Intrinsic Knotting And Linking Of Complete Graphs, Erica Flapan
Intrinsic Knotting And Linking Of Complete Graphs, Erica Flapan
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
We show that for every m∈N, there exists an n∈N such that every embedding of the complete graph Kn in R3 contains a link of two components whose linking number is at least m. Furthermore, there exists an r∈N such that every embedding of Kr in R3 contains a knot Q with |a2(Q)| ≥ m, where a2(Q) denotes the second coefficient of the Conway polynomial of Q.
On Legal Interpretations Of The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Paul H. Edelman
On Legal Interpretations Of The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Paul H. Edelman
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
There has been a spate of interest in the application of the Condorcet Jury Theorem to issues in the law. This theorem holds that a majority vote among a suitably large body of voters, all of whom are more likely than not to vote correctly, will almost surely result in the correct outcome. Its uses have ranged from estimating the correct size of juries to justifying the voting of creditors in Chapter 11 reorganizations. While the mathematics is unassailable, the legal interpretation of the conclusion is dependent on the model of probability one uses when invoking the assumption that the …
Racks, Quandles And Virtual Knots, Victor Samuel Nelson
Racks, Quandles And Virtual Knots, Victor Samuel Nelson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We begin with a brief survey of the theory of virtual knots, which was announced in 1996 by Kauffman. This leads naturally to the subject of quandles and quandle homology, which we also briefly introduce. Chapter 2 contains a proof in terms of Gauss diagrams that the forbidden moves unknot virtual knots. This chapter includes material which has appeared in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications and is reprinted here by permission of World Scientific Publishing. In chapter 3 (cowritten with my advisor R.A.Litherland) we confirm a conjecture of J.S.Carter et.al. that the long exact sequence in rack …
Paleomagnetism Of The Jura-Cretaceous Kyuquot Group, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Chad K. Hults
Paleomagnetism Of The Jura-Cretaceous Kyuquot Group, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Chad K. Hults
WWU Graduate School Collection
The Kyuquot Group is a series of marine clastic deposits of Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous age located on the NW portion of Vancouver Island. These sediments have been folded, but not metamorphosed, and so provide an attractive target for paleomagnetic study. Results from these rocks fill a significant (50 m.y.) time gap in our knowledge of the paleomagnetic paleolatitude record of Wrangellia. Paleomagnetic results from the underlying Bonanza Volcanics (Symons, 1984) show no significant relative latitudinal displacement of Wrangellia with respect to North America. This, along with geological correlations between other similar-aged clastic sediment units, has led several workers …
A New Hypothesis For The Origin Of Dune Ridges, Neil Duffin
A New Hypothesis For The Origin Of Dune Ridges, Neil Duffin
WWU Graduate School Collection
In support of a new hypothesis concerning the origin of dune ridges, fieldwork was carried out on the Long Beach Peninsula, SW Washington State, between 1997 and 2002. Procedures included coring, profiling, measuring and recording cross-section stratigraphy, and collected data analyzed and compiled at Western Washington University. The proposed hypothesis envisions coseismic subsidence, formation of a berm or beach ridge, subsequent uplift, and eolian deposition on the berm or beach ridge to form a new dune ridge. Geomorphic and stratigraphic evidence from the Long Beach Peninsula is presented and compared to the standard models outlined in the literature.

A Baiting System For Delivery Of An Oral Plague Vaccine To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Terry E. Creekmore, Tonie E. Rocke, Jerry Hurley
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Laboratory and field studies were conducted between July and October 1999 to identify bait preference, biomarker efficacy, and bait acceptance rates for delivering an oral plague vaccine to black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Twenty juvenile captive prairie dogs were offered alfalfa baits containing either alfalfa, alfalfa and 5% molasses, or alfalfa, 5% molasses and 4% salt. Based on the results of these trials we selected a bait containing alfalfa, 7% molasses, and 1% salt for field trials to determine bait acceptance rates by free-ranging animals. The biomarkers DuPont Blue dye, iophenoxic acid, and tetracycline hydrochloride were orally administered …

Safety Of Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51 Vaccine In Non-Target Ungulates And Coyotes, Terry J. Kreeger, Thomas J. Deliberto, Steven C. Olsen, William H. Edwards, Walter E. Cook
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Brucellosis is endemic in free-ranging elk (Cervus elaphus) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA; USA). It is possible that an oral brucellosis vaccine could be developed and disseminated in the GYA to reduce disease transmission. Should this occur, non-target species other than elk and bison may come in contact with the vaccine resulting in morbidity or mortality. To assess biosafety, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis; n=10), pronghorn (Antilocapra americana; n=9), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus; n=11), moose (Alces alces shirasi; n=10), and …

Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite
Assessing Vulnerability To Agricultural Drought: A Nebraska Case Study, Olga V. Wilhelmi, Donald A. Wilhite
Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Recent drought events in the United States and the magnitude of drought losses indicate the continuing vulnerability of the country to drought. Until recently, drought management in many states, including Nebraska, has been largely response oriented with little or no attention to mitigation and preparedness. In 1998, Nebraska began to revise its drought plan in order to place more emphasis on mitigation. One of the main aspects of drought mitigation and planning is the assessment of who and what is vulnerable and why. This paper presents a method for spatial, Geographic Information Systems-based assessment of agricultural drought vulnerability in Nebraska. …
Review Of Determination Of Organic Compounds In Soils, Sediments And Sludges By T. R. Crompton, John J. Johnston
Review Of Determination Of Organic Compounds In Soils, Sediments And Sludges By T. R. Crompton, John J. Johnston
USDA Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
T. R. Crompton has accomplished the Herculean task of summarizing the literature (up to 1998) for the determination of organic and organometallic substances in soils, aquatic, and marine sediments and sludge. Although previous books address the analysis of such compounds in water, this is the first book dedicated to the analysis of pollutants in soils, sediments, and sludges, matrices that typically contain a variety of interfering compounds and offer significant analytical challenges. Overall, the book is relatively easy to read; the “camera ready” manuscript produced by the author contains clear tables, figures, and font. Classes of compounds addressed in this …
Techniques For Bundling The Solution Space Of Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Amy Beckwith
Techniques For Bundling The Solution Space Of Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Amy Beckwith
CSE Technical Reports
We study the backtrack-search procedure with forward checking (FCBT) for finding all solutions to a finite Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP). We describe how to use dynamic interchangeability to enhance the performance of search and represent the solution space in a compact manner. We evaluate this strategy (FC-DNPI) in terms of the numbers of nodes visited, constraints checked, and solution bundles generated by comparing it, theoretically and empirically, to other search strategies. We show that FC-DNPI is equivalent to search with the Cross Product Representation (FC-CPR) of [Hubbe and Freuder 1992] in terms of the numbers of solution bundles and constraint …
Two Algorithms For Shaped-Based Porosity Measures, Leen-Kiat Soh
Two Algorithms For Shaped-Based Porosity Measures, Leen-Kiat Soh
CSE Technical Reports
In this paper, we present two algorithms for shape-based porosity measures. Specifically, we describe two innovative attributes called perimeter porosity and area porosity as feature descriptors. Perimeter porosity refers to how “porous” or “weak” an image object is, while area porosity determines the degree of “branchiness” of an object. We show the applicability of the two measures through a SAR sea ice image classification example.
A Set Of New Sea Ice Feature Descriptors For Sar Images, Leen-Kiat Soh
A Set Of New Sea Ice Feature Descriptors For Sar Images, Leen-Kiat Soh
CSE Technical Reports
In this paper, we present a set of algorithms for describing sea ice features in SAR images. These algorithms we have implemented and incorporated in the ARKTOS software package, an intelligent sea ice classification. These algorithms have unique characteristics. Some are extensions or adaptations of existing image processing techniques to the specific problem domain of satellite sea ice classification, while some are innovative designs, inspired by the aforementioned problem domain. These feature descriptors may be generalized to other remote sensing applications.
Negotiation-Based Coalition Formation Model For Agents With Incomplete Information And Time Constraints, Leen-Kiat Soh
Negotiation-Based Coalition Formation Model For Agents With Incomplete Information And Time Constraints, Leen-Kiat Soh
CSE Technical Reports
In this paper we describe a coalition formation model for a cooperative multiagent system in which each agent has incomplete information about its dynamic and uncertain world and must respond to sensed events within time constraints. With incomplete information and uncertain world parameters while lacking time, an agent cannot afford organizing a rationally optimal coalition formation. Instead, our agents use a two-stage methodology. When an agent detects an event in the world, it first compiles a list of coalition candidates that it thinks would be useful, and then negotiates with the candidates. A negotiation is an exchange of information and …
Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh
Arktos: An Intelligent System For Satellite Sea Ice Image Analysis, Leen-Kiat Soh
CSE Technical Reports
We present an intelligent system for satellite sea ice image analysis named ARKTOS (Advanced Reasoning using Knowledge for Typing Of Sea ice). The underlying methodology of ARKTOS is to perform fully automated analysis of sea ice images by mimicking the reasoning process of sea ice experts and photo-interpreters. Hence, our approach is feature-based, rule-based classification supported by multisource data fusion and knowledge bases. A feature can be an ice floe, for example. ARKTOS computes a host of descriptors for that feature and then applies expert rules to classify the floe into one of several ice classes. ARKTOS also incorporates information …

Multi-Dimensional Regression Analysis Of Time-Series Data Streams, Yixin Chen, Guozhu Dong, Jiawei Han, Benjamin W. Wah, Jianyong Wang
Kno.e.sis Publications
Real-time production systems and other dynamic environments often generate tremendous (potentially infinite) amount of stream data; the volume of data is too huge to be stored on disks or scanned multiple times. Can we perform on-line, multi-dimensional analysis and data mining of such data to alert people about dramatic changes of situations and to initiate timely, high-quality responses? This is a challenging task.
In this paper, we investigate methods for online, multi-dimensional regression analysis of time-series stream data, with the following contributions: (1) our analysis shows that only a small number of compressed regression measures instead of the complete stream …

