Superhydrophobic Surface On Aluminum Alloy By Hydrothermal Method And Its Electrochemical Performance, Xiao-Hang Chen, Mo-Jing Chen, Yu-Lin Min, Qun-Jie Xu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Superhydrophobic film formed on a metal surface is an effective way for corrosion protection. In this paper, the superhydrophobic film was prepared on the surfaces of aluminum alloy by hydrothermally treating with a solution containing CeCl3·7H2O and CO(NH2)2 , and a self-assemble process. The electrochemical measurements and surface morphology results confirmed that the best superhydrophobicity and electrochemical performance could be achieved with the contact angle of 155.5o after six hours of hydrothermal reaction. Furthermore, the inhibition efficiency of 99.6% was obtained in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution, indicating the excellent corrosion resistance …

Preparation And Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doping Tungsten Carbide Catalyst, Pian-Pian Yang, Li-Zhen Huang, Ying-Ying Li, Mei-Qin Shi, Chun-An Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

Tungsten carbide (WC) is a promising electrocatalyst, however, its electrocatalytic activity is far inferior to Pt and Pt-group metal. In this work, nitrogen-doping tungsten carbide (WN|WC) catalysts with a nanoplate morphology were prepared via the tungsten nitride (WN) as the precursor and sodium tungstate as the tungsten source. The SEM and TEM results indicated that carbon atoms entered into the WN lattice to form the hexagonal close packed WC phase. In this way, an atomic scale heterostructure involving the closely linked interfaces between WN and WC was created . The XRD data confirmed that the cubic crystal structure of WN …

An Electrochemical Investigation In The Anticorrosive Properties Of Silver Nanoparticles For The Acidic Corrosion Of Aluminium, A. Fetouh H., Abd-El-Nabey B.A., Goher Y.M., S. Karam M.

Journal of Electrochemistry

The mass loss, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were used for the determinations of the corrosion rates for aluminium in 1.0 mol·L-1 hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions both in the absence and presence of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) at 30 ℃. The protection efficiency was evaluated to be 96.4% for 0.014 g·L-1 of the SNPs. It has been found that the capacity of the electrical double layer at the aluminium/solution interface was decreased with increasing the concentration of the SNPs, indicating that the SNPs were adsorbed at the aluminium surface. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the kinetic-thermodynamic …

Surface Ehancement Of Nickel Ions On Cyanide Free Immersion Gold Deposited From A Chloroauric Acid-Choline Chloride Solution On Medium-Phosphorus Nickel, Tian-Yu Xu, Shi-Ying Wang, Wen-Chang Wang, Zhi-Dong Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The nickel ions (Ni2+) were introduced into choline chloride (ChCl) cyanide free immersion gold solution to improve the surface quality of electrodeposition on medium-phosphorus nickel substrate. The addition of Ni2+ had no significant impact on the plating speed. However, the hyperactive corrosion of nickel substrate could be effectively alleviated by the addition of 500 mg·L-1 NiCl2·6H2O, and the surface morphology of gold coating could be greatly improved. The choline chloride bath has great potential for industrial production due to its high Ni2+ carrying capacity (2000 mg·L-1) and superior applicability …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Emulative Connections In Precast Concrete Walls, Mohamed Gamal Elsayed Feb 2018

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Emulative Connections In Precast Concrete Walls, Mohamed Gamal Elsayed

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Grouted connections are widely used in the precast concrete construction. For instance, in precast concrete walls, they are used to connect assemblies of vertically stacked panels. The connection is comprised of a grout cylinder bound by a corrugated metallic duct, which is used to house a large diameter reinforcing bar bridging the horizontal gap of stacked panels. The connection is used to provide vertical continuity to the assembly, and to help resist tensile demands from in-plane bending. Current design guidelines consider such connections through a bar-in-concrete treatment, disregarding its composite nature and the confinement effect of the duct. This has …

Residual Tensile Strength And Bond Properties Of Gfrp Bars After Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Devon S. Ellis, Habib Tabatabai, Azam Nabizadeh

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Articles

The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars in reinforced concrete members enhances corrosion resistance when compared to traditional steel reinforcing bars. Although there is ample research available on the behavior of FRP bars and concrete members reinforced with FRP bars under elevated temperatures (due to fire), there is little published information available on their post-fire residual load capacity. This paper reports residual tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and bond strength (to concrete) of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars after exposure to elevated temperatures of up to 400 C and subsequent cooling to an ambient temperature. The results showed …

