A Heuristic Approach To Predict The Tensile Strength Of A Non-Persistent Jointed Brazilian Disc Under Diametral Loading, Mostafa Asadizadeh, Nima Babanouri, Taghi Sherizadeh

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical response of rock bridges plays a key role in the stability of concrete and rock structures. In particular, the tensile failure of non-persistent discontinuities can result in their coalescence and the failure of rock or concrete engineering structures. The effect of non-persistent joint parameters on rock structures' failure under tensile mode has not been investigated by many researchers yet. Many non-persistent jointed Brazilian concrete discs are tested under diametral loading in this work, to study the influence of joint spacing, joint continuity factor, loading direction with regard to joint angle, and bridge angle on their tensile behavior. Heuristic …

The main goal was to assess capability of the improved method by applying it to a shake-table-tested prototype bridge with sparse instrumentation. The bridge was a 4-span reinforced concrete structure comprising two columns at each bent (6 columns total) and a flat slab. It was tested to failure using seven biaxial excitations at its base. Availability of a robust …

Tunable Filtration Of Particles During Dip-Coating, Connor Copeland Sep 2022

Tunable Filtration Of Particles During Dip-Coating, Connor Copeland

All Theses

When a solid substrate is withdrawn from a liquid bath a thin coating is deposited whose thickness is given by the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin (LLD) law. We perform an experimental study of dip coating of particle suspensions showing that particles of a given size can become entrained in the meniscus by the competition between viscous and surface tension forces. This is called capillary filtration and can be used as a tunable dynamic filter. For single particle suspensions, filtration can be in terms of either clumps or single particles, with the relevant entrainment points depending upon the rheology of the working fluid, either …

Orbit Determination With Event-Based Cameras To Improve Space Domain Awareness, Conor M. Wisentaner Sep 2022

Orbit Determination With Event-Based Cameras To Improve Space Domain Awareness, Conor M. Wisentaner

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to assess the utility of a COTS EBC for SDA applications by evaluating its ability to produce data for orbit updates of resident space objects. Unlike traditional frame-based imaging sensors, the pixels on an EBC activate independently when a change in brightness is detected to produce a continuous data flow on a per pixel basis. This unique functionality provides much higher temporal resolution than traditional frame-based sensors, such that an EBC can generate far more data points from a single observation than a frame-based sensor. However, current COTS EBCs have less spatial resolution than …

A New Network-Based Community Detection Algorithm For Disjoint Communities, Peli̇n Çeti̇n, Şahi̇n Emrah Amrahov

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A community is a group of people that shares something in common. The definition of the community can be generalized as things that have common properties. By using this definition, community detection can be used to solve different problems in various areas. In this study, we propose a new network-based community detection algorithm that can work on different types of datasets. The proposed algorithm works on unweighted graphs and determines the weight by using cosine similarity. We apply a bottom-up approach and find the disjoint communities. First, we accept each node as an independent community. Then, the merging process is …

This study presents design and optimization of compact and efficient nanooptical couplers involving photonic crystals. Nanooptical couplers that have single and double input ports are designed to obtain efficient transmission of electromagnetic waves in desired directions. In addition, these nanooptical couplers are cascaded by adding one after another to realize electromagnetic transmission systems. In the design and optimization of all these nanooptical couplers, the multilevel fast multipole algorithm, which is an efficient full-wave solution method, is used to perform electromagnetic analyses and simulations. A heuristic optimization method based on genetic algorithms is employed to obtain effective designs that provide the …

Error Analysis Of Siso And Dual-Branch Communications With Generalized Gaussian Noise Over Ftr Fading Channels, Mehmet Bi̇li̇m Sep 2022

Error Analysis Of Siso And Dual-Branch Communications With Generalized Gaussian Noise Over Ftr Fading Channels, Mehmet Bi̇li̇m

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present error probability analysis for single-input single-output (SISO) and asymmetric dual-branch networks with additive white generalized Gaussian noise (AWGGN) over millimeter-wave (mmW) fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading channels. Then, we examine the error probability evaluation of a SISO system with imperfect phase errors over mmW FTR fading channels. The probability density function (PDF) approach is employed for the error probability performance evaluation and the novel PDF of the asymmetric dual-branch system over Nakagami-m/mmW FTR fading channels is obtained. Specifically, closed-form expressions are derived for the error probability of the SISO and asymmetric dual-branch networks. The derived error …

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a vital diagnosis approach for the rapid explication and detection of various heart diseases, especially cardiac arrest, sinus rhythms, and heart failure. For this purpose, in this study, a different perspective based on downsampling one-dimensional-local binary pattern (1D-DS-LBP) and long short-term memory (LSTM) is presented for the categorization of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. A transformation method named 1DDS-LBP has been presented for Electrocardiogram signals. The 1D-DS-LBP method processes the bigness smallness relationship between neighbors. According to the proposed method, by downsampling the signal, the histograms of 1D local binary patterns (1D-LBP) calculated from the obtained signal groups are …

