Cost Of Engineering On Highway Projects, Walter John Shaffer Jan 1934

Cost Of Engineering On Highway Projects, Walter John Shaffer

Professional Degree Theses

"It is customary for highway departments to set up certain finances in addition to the contract price to take care of engineering and slight overruns in the contract quantities. Generally a certain percentage of the contract price is used. The Missouri Highway Commission follow the practice of setting up 10% of the contract price to finance the engineering, contingencies, and slight overruns. The term "engineering" as referred to in this paper consists of the salaries and incidental expenses of the project engineer and his assistants, project office rent, and transportation. It will be noted that the preliminary survey work, blue …

Efficient Management Of Highway Projects Under State Administration, From The Point Of View Of The Project Or Resident Engineer, Jean Paul Bryan Jan 1934

Efficient Management Of Highway Projects Under State Administration, From The Point Of View Of The Project Or Resident Engineer, Jean Paul Bryan

Professional Degree Theses

"Efficiency in any project is an admirable attribute. It is even more than admirable in an undertaking designed for the spending of the taxpayer's money in which the lack of this trait is so liable to be interpretated [sic] as graft. It is necessary. After some eight years of connection with highway construction, a familiarity with inefficiency in the management of high projects under state construction is sufficient excuse, we believe, to warrant a dissertation of the opportunities for the practice of efficiency by those in direct charge of these project - the Project Engineers or the Resident Engineers, as …

A New Theory Of The Spalling Of Fireclay Products With Relation To Thermal Expansion, Robert Legrande Stone Jan 1934

A New Theory Of The Spalling Of Fireclay Products With Relation To Thermal Expansion, Robert Legrande Stone

Bachelors Theses

"There is one factor that is responsible for much of the failure of refractories in furnaces and other metallurgical processes and boilers, namely spalling. Many times this action has been the cause of roofs to cave in, side walls to slump, and bungs to fail. Consequently it is a factor that is of utmost importance. The erosion and slag effects are also of greatest importance to refractory stability. Spalling, as referred to refractories, is defined as the breaking or crushing of the unit due to thermal, mechanical, or structural stresses, presenting newly exposed surfaces of the residual mass. Taking the …

Foundations For Aquatic Oil Wells, Henry Emmett Gross Jan 1934

Foundations For Aquatic Oil Wells, Henry Emmett Gross

Professional Degree Theses

"During the past decade, man has found the courage to drill for oil at those forbidding locations which were made inaccessible by several feet of water. Some of the major fields of the world have been developed by this new manner of work, and others might have been added had the stage been set for the play. The most spectacular marine oil field development occurred along the Santa Barbara Coast of California from 1929 to 1931. It was the writer's good fortune to have been an assistant to Mr. Hans E. A. Gude, the field engineer of Pacific Western Oil …

Fuller's Earth In Southeast Missouri, Willard Farrar

Professional Degree Theses

"Recent work, (1933-34) in southeastern Missouri by the Missouri Geological Survey has shown that deposits of bleaching clay occur in the Porters Creek formation of Tertiary age. Various localities in Scott and Stoddard counties are described, in which favorable conditions for development exist. The method of testing the clay for bleaching power is treated briefly. Suggestions are offered in regard to prospecting, mining and milling"--Abstract, page 5.

The Study And Solution Of A Corrosion Problem Induced By Air Conditioning, Frederick William Hoertel

Professional Degree Theses

"A recent personal investigation conducted by the writer has disclosed the extremely interesting fact that almost every large air conditioning plant in operation in St. Louis is experiencing serious difficulty in operation due to corrosion of some component part. With the ever increasing number of installations of large air conditioning plants the problem of corrosion prevention is becoming one of major economic importance"--Introduction, page 7.

Problems In The Cement Industry, William Alonzo Mccanless Jan 1934

Problems In The Cement Industry, William Alonzo Mccanless

Professional Degree Theses

"The major problem of the cement companies is the matter of marketing the product in sufficient quantities and at a price which will return a profit; however, there are some other problems that are of great interest to the engineers, i.e., the interest in the economics of cement based largely on its effect on the cost of contemplated structures"--page 1.

The Equilibrium Relations Of Nickel Sulfide With Copper And Sodium Sulfides, Walter A. Hamilton Jan 1934

The Equilibrium Relations Of Nickel Sulfide With Copper And Sodium Sulfides, Walter A. Hamilton

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The equilibrium relations of many of the metallic sulfides have long been a source of scientific and commercial interest, of particular interest, are the sulfides of nickel and copper, since the economic recovery of both of these useful metals, from their ores, involves the formation of a sulfide at some stage of the operations.

Effect Of Manganese And Arsenic Upon Current Efficiency In The Deposition Of Zinc From Zinc Sulphate Solution, Justin Kelly Jan 1934

Effect Of Manganese And Arsenic Upon Current Efficiency In The Deposition Of Zinc From Zinc Sulphate Solution, Justin Kelly

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Throughout the entire experiment the electrolysis were conducted in an eight-hundred cubic centimeter beaker. An excellent circulation of the solution was assured by means of an electric stirrer, vigorous gas evolution from the anodes, and by means of a regulated feed-discharge system. By means of this balance, solution of the same impurity concentration as that of the electrolyte was fed in the cell just as fast as the discharge was syphoned out.

Leaching Copper Minerals In The Butte District, Kenneth C. Bellows May 1933

Leaching Copper Minerals In The Butte District, Kenneth C. Bellows

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The history of mining in Butte is woven about three of our principal metals. The gold placers first attracted the attention of miners in 1863, and reached their peak production in 1867. Silver was the second metal mined, and this operation required the erection of large mills with a consequent increase in mining activity that made the district a prominent producer. Although the presence of copper in the silver ore had been known, the credit for the first development of the copper veins is due Senator W. A. Clark. The original Colusa, Mining Chief, and Gambetta claims were developed to …

A Study Of Montana Bentonite, William P. Ryan May 1933

A Study Of Montana Bentonite, William P. Ryan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Research has been undertaken both under Government and private auspices in an endeavor to develop uses for bentonite. Perhaps, the work done to date has had only in consideration the possible industrial importance of bentonite. No simple, quick methods for the determination of the properties or qualities of any particular bentonite have been developed.

In an attempt to establish whether or not there is a means of making rapid simple determinations of the quality of Montana bentonitic clays, and in particular, with regard to the uses to which the clays may be suited. The problem also involves a study of …