The 3d Stress-Tensor Bootstrap, Anatoly Dymarsky, Filip Kos, Petr Kravchuk, David Poland, David Simmons-Duffin Feb 2018

The 3d Stress-Tensor Bootstrap, Anatoly Dymarsky, Filip Kos, Petr Kravchuk, David Poland, David Simmons-Duffin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We study the conformal bootstrap for 4-point functions of stress tensors in parity-preserving 3d CFTs. To set up the bootstrap equations, we analyze the constraints of conformal symmetry, permutation symmetry, and conservation on the stress-tensor 4-point function and identify a non-redundant set of crossing equations. Studying these equations numerically using semidefinite optimization, we compute bounds on the central charge as a function of the independent coefficient in the stress-tensor 3-point function. With no additional assumptions, these bounds numerically reproduce the conformal collider bounds and give a general lower bound on the central charge. We also study the effect of gaps …

Development Of A Liquid Contacting Method For Investigating Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids, Vitalii Alekseevich Dereviankin Feb 2018

Development Of A Liquid Contacting Method For Investigating Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids, Vitalii Alekseevich Dereviankin

Dissertations and Theses

Photovoltaic (PV) devices based on PbS quantum dot (QD) solids demonstrate high photon-to-electron conversion yields. However, record power conversion efficiencies remain limited mainly due to bulk and interfacial defects in the light absorbing material (QD solids). Interfacial defects can be formed when a semiconductor, such as QD solid, is contacted by another material and may predetermine the semiconductor/metal or semiconductor/metal-oxide junction properties. The objective of the work described in this dissertation was set to explore whether electrochemical contacting using liquid electrolytes can provide sufficient means of contacting the QD solids to investigate their PV performance without introducing the unwanted interfacial …

Symmetric Equations For Evaluating Maximum Torsion Stress Of Rectangular Beams In Compliant Mechanisms, Guimin Chen, Larry L. Howell Feb 2018

Symmetric Equations For Evaluating Maximum Torsion Stress Of Rectangular Beams In Compliant Mechanisms, Guimin Chen, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

There are several design equations available for calculating the torsional compliance and the maximum torsion stress of a rectangular cross-section beam, but most depend on the relative magnitude of the two dimensions of the cross-section (i.e., the thickness and the width). After reviewing the available equations, two thickness-to-width ratio independent equations that are symmetric with respect to the two dimensions are obtained for evaluating the maximum torsion stress of rectangular cross-section beams. Based on the resulting equations, outside lamina emergent torsional joints are analyzed and some useful design insights are obtained. These equations, together with the previous work on symmetric …

Ultrasound-Augmented Laparoscopy, Uditha Lakmal Jayarathne Feb 2018

Ultrasound-Augmented Laparoscopy, Uditha Lakmal Jayarathne

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Laparoscopic surgery is perhaps the most common minimally invasive procedure for many diseases in the abdomen. Since the laparoscopic camera provides only the surface view of the internal organs, in many procedures, surgeons use laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) to visualize deep-seated surgical targets. Conventionally, the 2D LUS image is visualized in a display spatially separate from that displays the laparoscopic video. Therefore, reasoning about the geometry of hidden targets requires mentally solving the spatial alignment, and resolving the modality differences, which is cognitively very challenging. Moreover, the mental representation of hidden targets in space acquired through such cognitive medication may be …

In [15] it was shown that the spectrum and bilocal propagator of SYK model with four fermion interactions can be realized as a three dimensional model in AdS2 ×S1/Z2 with nontrivial boundary conditions in the additional dimension. In this paper we show that a similar picture holds for generalizations of the SYK model with q-fermion interactions. The 3D realization is now given on a space whose metric is conformal to AdS2 × S1/Z2 and is subject to a non-trivial potential in addition to a delta function at the center of …

Respirable Dust Monitoring In Construction Sites And Visualization In Building Information Modeling Using Real-Time Sensor Data, Nour Smaoui, Kyungki Kim, Omprakash Gnawali, Young-Joo Lee, Wonho Suh Feb 2018

