The article presents incineration tests of silty-tar sludge produced in the wastewater treatment plant for coke industry. Sewage sludges were incinerated in a full-scale multiple hearth incinerator equipped with a wet flue-gas cleaning system (alkaline scrubber). Measurements of air pollutant emissions were carried out both before and after the cleaning system. The obtained results allow to conclude that the thermal utilization of sewage sludge in this type of installation might be just a little cumbersome for the environment, using the appropriate equipment for the purification of exhaust gases. The paper also specifies minimum exhaust gas cleaning performance that guarantees compliance ...

Assumptions for regional environmental monitoring in the province of Kielce were developed as early as 1992. Since the beginning of particular attention were monitoring the air. The article presents the next step in the implementation of this monitoring, associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants in Kielce. As a result of analysis and calculations, it was found that the original location is not always correct and does not reflect the spatial differentiation of pollutant concentrations. The proposed changes in the position of monitoring points or measurement methods were ...

Assessment of the state of air pollution in the urban area is a difficult and complex task. Depending on the method of assessment the procedure requires a comprehensive research and calculations of air emissions from all sources occurring in the area and the use of atmospheric dispersion models or large-scale implementation of direct measurements of air pollutant concentrations. Both of these methods may also be applied simultaneously to their mutual verification.

The article presents the results of such a comprehensive assessment of air pollution on the example of the city of Nowy Sacz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of ...

Ames Laboratory Publications

The self-diffusivity of 54Mn in single grain icosahedral Al70Pd21.5Mn8.5 quasicrystals has been determined by a precision grinding technique. In the range from 870 to 1093 K the temperature dependence of the Mn self-diffusivity D follows the Arrhenius equation with an activation energy Q = (180.8±4.6)kJmol-1 and a pre-exponential factor D0 = 3.4×10-4m2s-1. The experimental results are discussed together with diffusion mechanisms proposed for quasicrystals from theoretical considerations.

Equalization Of A Non-Linear Phase Of A Low-Pass Filter, Rabih Khodor Dec 1996

Equalization Of A Non-Linear Phase Of A Low-Pass Filter, Rabih Khodor

Dissertations and Theses

In practice, an IIR filter can distort the information content of the signal because of its inherent non-linear phase characteristics introduced through the design of the filter. If the the receiver of the signal is the human ear, e.g., when a speech or music signal is to be processed, phase distortion is quite tolerable. But, in other applications it can be rejected as phase characteristics is required to be fairly linear. Applications of this type include data transmission, where the signal is to be interpreted by digital hardware, and image processing, where the signal is used to reconstruct an ...

Properties Of Schottky Contacts Of Aluminum On Strained Si1-X-YGeXCY Layers, Jian Mi, Ashawant Gupta, Cary Y. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Schottky contacts of Al/Si1-x-yGexCy were fabricated using conventional Si technology. Effects of thermal processing of the alloys on the electrical properties of the Al/Si1-x-yGexCy Schottky diodes were investigated. Current–voltage (I–V), capacitance–voltage (C–V), and x‐ray diffraction measurements were performed. These thick alloy films (100–150 nm) experienced strain relaxation upon annealing at 700 °C. Nearly ideal I–V and C–V behaviors were obtained for strain‐compensated samples. I–V and C–Vcharacteristics show evidence of dislocation‐related traps for strain‐relaxed samples. Carbon ...

Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson Dec 1996

Detection For A Statistically-Known, Time-Varying Dispersive Channel, David W. Matolak, S. G. Wilson

Faculty Publications

Detection for the statistically known channel (SKC) is aimed at obtaining good performance in situations where our statistical knowledge of a time-varying channel is good, and where other equalization/detection schemes are either too complex to implement, or their performance is limited due to the rapidity of channel fading, or where we are simply unable to perform channel estimation. By using a statistical characterization of the channel, we develop a new detector that performs maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) (given the channel model) on blocks of N symbols. Both symbol-spaced and fractionally spaced samples are used, to obtain two different detectors ...

Improvements In A Hybrid Stochastic/Deterministic Method For Transient Three-Dimensional Neutron Transport, Charles L. Bentley Dec 1996

Improvements In A Hybrid Stochastic/Deterministic Method For Transient Three-Dimensional Neutron Transport, Charles L. Bentley

Doctoral Dissertations

This research develops an improved methodology (and corresponding code) for solving the time-dependent, three-dimensional Boltzmann Transport Equation with explicit representation of delayed neutrons. These improvements are incorporated in a modified version of the code TDKENO, entitled TDKENO-M. Specifically, these improvements are:

1. Incorporate the improved quasistatic methodology into an existing quasistatic framework. Specifically, include the flux shape derivative in the fixed source term instead of being neglected. Also, compute the point kinetics parameters deterministically by their inner product definitions.

2. Incorporate a hierarchy of three different integration time intervals for the numerical solution of the coupled set of ordinary differential ...

Analytical And Experimental Comparisons Between The Frequency-Modulated-Frequency-Shift Measurement And The Pulsed-Wave-Time-Shift Measurement Doppler Systems, Jens E. Wilhjelm, Peder C. Pedersen Dec 1996

Analytical And Experimental Comparisons Between The Frequency-Modulated-Frequency-Shift Measurement And The Pulsed-Wave-Time-Shift Measurement Doppler Systems, Jens E. Wilhjelm, Peder C. Pedersen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In previous publications, a new echo-ranging Doppler system based on transmission of repetitive coherent frequency-modulated (FM) sinusoids in two different implementations was presented. One of these implementations, the frequency-modulated-frequency-shift measurement (FM-fsm) Doppler system is, in this paper, compared with its pulsed-wave counterpart, the pulsed-wave-time-shift measurement (PW-tsm) Doppler system. When using transmitted PW and FM signals with a Gaussian envelope, the parallelism. between the two systems can be stated explicitly and comparison can be made between the main performance indices for the two Doppler systems. the performance of the FM and PW Doppler systems is evaluated by means of numerical simulation ...
