Bend And Not Break: Examining Hispanic Engineering Student's Academic Challenges During Covid-19, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Student success in higher education remains an area of interest, particularly for underrepresented minorities. Studies reveal that while Latino college enrollment has increased, retention rates continue to be an ongoing struggle. Several factors that attribute to such low rates include academic self-concept, family support, cognitive mapping, managing resources, background characteristics, and separation and maintenance of family ties. In the wake of COVID-19, most institutions responded by terminating in-person instruction, mandating to seek off-campus housing, and shifting to a fully remote context. As such, students were unable to utilize campus resources and engage in established educational campus practices. In this research …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Ground high-pressure advanced regional grouting has become the preferred engineering method for the prevention and control of water disasters in coal mines. The diffusion mechanism of grout has received widespread attention, and the design of branch hole spacing mostly relies on the on-site experience, which has a certain degree of blindness and restricts the effectiveness and efficiency of the project. Based on the actual working conditions of grouting site in Hengyuan Coal Mine, Huaibei Coalfield, the numerical simulation was performed with the COMSOL Multiphysics software for the high-pressure grout diffusion in the floor area of the ground directional drilling coal …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Effectively propping open hydraulic fractures in coal reservoirs plays an important role in ensuring the efficient production of coalbed methane (CBM). This study investigated the effects of fracture morphology and the volume, injection rate, and properties of fracturing fluids on proppant transport in fractures through visualized experiments. The results are as follows: (1) Proppants showed a relatively homogeneous distribution in simple fractures with a constant aperture. In contrast, they form room-and-pillar props composed of proppant pillars and proppant-free rooms in local simple fractures with varying apertures and reticular fractures due to the effects of the varying flow rates of fracturing …

Effects Of Increasing Sintering Pressure On The Performance Of Impregnated Diamond Bit, Yang Zhan, Tan Songcheng, Fang Xiaohong, Yang Kaihua Jun 2023

Effects Of Increasing Sintering Pressure On The Performance Of Impregnated Diamond Bit, Yang Zhan, Tan Songcheng, Fang Xiaohong, Yang Kaihua

Coal Geology & Exploration

The matrix formulas of conventional hot-pressed impregnated diamond bits are mostly elemental metal systems, using WC or YG8 as the skeleton materials, Cu alloys as the bonding materials, and Ni, Co, Fe and Mn as the intermediate materials. Due to the compositions and contents of the bonding and skeleton materials in the formulas, the suitable sintering pressure is limited (≤16 MPa), while the sintering temperature is relatively high (≥ 930℃), resulting in a lower relative ratio of the actual and theoretical densities (≤98%) for the diamond bit matrix. However, the high sintering temperature will cause thermal damage to the diamonds, …

In terms of drill pipe drop caused by the random fracture during drilling, the shortcomings of fishing tap were pointed out. By analyzing the fracture characteristics of drill pipe, it is concluded that the key to solve the problem of drill pipe drop is to develop the axial connection technology after the fracture of pin joint. Herein, an active anti-drop technology with fracture self-locking function was …

Evaluating The Quality Of Interviews With A Process-Based, Self-Reflective Tool, James L. Huff Ph.D., Amy L. Brooks Jun 2023

Evaluating The Quality Of Interviews With A Process-Based, Self-Reflective Tool, James L. Huff Ph.D., Amy L. Brooks

Engineering and Physics Faculty Research and Publications

This methods paper presents the interview quality reflection tool (IQRT) to evaluate the quality of qualitative research interviews. Qualitative researchers commonly use semi-structured interviews that rely on the interviewers’ ability to improvise in real time based upon the needs of the study. Given that interviewing involves numerous tacit skills that cannot be delineated by a simple written protocol, it is necessary that researchers develop interview competencies through practice and reflection. While prior literature on interviewing has often focused on developing interview protocols, we know little about how interviewers themselves may be trained to gather high-quality data. In this paper, we …