Respirable Dust Monitoring In Construction Sites And Visualization In Building Information Modeling Using Real-Time Sensor Data, Nour Smaoui, Kyungki Kim, Omprakash Gnawali, Young-Joo Lee, Wonho Suh

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Construction activities, involving cutting, drilling, and grinding of materials, often produce toxic respirable dust that can cause fatal diseases and illnesses. To protect workers from breathing excessive amounts of respirable dust at job sites, superintendents should continuously monitor the level of respirable dust in workspaces and make timely interventions for overexposed workers. However, current practices of respirable dust monitoring have critical drawbacks, and superintendents cannot accurately estimate workers’ exposures to respirable dust or make prompt decisions to protect the workers. Therefore, there is a need for real-time air dust monitoring that can be deployed ubiquitously at a construction site and …

Real-time ultrasound has become a mainstay in many image-guided interventions and increasingly popular in several percutaneous procedures in anesthesiology. One of the main constraints of ultrasound-guided needle interventions is identifying and distinguishing the needle tip from needle shaft in the image. Augmented reality (AR) environments have been employed to address challenges surrounding surgical tool visualization, navigation, and positioning in many image-guided interventions. The motivation behind this work was to explore the feasibility and utility of such visualization techniques in anesthesiology to address some of the specific limitations of ultrasound-guided needle interventions. This thesis brings together the goals, guidelines, and best …

Covalently Crosslinked Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering Applications, Dibakar Mondal Feb 2018

Covalently Crosslinked Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering Applications, Dibakar Mondal

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Scaffolds are key components for bone tissue engineering and regeneration. They guide new bone formation by mimicking bone extracellular matrix for cell recruitment and proliferation. Ideally, scaffolds for bone tissue engineering need to be osteoconductive, osteoinductive, porous, degradable and mechanically competent. As a single material can not provide all these requirements, composites of several biomaterials are viable solutions to combine various properties. However, conventional composites fail to fulfil these requirements due to their distinct phases at the microscopic level. Organic/inorganic (O/I) class II hybrid biomaterials, where the organic and inorganic phases are chemically crosslinked on a molecular scale, hence the …

Hierarchical Random Boolean Network Reservoirs, Sai Kiran Cherupally Feb 2018

Hierarchical Random Boolean Network Reservoirs, Sai Kiran Cherupally

Dissertations and Theses

Reservoir Computing (RC) is an emerging Machine Learning (ML) paradigm. RC systems contain randomly assembled computing devices and can be trained to solve complex temporal tasks. These systems are computationally cheaper to train than other ML paradigms such as recurrent neural networks, and they can also be trained to solve multiple tasks simultaneously. Further, hierarchical RC systems with fixed topologies, were shown to outperform monolithic RC systems by up to 40% when solving temporal tasks. Although the performance of monolithic RC networks was shown to improve with increasing network size, building large monolithic networks may be challenging, for example because …

Debakanta Mishra

This paper presents findings from an ongoing research study at the University of Illinois focused on developing and calibrating an improved permanent deformation model for unbound aggregate materials through laboratory testing and characterization. The project scope included testing sixteen aggregate materials, commonly used in the state of North Carolina for pavement base courses, in the laboratory through monotonic and repeated load triaxial testing. This paper primarily focuses on quantifying effects of aggregate gradation on permanent deformation behavior. To accomplish this, four materials were tested at both: (1) “source gradations,” i.e. original gradations from quarry, and (2) an “engineered gradation,” i.e., …

Crack Growth Induced By Sonic Ir Inspection, John C. Chen, Jacob Kephart, Kyle Lick, William T. Riddell Feb 2018

Crack Growth Induced By Sonic Ir Inspection, John C. Chen, Jacob Kephart, Kyle Lick, William T. Riddell

William Riddell

We have developed an experiment to study the propagation of laboratory-synthesized fatigue cracks under various controlled conditions during Sonic IR inspection. The experiment provides for good repeatability in testing. The parameters of interest include the initial crack length, load history (stress intensity and load ratio) during crack generation, geometry of the crack, material and also the various conditions involving the ultrasonic excitation source. In general, we find that under typical sonic IR inspection conditions, the initial crack will propagate under sonic IR testing. The crack growth after each inspection event varies and exhibits a distribution in length of propagation. The …