Managing Semantic Content For The Web, Amit P. Sheth, Clemens Bertram, David Avant, Brian Hammond, Krzysztof Kochut, Yashodhan Warke
Kno.e.sis Publications
By associating meaning with content, the Semantic Web will facilitate search, interoperability, and the composition of complex applications. A recent Scientific American article described the Semantic Web as 'an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.' Not long ago, researchers at a Stanford University symposium predicted that this second phase of the Web would be as revolutionary as the Web itself.
Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo
Authorization And Access Control Of Application Data In Workflow Systems, Shengli Wu, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller, Zongwei Luo
Kno.e.sis Publications
Workflow Management Systems (WfMSs) are used to support the modeling and coordinated execution of business processes within an organization or across organizational boundaries. Although some research efforts have addressed requirements for authorization and access control for workflow systems, little attention has been paid to the requirements as they apply to application data accessed or managed by WfMSs. In this paper, we discuss key access control requirements for application data in workflow applications using examples from the healthcare domain, introduce a classification of application data used in workflow systems by analyzing their sources, and then propose a comprehensive data authorization and …

Workflow Quality Of Service, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller
Kno.e.sis Publications
Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In ecommerce processes, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying quality of service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of service. Management of such QoS directly impacts success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Organizations operating in modern markets require an excellent degree of quality of service management. Products and services must be available to customers with well-defined specifications. A good management of quality …

Picturing Nature: Education, Ornithology And Photography In The Life Of Cordelia Stanwood: 1865-1958, Cynthia Watkins Richardson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of environmental history, with a few exceptions, has neglected gendered analysis; in addition, several women's histories have analyzed a few environmental issues, but disregard environmental scholarship. In the joining of women's and environmental history, this dissertation examines the life of one woman, Cordelia J. Stanwood of Ellsworth, Maine (1865-1958), to determine how a woman could use nature to transcend the social limits of domesticity in the early twentieth century. Research of her correspondence, published writing, photography and forty years of field notes reveals that like many other women, she took advantage of technology and evolving ideas about womanhood …

The Transformation Of Iodate To Iodide In Marine Phytoplankton Cultures, George T. F. Wong, Ajcharaporn U. Piumsomboon, William M. Dunstan
OES Faculty Publications
Six species of phytoplankton, representing 6 major phylogenetic groups (2 oceanic species: a cyanobacteria, Synechococcus sp., and a coccolithophorid, Emiliania huxleyi; and 4 coastal species: a prasinophyte, Tetraselmis sp., the green algae Dunaliella tertiolecta, the diatom Skeletonema costatum and a dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae) were tested for their ability to reduce iodate to iodide in batch cultures. They all did so to varying degrees. Thus, the reduction of iodate to iodide by phytoplankton may be a general phenomenon in the marine environment. At ambient concentrations of iodate, the rates of depletion of iodate and appearance of …
An Empirical Analysis Of Electronic Data Interchange (Edi) Implementation Benefits In Kentucky Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises: Some Implications For New It Implementation, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
This paper reports that the benefits accrued from implementing and integrating Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be conceptualized into two factors. First, firms derive operational/tactical benefits by predominantly focusing on increasing internal utility of this technology. Second, firms derive strategic benefits from EDI in the form of better external relationships and alliances with trading partners and an enhanced ability to compete in their market. Among other significant findings, there are clear indications from the correlation statistics reported here that experience with EDI, industrial category of a firm and the level of ED! integral ton …
Growth Increment Analysis Of Marine Bivalves From The North, Stephen D. Houk
Growth Increment Analysis Of Marine Bivalves From The North, Stephen D. Houk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study aids in developing a sea surface temperature (SST) proxy with monthly temporal resolution using a combination of growth increment and stable isotope analyses of marine bivalves from the north coast of Peru. Faunal assemblages from the Siches and Ostra Base Camp archaeological sites contain shells of warm-tropical mollusks that currently live farther north in Ecuador. The presence of warm-tropical species in these sites and others as far south as 10"s latitude and dating prior to 5730 cal yr B.P. indicates a stable warm-water regime in the eastern tropical Pacific which subsequently changes to a modern temperate-water regime after …

Quantitative Analysis Of Transmission Power Control In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Seung Jong Park, R. Sivakumar
Quantitative Analysis Of Transmission Power Control In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Seung Jong Park, R. Sivakumar
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we address the issue of transmission power control in wireless ad-hoc networks. In general, it is assumed that the minimum transmission power required to keep the network connected achieves the optimal throughput performance in an ad-hoc network. In contrast, we show that using the minimal transmission range might not always result in optimal throughput performance. Using both throughput and throughput per unit energy as the optimization criteria, we demonstrate that the optimal transmission power is generically a function of the number of stations, the network size, and the traffic load. In particular, we observe that the optimal …