A Compact Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Employing Shorted Quarterwave Patch Antennas, Feza Turgay Çeli̇k, Lale Alatan, Hati̇ce Özlem Aydin Çi̇vi̇ Sep 2022

A Compact Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Employing Shorted Quarterwave Patch Antennas, Feza Turgay Çeli̇k, Lale Alatan, Hati̇ce Özlem Aydin Çi̇vi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a compact pattern reconfigurable antenna structure is proposed. The proposed antenna is a half-wave square microstrip patch antenna divided into two quarter-wave antenna portions by a conducting wall. This wall forces potential zero at the connection point; therefore, it separates the antenna into two independent quarter-wave portions. Pattern reconfiguration is achieved by separate feeding of the quarter-wave portions. Phase difference between excitations of antenna ports result in variation at the maximum beam direction. Hence, pattern reconfiguration is achieved. Within such a compact antenna, beam steering up to 400 is achieved

Chemical Disease Relation Extraction Through The Combination Of Multiple Mention Levels: Relscan+, Stanley Chika Onye, Nazi̇fe Di̇mi̇li̇ler, Ari̇f Akkeleş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Chemical-induced disease (CID) relation extraction has been pivotal in the understanding of biological processes. A CID relation between a chemical and disease entity may be extracted either from a single sentence or from two or more adjacent sentences. We use `intrasentence level' to refer to the mention of the desired entities in the same sentence and `intersentence level? to refer to the mention of these entities in two or more adjacent sentences. This study proposes a three-phase architecture for extracting CID relations from biomedical literature by considering both sentence levels and additionally the combination of these two sentence levels which …

A Quantitative Evaluation Of Explainable Ai Methods Using The Depth Of Decision Tree, Nizar Abdulaziz Mahyoub Ahmed, Adi̇l Alpkoçak

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is necessary to develop an explainable model to clarify how and why a medical model makes a particular decision. Local posthoc explainable AI (XAI) techniques, such as SHAP and LIME, interpret classification system predictions by displaying the most important features and rules underlying any prediction locally. Therefore, in order to compare two or more XAI methods, they must first be evaluated qualitatively or quantitatively. This paper proposes quantitative XAI evaluation metrics that are not based on biased and subjective human judgment. On the other hand, it is dependent on the depth of the decision tree (DT) to automatically and …

Diacritics Correction In Turkish With Context-Aware Sequence To Sequence Modeling, Asi̇ye Tuba Özge, Özge Bozal, Umut Özge Sep 2022

Diacritics Correction In Turkish With Context-Aware Sequence To Sequence Modeling, Asi̇ye Tuba Özge, Özge Bozal, Umut Özge

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Digital texts in many languages have examples of missing or misused diacritics which makes it hard for natural language processing applications to disambiguate the meaning of words. Therefore, diacritics restoration is a crucial step in natural language processing applications for many languages. In this study we approach this problem as bidirectional transformation of diacritical letters and their ASCII counterparts, rather than unidirectional diacritic restoration. We propose a context-aware character-level sequence to sequence model for this transformation. The model is language independent in the sense that no language-specific feature extraction is necessary other than the utilization of word embeddings and is …

Laser-Induced Galfenol Embedded Multi-Layer Graphene-Oxide In Solution, Devyn Duryea, Nirmala Kandadai

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The proposed work demonstrates the direct synthesis of nanomaterial-embedded laser-induced few-layer graphene-oxide by directly ablating galfenol in a water-based solution for the first time. Laser-induced multilayer graphene-oxide (GO) embedded with galfenol (gallium–iron alloy) nanoparticles (NPs) is created through a method of direct laser inscription of bulk galfenol in deionized (DI) water with femtosecond laser ablation. The NP-embedded GO is achieved by irradiating a near-infrared (near-IR) femtosecond laser at 1040 nm on a bulk galfenol material submerged in a solution comprising DI water and a small concentration (5%/wt.) of polyvinylpyrrolidone followed by a second ablation in pure DI water. Results show …

Multichannel Blind Deconvolution Of Circularly Polarized Imagery, Patrick B. Cunningham Sep 2022

Multichannel Blind Deconvolution Of Circularly Polarized Imagery, Patrick B. Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

Current methods can be used to recreate an expected Stokes polarization vector from measured light for characterization purposes. However, this only applies to three of the Stokes parameters, that is, the linear polarization components. Circular polarization is not currently being utilized for object characterization because the mathematical complexity is greater than for that of linear polarization. This research will analyze a way to expand existing algorithms to include circular polarization and enable the complete reconstruction of the Stokes vector from the measured light into a blind deconvolution algorithm for Stokes estimation and image reconstruction.
