Elevated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] prices have spurred interest in maximizing soybean seed yield and has led growers to increase the number of inputs in their production systems. However, little information exists about the effects of high-input management on soybean yield and profitability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of individual inputs, as well as combinations of inputs marketed to protect or increase soybean seed yield, yield components, and economic break-even probabilities. Studies were established in nine states and three soybean growing regions (North, Central, and South) between 2012 and 2014. In each site-year …

Automatic Hookworm Detection In Wireless Capsule Endoscopy Images, Xiao Wu, Honghan Chen, Tao Gan, Junzhou Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qiang Peng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has become a widely used diagnostic technique to examine inflammatory bowel diseases and disorders. As one of the most common human helminths, hookworm is a kind of small tubular structure with grayish white or pinkish semi-transparent body, which is with a number of 600 million people infection around the world. Automatic hookworm detection is a challenging task due to poor quality of images, presence of extraneous matters, complex structure of gastrointestinal, and diverse appearances in terms of color and texture. This is the first few works to comprehensively explore the automatic hookworm detection for WCE images. …

Outlier Detection In Complex Categorical Data By Modeling The Feature Value Couplings, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao, Ling Chen Jul 2016

Outlier Detection In Complex Categorical Data By Modeling The Feature Value Couplings, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao, Ling Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces a novel unsupervised outlier detection method, namely Coupled Biased Random Walks (CBRW), for identifying outliers in categorical data with diversified frequency distributions and many noisy features. Existing pattern-based outlier detection methods are ineffective in handling such complex scenarios, as they misfit such data. CBRW estimates outlier scores of feature values by modelling feature value level couplings, which carry intrinsic data characteristics, via biased random walks to handle this complex data. The outlier scores of feature values can either measure the outlierness of an object or facilitate the existing methods as a feature weighting and selection indicator. Substantial …

Three Strategies To Success: Learning Adversary Models In Security Games, Nika Haghtalab, Fei Fang, Thanh Hong Nguyen, Arunesh Sinha, Ariel D. Procaccia, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

State-of-the-art applications of Stackelberg security games -- including wildlife protection -- offer a wealth of data, which can be used to learn the behavior of the adversary. But existing approaches either make strong assumptions about the structure of the data, or gather new data through online algorithms that are likely to play severely suboptimal strategies. We develop a new approach to learning the parameters of the behavioral model of a bounded rational attacker (thereby pinpointing a near optimal strategy), by observing how the attacker responds to only three defender strategies. We also validate our approach using experiments on real and …

Proxy Signature With Revocation, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Shu Ma Jul 2016

Proxy Signature With Revocation, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Shu Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Proxy signature is a useful cryptographic primitive that allows signing right delegation. In a proxy signature scheme, an original signer can delegate his/her signing right to a proxy signer (or a group of proxy signers) who can then sign documents on behalf of the original signer. In this paper, we investigate the problem of proxy signature with revocation. The revocation of delegated signing right is necessary for a proxy signature scheme when the proxy signer’s key is compromised and/or any misuse of the delegated right is noticed. Although a proxy signature scheme usually specifies a delegation time period, it may …

Generic Anonymous Identity-Based Broadcast Encryption With Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Kai He, Jian Weng, Man Ho Au, Yijun Mao, Deng, Robert H. Jul 2016

Generic Anonymous Identity-Based Broadcast Encryption With Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Kai He, Jian Weng, Man Ho Au, Yijun Mao, Deng, Robert H.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a broadcast encryption system, a broadcaster can encrypt a message to a group of authorized receivers S and each authorized receiver can use his/her own private key to correctly decrypt the broadcast ciphertext, while the users outside S cannot. Identity-based broadcast encryption (IBBE) system is a variant of broadcast encryption system where any string representing the user’s identity (e.g., email address) can be used as his/her public key. IBBE has found many applications in real life, such as pay-TV systems, distribution of copyrighted materials, satellite radio communications. When employing an IBBE system, it is very important to protect the …

