The Supercomputing Era, Brian Mackie-Mason
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The need for increasing fidelity and accuracy in mission-critical electromagnetic applications have pushed the problem sizes toward extreme computational scales. Therefore, there is a large premium placed on the investigation of parallel and scalable integral equation simulators, a particularly useful class of computational electromagnetics, to meet this demand. This dissertation will focus on three interrelated areas: i) quasi-optimal, well-conditioned integral equation based domain decomposition methods, ii) geometry-adaptive, multi-scale discontinuous Galerkin boundary element methods, and iii) high-performance and scalable algorithms to reduce the computational complexity of extreme-scale simulations with the aid of parallel computing architectures. This dissertation will first develop the …

This study examines the inventory policy for the emerging dual-channel warehouse, which has a unique structure where the warehouse is divided into two areas: one for fulfilling online orders and the other for storing products and fulfilling offline orders. A multi-item inventory model was developed considering the warehouse capacity constraint, demand, and lead time uncertainty. Solution methods are provided for both uniform and normal distributions. Adopting the proposed inventory policy for a dual warehouse is cost effective and adds flexibility to the warehouse and supply chain. The study also offers managerial insights on some critical issues faced by companies operating …

Hazards And Mitigation Measures In Aerospace Non-Destructive Testing, Khay-Wai Leong, Patti J. Clark
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
As an aircraft component is subjected to tensile/torsional/bending forces and heat cycles during operation, non-destructive inspection programs have been mandated by aviation regulatory authorities and component manufacturers to ensure that cracks and flaws in the aircraft structure, engine and components are detected before reaching catastrophic failure modes. In aerospace settings, eddy current, magnetic particle, dye penetrant and radiography inspection methods are known to affect worker health. Two recent studies have linked dye chemicals to bladder cancer, excessive electromagnetic field exposure has been linked to undue stress on the human body, and excessive exposure to ionizing radiation has been linked to …

Wetting Properties Of Structured Interfaces Composed Of Surface-Attached Spherical Nanoparticles, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Bishal Bhattarai
Wetting Properties Of Structured Interfaces Composed Of Surface-Attached Spherical Nanoparticles, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Bishal Bhattarai
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The influence of the external pressure and surface energy on the wetting transition at nanotextured interfaces is studied using molecular dynamics and continuum simulations. The surface roughness of the composite interface is introduced via an array of spherical nanoparticles with controlled wettability. We find that in the absence of an external pressure, the liquid interface is flat and its location relative to the solid substrate is determined by the particle size and the local contact angle. With increasing pressure on the liquid film, the interface becomes more curved and the three-phase contact line is displaced along the spherical surface but …
