Changing patterns of the elevated atmospheric temperatures, increased rainfall variabilities, and more frequent drought events have made the wild blueberry industry of Maine vulnerable, suggesting the adoption of novel approaches to mitigate the negative impacts of global climate changes. Also, wild blueberry …

The Influence Of Processing And Additives On Cellulose Nanofiber Properties For Orthopedic Application, Mitchell P. Chesley Aug 2022

The Influence Of Processing And Additives On Cellulose Nanofiber Properties For Orthopedic Application, Mitchell P. Chesley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current orthopedics are separated into three different classes of materials, metals, polymers, and ceramics. While these devices have had success throughout the years they are not without their faults. Metallic devices for example are usually extraordinarily stiff when compared with the surrounding bone. This difference in stiffness induces localized stress-shielding promoting cortical atrophy, which can lead to osteoporosis. Polymers while having the capacity of being biodegradable and bioabsorbable also have the potential to incite localized demineralization and weakness in surrounding bone. A result of breakdown byproducts not efficiently being evacuated from the area, which additionally acts as catalysts expediating the …

Numerical Modeling Of Localized Heating In Continuous Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Laminates, James T. Gayton Aug 2022

Numerical Modeling Of Localized Heating In Continuous Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Laminates, James T. Gayton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The manufacturing of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) laminates requires the application of heat and pressure. Standard CFRTP manufacturing methods like thermoforming take a global approach to manufacturing, where the whole part is heated and undergoes a forming process. There is an opportunity to develop advanced manufacturing methods based on localized heating and deformations of consolidated stock. This thesis provides a localized heating method via networks of resistive heating elements embedded within the laminate and a means to evaluate that method.

Typical heating methods for CFRTP laminates include infrared and convective ovens or surface contact heaters. They have the same drawbacks …

Thermomagnetic-Responsive Self-Folding Microgrippers For Improving Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques And Biopsies, Caleigh R. Dunn, Bruce Lee, Rupak Rajachar Aug 2022

Thermomagnetic-Responsive Self-Folding Microgrippers For Improving Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques And Biopsies, Caleigh R. Dunn, Bruce Lee, Rupak Rajachar

Michigan Tech Publications

Traditional open surgery complications are typically due to trauma caused by accessing the procedural site rather than the procedure itself. Minimally invasive surgery allows for fewer complications as microdevices operate through small incisions or natural orifices. However, current minimally invasive tools typically have restricted maneuverability, accessibility, and positional control of microdevices. Thermomagnetic-responsive microgrippers are microscopic multi-fingered devices that respond to temperature changes due to the presence of thermal-responsive polymers. Polymeric devices, made of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (pNIPAM-AAc) and polypropylene fumarate (PPF), self-fold due to swelling and contracting of the hydrogel layer. In comparison, soft metallic devices feature a pre-stressed metal bilayer …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Over the past three decades, Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has grown from a tool for monitoring earthquakes and other massive signature deformation events to tracking the subtle, slow deformation processes associated with changes in groundwater storage. Improvements in time-series processing and noise reduction, as well as improved models of deformation, have enabled this advancement. InSAR has proven to be a valuable tool for characterizing elastic deformation in regions experiencing little long-term storage loss, as well as inelastic deformation in over-stressed aquifers.

Failures in the oil and gas pipeline system are conditions that must be avoided and anticipated because the losses due to the failures can occur at a very high level. Internal corrosion is one of the significant causes of the failures in pipeline systems. In addition, this type of corrosion is due to the high content of carbon dioxide and other corrosive substances in crude oil and natural gas. Therefore, an optimal inspection scheduling system is required to prevent the possibility of pipeline failures due to corrosion and to avoid any overspending on the budget due to excessive inspection scheduling. …