Robust Repositioning To Counter Unpredictable Demand In Bike Sharing Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Michael Trick, Pradeep Varakantham Jul 2016

Robust Repositioning To Counter Unpredictable Demand In Bike Sharing Systems, Supriyo Ghosh, Michael Trick, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bike Sharing Systems (BSSs) experience a significant loss in customer demand due to starvation (empty base stations precluding bike pickup) or congestion (full base stations precluding bike return). Therefore, BSSs operators reposition bikes between stations with the help of carrier vehicles. Due to unpredictable and dynamically changing nature of the demand, myopic reasoning typically provides a below par performance. We propose an online and robust repositioning approach to minimise the loss in customer demand while considering the possible uncertainty in future demand. Specifically, we develop a scenario generation approach based on an iterative two player game to compute a strategy …

Which Information Sources Are More Effective And Reliable In Video Search, Cheng Zhiyong, Xuanchong Li, Jialie Shen, Alexander G. Hauptmann Jul 2016

Which Information Sources Are More Effective And Reliable In Video Search, Cheng Zhiyong, Xuanchong Li, Jialie Shen, Alexander G. Hauptmann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It is common that users are interested in finding video segments, which contain further information about the video contents in a segment of interest. To facilitate users to find and browse related video contents, video hyperlinking aims at constructing links among video segments with relevant information in a large video collection. In this study, we explore the effectiveness of various video features on the performance of video hyperlinking, including subtitle, metadata, content features (i.e., audio and visual), surrounding context, as well as the combinations of those features. Besides, we also test different search strategies over different types of queries, which …

The Effects Of Multiple Query Evidences On Social Image Retrieval, Zhiyong Cheng, Jialie Shen, Haiyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

System performance assessment and comparison are fundamental for large-scale image search engine development. This article documents a set of comprehensive empirical studies to explore the effects of multiple query evidences on large-scale social image search. The search performance based on the social tags, different kinds of visual features and their combinations are systematically studied and analyzed. To quantify the visual query complexity, a novel quantitative metric is proposed and applied to assess the influences of different visual queries based on their complexity levels. Besides, we also study the effects of automatic text query expansion with social tags using a pseudo …

Linear Encryption With Keyword Search, Shiwei Zhang, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu Jul 2016

Linear Encryption With Keyword Search, Shiwei Zhang, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays an increasing amount of data stored in the public cloud need to be searched remotely for fast accessing. For the sake of privacy, the remote files are usually encrypted, which makes them difficult to be searched by remote servers. It is also harder to efficiently share encrypted data in the cloud than those in plaintext. In this paper, we develop a searchable encryption framework called Linear Encryption with Keyword Search (LEKS) that can semi-generically convert some existing encryption schemes meeting our Linear Encryption Template (LET) to be searchable without re-encrypting all the data. For allowing easy data sharing, we …

Significant Permission Identification For Android Malware Detection, Lichao Sun Jul 2016

Significant Permission Identification For Android Malware Detection, Lichao Sun

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A recent report indicates that a newly developed malicious app for Android is introduced every 11 seconds. To combat this alarming rate of malware creation, we need a scalable malware detection approach that is effective and efficient. In this thesis, we introduce SigPID, a malware detection system based on permission analysis to cope with the rapid increase in the number of Android malware. Instead of analyzing all 135 Android permissions, our approach applies 3-level pruning by mining the permission data to identify only significant permissions that can be effective in distinguishing benign and malicious apps. Based on the identified significant …

One-Round Strong Oblivious Signature-Based Envelope, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo, Mingwu Zhang Jul 2016

