Circulation Measurements About A Rapidly Pitching Airfoil Using An Ultrasonic System, F. J. Weber, Jr., William W. Durgin, H. Johari
Circulation Measurements About A Rapidly Pitching Airfoil Using An Ultrasonic System, F. J. Weber, Jr., William W. Durgin, H. Johari
Office of the Provost Scholarship
An ultrasonic system was developed to measure the circulation about a sinusoidally pitching NACA 4418 airfoil. The system consisted of two opposing ultrasonic ranging modules arranged such that the differences between the sound propagation times in opposite directions could be related to the instantaneous circulation. For the stationary airfoil, the measured lift coefficient was within 5% of the tabulated data while the observed stall angle was 2° less than the tabulated value. Measured hysteresis loops verified the applicability of the ultrasonic system to the dynamic stall problem. Measured maximum lift coefficients increased linearly with reduced frequency up to a value …
Nanosubharmonics: The Dynamics Of Small Nonlinear Contacts, Nancy Burnham, A Kulik, G Gremaud, Gad Briggs
Nanosubharmonics: The Dynamics Of Small Nonlinear Contacts, Nancy Burnham, A Kulik, G Gremaud, Gad Briggs
Nancy A. Burnham
We observed the generation of subharmonics and chaos in a nanometer-sized mechanical contact. To first order, the behavior matches that of macroscopic systems, with some intriguing secondary differences. As the occurrence of periodic behavior (subharmonics) is related to the coefficient of restitution, it may be possible to image local energy dissipation with nanometer resolution.

Development Of A Graduate Integrated Waste Management Course Using The Case Study Approach, Samuel A. Vigil
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Solid waste management is an integral part of the environmental engineering profession. At California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), solid waste management is taught as a required course in an undergraduate environmental engineering curriculum. The undergraduate course is described in Reference 1. This paper discusses the development of a graduate level integrated waste management course entitled "Resource and Energy Recovery from Waste", which uses a case study approach. The course focuses on resource and energy recovery technologies including composting, unit operations of resource recovery, recycling, and thermal waste conversion including combustion and gasification. The bioconversion of wastes in landfills and …

Field Commissioning Of A Daylight-Dimming Lighting System, Florida Solar Energy Center, David Floyd
FSEC Energy Research Center®
An Elementary School cafeteria in Florida was commissioned with a fluorescent lighting system that dims in response to available daylight. The lighting system's performance and commissioning aspects were evaluated through real time measurement of lighting and air conditioning power, work plane illumination, and interior/exterior site conditions. The new system produced a 27% reduction in lighting power due to dimming. Lower than expected dimming system performance was observed prior to effective commissioning. Difficulties encountered are discussed as well as recommendations for performance improvements.

Engineering Properties And Application Of Cement-Based Fly Ash Blocks, R. Huang, J.J. Chang, W. Yeih
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Under the consideration of environmental protection, direct disposal of coal ash is not acceptable. It is required to solidify fly ash before ocean disposal or land disposal. The objective of this study is to investigate the properties and the possible applications of the solid blocks produced from fly ash. Thirty-six mixes have been proportioned using different cementing materials such as portland cement, lime, sludge treatment compound, and industrial silica slag. Extensive laboratory studies have been conducted to evaluate the block properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and soundness. In addition, the possible engineering application is also evaluated. …

Aggregate Effect On Elastic Moduli Ofcement-Based Composite Materials, C.C. Yang, R. Huang, W. Yeih, I.C. Sue
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The elastic moduli of cement-based composite materials with different types of aggregates were investigated in this study. Twelve mixes with various volume fractions (10%, 20%, and 30% ) were selected. Cylindrical specimens with a dimension of ∮ 10 x 20 cm were cast and tested. Electric strain gages were used and elastic moduli were obtained from the stressstrain curves. Theoretical moduli were calculated based on H-S bounds and micromechanics. Test results show that the types and volume fractions of aggregates significantly affect the elastic moduli of concrete composite materials and the theoretical predictions fairly agree with the experimental data.
Optimization Of Design Parameters For Spines Of Various Geometries, Rong-Hua Yeh
Optimization Of Design Parameters For Spines Of Various Geometries, Rong-Hua Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
This work presents a systematic study on the optimum base diameter, length, heat dissipation, temperature profile, and efficiency of spines by employing fin parameter versus fin efficiency method. The temperature dependent heat transfer coefficient is assumed to be a power-law type. Several common fin geometries including cylindrical, convex parabolic, conical, and concave parabolic profiles are investigated respectively. It is found that the optimum dimensions of spines are functions of fin volume, heat transfer coefficient at fin base, and thermal conductivity. To facilitate the thermal design of heat transfer components, simple mathematical expressions as well as design charts are presented.

Note On Effect Of Elastic Deformation At The Root Of A Cantilever Beam, M.T. Liang, D.B. Chan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Parkes neglected elastic strains and examined a classical problem of rigid- plastic structural dynamics for finding the deformation of a cantilever beam carrying a mass at its tip which is subjected to a short pulse loading. Symonds and Fleming examined the Parkes problem by making comparison between exact numerical solutions obtained from an ABAQUS program for an elastic-plastic beam and the rigid-plastic solution slightly modified to allow for large deformation. Further observation is acquired by comparision also with a simplified elastic-plastic approach based on treatment of elastic and plastic action in artificially separated stages. and Yu examined the Parkes problem …

A Calculation Method For Transport Properties For The Prediction Of Combustion Characteristics Of Marine Fuel Oils, Cherng-Yuan Lin, Tze-Chin Pan, Cheh-Shiung Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The primary purpose of this study is to propose a calculation method of transport properties in numerical studies on the combustion of marine diesel fuel oils which are composed of undefined hydrocarbon components and various extents of immiscible matters. This proposed method is further applied to the theoretical analysis for the combustion model for a single liquid droplet. It is shown that fuel oil A has the properties of higher flame temperature and burning rate constant while lower stand-off ratio and mass burning rate than those of heavy fuel oil C. The proposed calculation procedure is also suggested to be …
Simplified Procedure For Evaluating Soil Liquefaction Characteristics, Shuh-Gi Chern, Tain-Shyang Chang
Simplified Procedure For Evaluating Soil Liquefaction Characteristics, Shuh-Gi Chern, Tain-Shyang Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the evaluation of liquefaction characters for soil subjected to earthquake induced cyclic loading. Cyclic triaxial test results are used to develop the basic model. It is then used to evaluate cyclic shear strength τR, number of cycles required to cause liquefaction Nι or failure condition Nf , and the generation of excess pore water pressure Ug. The development of this model is a great breakthrough for the evaluation of liquefaction characteristics for soils under earthquake loadings.

Faculty Publications
We previously reported several static three-dimensional (3-D) display implementations of the partial pixel architecture [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 12, 73 (1995)]. We report herein our f irst real-time 3-D display based on this architecture. The display is functionally equivalent to a real-time holographic stereogram. It is autostereoscopic and provides horizontal motion parallax. The display device is composed of a diffractive optical element (fabricated with standard photolithographic techniques) and a separate conventional liquidcrystal display. The display has been used to play back a precomputed animated 3-D scene at video frame rates using a standard VGA video output.
