Liquid-Vapor Equilibria In The System Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, John Wilson Sjoberg Jan 1948

Liquid-Vapor Equilibria In The System Methanol-Ethylene Glycol-Water, John Wilson Sjoberg

Masters Theses

"The freezing points of the system methanol-glycol-water were investigated by Conrad, Hill and Ballman to determine the suitability of such mixtures for use as an antifreeze. The low freezing points obtained seem to warrant further investigation of other properties of the system. Especially important would be the vapor-liquid equilibrium relations of the system, since one of the desirable features of such a mixture would be low vapor pressures. It is well known that when one substance is dissolved in another, each lowers the vapor pressure of the other. It was for the purpose of determining these relations that the present …

Analysis Of Simultaneous Faults By The Method Of Symmetrical Components, Robert Marshall Montgomery Jan 1948

Analysis Of Simultaneous Faults By The Method Of Symmetrical Components, Robert Marshall Montgomery

Masters Theses

"The object of this thesis is to present a method for the analytic determination of fault currents and voltages of a symmetrical three-phase system that is subjected to three simultaneous faults. The fault analysis is to be effected by the method of symmetrical components...Though relatively infrequent, simultaneous faults are important because relay systems, operating satisfactorily for single faults, may fail to isolate simultaneous faults. Therefore, it seems worthwhile to have in convenient form a method for calculating short-circuit currents and voltages caused by faults occurring at the same time at three separate and distinct points of a system. It is …

A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen Jan 1948

A Test Method For Measuring The Flow In Refractory Materials At High Temperatures, Christen Knudsen

Masters Theses

"One of the most important properties of refractory materials is the ability to resist stress which may either be directly applied or originate in the material. The factors which govern the resistance to stress include the modulus of elasticity, the ultimate strength under different types of stress, and the "flow" characteristics which become of importance when the material is stressed at the temperature at which plasticity is developed. Systematic determinations of the mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and ultimate or breaking stress is rather difficult or more or less impossible to carry out at the temperature at which …

Reflectorizing Surfaces For Signs And Markers, L. E. Gregg Jan 1948

Reflectorizing Surfaces For Signs And Markers, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The attached copy of a proposed special specification for reflectorizing surfaces for signs and markers is submitted with the recommendation that this be considered by the specification committee, and furthermore that it be considered tentative. The specification was drawn up at the request of the Division of Maintenance in order that they would have some basis for differentiating materials offered by different vendors when invitations for bids are taken. I am sure that Mr. Palmer and Mr. Ringo consider the matter urgent.

The Influence Of Cartridge Diameter On The Effectiveness Of Dynamite, Charles Harding Noren Jan 1948

The Influence Of Cartridge Diameter On The Effectiveness Of Dynamite, Charles Harding Noren

Masters Theses

"For many years the manufacturers of explosives have attempted to show the advantages of using dynamite of a cartridge diameter of at least 1-1/8 inches. Tests by the manufacturers and by the United States Bureau of Mines hare definitely shown that the dynamites prepared in larger diameter cartridges have several advantages: They are more sensitive to detonation; they detonate at a higher velocity; they are resistant to water; they are safer to use; and they are more stable than dynamites made in smaller diameter cartridges. In spite of these advantages listed, several large consumers still insist on smaller diameter cartridges. …

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Tin Equilibrium System, James Eugene Reynolds Jan 1948

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Titanium-Tin Equilibrium System, James Eugene Reynolds

Masters Theses

"Titanium is estimated to comprise about .63% of the lithosphere and atmosphere. This would render it the ninth in abundance of all the elements, and fourth in abundance of the metals suitable for mechanical and structural uses, being exceeded only by iron, aluminum, and magnesium. It is approximately 400 times more abundant than lead, which is generally considered to be quite plentiful. The chief restriction of the commercial availability of titanium in its pure form has been the difficulty of reducing it from its ores. Several methods have been proposed in the past and recent years, and R. S. Dean …

Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam Jan 1948

Dust Control In Mining Industry And Some Aspects Of Silicosis, Mathuramuthoo Subramanyam

Masters Theses

"The deleterious effect on human beings of dust in mine air is well-known. It is the duty of engineers, therefore, to take measures to eliminate it. It is now definitely established that of all the various types of dust encountered in mine air, silica dust is the most harmful. This dust, if inhaled over a period of time, causes the disease, silicosis, which in most countries is compensated for as a physical disability. The prevention of alleviation of this scourge is analyzed in three broad aspects: 1. If the mine air is as clean as outside atmospheric air, silicosis will …

Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand Jan 1948

Synthesis Involving Waste Carbon Dioxide, Glenn Eldon Brand

Masters Theses

"Many industries, ranging from power plants to breweries, produce large quantities of carbon dioxide as a by-product. The burning of limestone with natural gas produces a relatively clean gas in which the carbon dioxide content may exceed 40 per cent. It is with this type gas that the present thesis will be concerned. In this process the burning of the limestone is accomplished by using natural gas as a fuel, burning usually under a pressure of about two pounds, and obtaining carbon dioxide from the combustion of the gas and the decomposition of the limestone. Such a plant producing 70 …

A Study Of Certain Ferromagnetic Alloys In The Systems Copper-Manganese-Indium And Copper-Manganese-Gallium, Frederick Arthur Hames Jan 1948

A Study Of Certain Ferromagnetic Alloys In The Systems Copper-Manganese-Indium And Copper-Manganese-Gallium, Frederick Arthur Hames

Doctoral Dissertations

"In 1898 F. Heusler discovered that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin are ferromagnetic. Since that time, ferromagnetic alloys have been reported to occur in the ternary systems copper-manganese-aluminum, copper-manganese-arsenic, copper-manganese-boron, copper-manganese-antimony, copper-manganese-zinc, silver-manganese-aluminum, and silver-manganese-tin. Such ferromagnetic alloys containing only non-ferromagnetic elements have come to be called "Heusler alloys."

