Despite this, manufacturing education is a glaring area of need in current engineering curricula. In today’s age of streaming services, the effectiveness and precision of recommendation systems are crucial in improving user satisfaction. This project introduces the Smart Hybrid Enhanced Recommendation and Personalization Algorithm (SHERPA) a cutting-edge machine learning approach aimed at transforming how movie suggestions are made. By combining Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) for content based filtering and Alternating Squares (ALS) with Weighted Regularization for filtering SHERPA offers a sophisticated method for delivering tailored recommendations.

Per and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals that are persistent in the environment. PFAS was found in wastewater, which can be used after wastewater treatment for irrigation water, and in the biosolids that can be mixed with soils to provide nutrients and generally improve soil quality. This study found when wastewater was used it increases the level of PFAS in vegetables and forage grass. Hybrid rocket motors that use a solid fuel grain and liquid oxidizer are low-cost and safer alternatives to traditional rocket motors. Another benefit of hybrid rocket motors is that during a burn, the amount of oxidizer into the combustion chamber can be changed, this capability is called throttling. To take advantage of the throttling ability of hybrid rocket motors, a throttling valve made up of 8 individually controlled valves is designed, developed, and tested, which is documented in this thesis. Electronic sensors can measure water and climate conditions at high frequency and generate large quantities of observed data. This work addresses data management challenges associated with the volume and complexity of high frequency water data. We developed techniques for automatically reviewing data, created materials for training water data managers, and explored existing and emerging technologies for sensor data management.

This paper uses LOESS regression to predict Manning's roughness coefficient to calculate flows in natural stream channels. Manning's roughness coefficient can introduce variability into Manning's equation, potentially destabilizing results. Utilizing LOESS to find n based on backcalculated n from collected discharge vs. stage information is the best way to acquire accurate Manning's roughness coefficient values at a variety of flows. Book values tend to drastically overestimate which can have wide-ranging implications for water allocation, flood management, maintaining environmental flows, and maintaining water quality.

This dissertation describes a physics-guided Bayesian learning approach for statistically modelling and optimizing machining processes under a state of uncertainty. This approach uses a series of automatically-selected cutting tests to refine uncertainties about the machining system's dynamics and cutting force and identify higher productivity cutting parameters. The algorithm is evaluated experimentally and compared to the cutting tool manufacturer’s recommendations, both in laboratory conditions and in an industrial setting to optimize the machining process for a large aluminum component. Machining carbon fiber composite materials poses significant challenges including rapid tool wear and decreased productivity. This research aims to address these challenges by developing a predictive model for surface roughness in carbon fiber composite milling operations using a cutting force-based approach.

This research applies a mechanistic cutting force model to force prediction in carbon fiber composite milling. In this project, chemical short-range order in four samples of the high entropy alloy FeMnAlC was investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements were performed at the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, IL. The data were then analyzed by curve fitting with mathematical Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. Conditional fitting was applied to the first and fourth samples to confirm the original curve fit. Conditional fitting was then used to adjust the determined indices of the Gaussian peaks in these samples so that they better reflected what was occurring in nature. Message-passing graph neural networks (MPGNNs) are known to have limitations in their representational power. Recent work proposes subgraph graph neural network (subgraph GNN) models to address these limitations by upgrading the local node representations of MPGNNs to respective subgraph representations. However, existing subgraph GNN models have limited interpretability in capturing inherent local structural dynamics across diverse graph structures. Accurate estimation of primary consolidation of in-situ marsh soils is inherently difficult in south Louisiana due to the soft, settlement prone soils and variable alluvial material. To investigate the accuracy of settlement analysis methods commonly utilized in local practice, estimates from numerical models were compared to the results of a settlement monitoring program at a project site during construction. Sensitivity analyses were then performed using several parameters that were used in the settlement analysis, and the results were compared to the field observations.

A century-old problem of electricity rate design is cost-shifting between ratepayers (Wellinghoff, J. & Tong, J., 2015). A much newer cost-shifting example of great and increasing importance happens whenever ratepayer generated “renewable energy” is sold to the grid—all too often, this is accused of being unfairly rewarded (Ritchie, 2016). This study is an investigation of the effect of biofouling on the boundary layer of a flat plate and a NACA 4-digit series foil. Three identical hydrofoils made of resin were placed in the Gulf of Mexico at Grand Isle, Louisiana, and observed and analyzed by marine biologists at the University of New Orleans for their species composition. The resulting biofouling that grew was primarily made up of barnacles and bryozoans. This thesis consists of two related parts. The first part is the study of supersonic/hypersonic flow in compression corners. The compression corners are simple geometries but rich in flow-features that can be challenging for accurate prediction of their flow fields in high-speed compressible flow using the Reynold-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in conjunction with a turbulence model. At higher degrees of corner angles, there exists a shock-boundary layer interaction region which includes a significant recirculation zone in the corner.