From the metallographic standpoint, the ferromagnetic copper-manganese-aluminum and copper-manganese-tin alloys have been the most fully investigated of the Heusler alloys. These alloys owe their ferromagnetism to the beta phases in their respective systems. The structure of the beta phase is based on a body-centered cubic lattice.

Experiments With Air Entrainment In Cement Concrete, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory Oct 1947

Experiments With Air Entrainment In Cement Concrete, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In September, 1946, the Research Laboratory prepared and distributed a comprehensive report entitled. "A Summary of Experiments With Air Entrainment in Cement Concrete", which covered field and laboratory experimentation conducted over a period of six years. In February, 1947, specific recommendations based on this report and another dealing with the pressure method of determining air contents resulted in adoption of air entrainment for all concrete pavements and the pressure method as the only accepted method of control.

Among the several projects included in the six years of research were four experimental roads which, of course, are still in service. Although …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Research Project C-22 is an investigation of the geologic aspects of limestone aggregate that might cause failure if used in highway construction, as reported earlier. As the study was to be approached from a new standpoint, it was allowed to mature along significant lines. At present a working plan has been adopted and is shown here in some detail.

A Study Of The Effect Of Blended Coarse Aggregate On Air Entrained Concrete, S. T. Collier, L. E. Gregg Oct 1947

A Study Of The Effect Of Blended Coarse Aggregate On Air Entrained Concrete, S. T. Collier, L. E. Gregg

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This research with combined coarse aggregates in cement concrete was initiated at the request of the Director of Design as a direct result of the condition study made by the Division of Design in 1945. In the report on this study it was shown that on the basis of averages pertaining to 80 projects with crashed limestone totalling about 395 miles in length, and 70 projects with Ohio River Gravel totalling approximately 410 miles in length, the service record for pavements with the river gravel was far inferior to that of pavements containing limestone coarse aggregate.

Specifically, the summary of …

Water And Water Vapor Barriers For Structural Plywood : Ii. Core Void Fillers For Structural Plywood., James Van Dyck Fear

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the results of an investigation conducted to improve the weather resistance of plywood assemblies used in prefabricated housing manufacture. Specifically, this work involved water sealers for edge joints (called edge sealers), the prevention of surface transfer of water vapor through plywood (called vapor barriers), and fillers for structural defects in the wood (called core void fillers). Two edge sealers for plywood were developed that were considered successful in resisting water permeation. One was a quick drying paint formulated by the addition of 30 per cent leaded zinc oxide to 70 per cent Arco primer paint No. 156. …

An Experiment With Expanded-Metal Integrating Mats In Bituminous Concrete Pavement, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory Sep 1947

An Experiment With Expanded-Metal Integrating Mats In Bituminous Concrete Pavement, Kentucky Highway Materials Research Laboratory

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This is an initial report of an experiment dealing with the use of expanded metal mats placed between the binder and surface courses of a Class I bituminous pavement at a location where a bituminous pavement of different design had shoved under heavy traffic. The purpose of the mats, of course, was to integrate the pavement in both longitudinal and transverse directions; the theory being that a small portion of the pavement, when subjected to a force that would ordinarily cause shoving, could actuelly shove only if an entire section of the embedded mat could be moved by that force. …

Geology And Mines Of The Upper Blackfoot Valley, Montana, Thomas K. Shea Jun 1947

Geology And Mines Of The Upper Blackfoot Valley, Montana, Thomas K. Shea

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purchase and continued operation of the Mike Horse mine in the Heddleston district, by the American Smelting and Refining Company, gives the Blackfoot Valley a renewed promise of a prosperous future in its role as a mining district. In the past, large amounts of placer gold were recovered from the gulches of the area, however, because of the transportation facilities, only the upper portions of a few lodes were exploited by the early miners.

This thesis is a report on coatings exclusive of the porcelain enamels which may be used at temperatures as high as 750*F., and also a description of the properties of the more heat resistant resins of commerce. The method of preparation and testing of the various coatings investigated in this research is given, and the results are tabulated and discussed. Best results were obtained with Dow Corning silicones of the 800 series heavily pigmented with either zinc dust or aluminum bronze, and with glycerol phthalate -- silicone coatings pigmented with aluminum bronze.

Rugose Corals Of The Madison Group, William R. Paine Jun 1947

Rugose Corals Of The Madison Group, William R. Paine

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

One of the best types of index fossils, and one which occurs most plentifully in the Madison group of formations in Montana, and yet, one which has been little studied, is the group of rugose, or cup, corals. Perhaps this group of fossils has not been studied in detail because their distinguishing characteristics are mainly internal, and laboratory preparation in the form of thin section or polished surfaces is necessary to bring out these characteristics.

Kibbey Sandstone In Montana, Glen Shean Jun 1947

Kibbey Sandstone In Montana, Glen Shean

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Much attention has recently been given, by geologists, to prolific water bearing horizon and a potential oil horizon, known as the Kibbey sandstone, which lies deeply buried under much of central Montana. In some localities the sandstone is dry, and its identification in cuttings from deep wells has in many cases proved difficult.