One-Round Strong Oblivious Signature-Based Envelope, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Fuchun Guo, Mingwu Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Oblivious Signature-Based Envelope (OSBE) has been widely employed for anonymity-orient and privacy-preserving applications. The conventional OSBE execution relies on a secure communication channel to protect against eavesdroppers. In TCC 2012, Blazy, Pointcheval and Vergnaud proposed a framework of OSBE (BPV-OSBE) without requiring any secure channel by clarifying and enhancing the OSBE security notions. They showed how to generically build an OSBE scheme satisfying the new strong security in the standard model with a common-reference string. Their framework requires 2-round interactions and relies on the smooth projective hash function (SPHF) over special languages, i.e., languages from encryption of signatures. In this …

A Step Towards An Intelligent Digital Training Management System (I-Dtms), Andrew Dugger

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Army Digital Training Management System (DTMS) is a web-based system designed to create a single point of entry for units to schedule unit training, manage training resources, and create schedules and master calendars for training. Currently, the U.S. Army uses DTMS to manage unit training and help commanders at each step of the training management process from planning and preparing to execute and assessing the training plans. This research aims to add intelligent features to DTMS through augmenting it with an intelligent decision support system (ITPSS) that utilizes artificial intelligence techniques (case-based reasoning, in particular) to determine if …

Complex-Valued Time-Series Correlation Increases Sensitivity In Fmri Analysis, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe Jul 2016

Complex-Valued Time-Series Correlation Increases Sensitivity In Fmri Analysis, Mary C. Kociuba, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

To develop a linear matrix representation of correlation between complex-valued (CV) time-series in the temporal Fourier frequency domain, and demonstrate its increased sensitivity over correlation between magnitude-only (MO) time-series in functional MRI (fMRI) analysis.

Materials and Methods

The standard in fMRI is to discard the phase before the statistical analysis of the data, despite evidence of task related change in the phase time-series. With a real-valued isomorphism representation of Fourier reconstruction, correlation is computed in the temporal frequency domain with CV time-series data, rather than with the standard of MO data. A MATLAB simulation compares the Fisher-z transform …

Connecting The Visible World With The Invisible: Particulate Diagrams Deepen Student Understanding Of Chemistry, Thomas Pentecost, Sarah Weber, Deborah Herrington Jul 2016

Connecting The Visible World With The Invisible: Particulate Diagrams Deepen Student Understanding Of Chemistry, Thomas Pentecost, Sarah Weber, Deborah Herrington

Peer Reviewed Articles

Research suggests that connecting the visible (macroscopic) world of chemical phenomena to the invisible (particulate) world of atoms and molecules enhances student understanding in chemistry (Birk and Yezierski 2006; Gabel, Samuel, and Hunn 1987; Johnstone 1993; Nakhleh 1992). This approach aligns with the science standards (see box, p. 58) and is fundamental to the redesigned AP Chemistry curriculum. However, chemistry is usually taught at the abstract symbolic level, rarely incorporating particulate-level instruction. This article addresses that shortcoming by describing how to use particulate diagrams in a chemistry course.

Photodissociation Dynamics Of Ocs Near 214 Nm Using Ion Imaging, Wei Wei, Colin J. Wallace, George Mcbane, Simon W. North Jul 2016

Photodissociation Dynamics Of Ocs Near 214 Nm Using Ion Imaging, Wei Wei, Colin J. Wallace, George Mcbane, Simon W. North

Peer Reviewed Articles

The OCS photodissociation dynamics of the dominant S(1 D 2) channel near 214 nm have been studied using velocity map ion imaging. We report a CO vibrational branching ratio of 0.79:0.21 for v = 0:v = 1, indicating substantially higher vibrational excitation than that observed at slightly longer wavelengths. The CO rotational distribution is bimodal for both v = 0 and v = 1, although the bimodality is less pronounced than at longer wavelengths. Vector correlations, including rotational alignment, indicate that absorption to both the 21A′ (A) and 11A″ (B) states is important in the …

Diquark Mass Differences From Unquenched Lattice Qcd, Yujiang Bi, Hao Cai, Ying Chen, Ming Gong, Zhaofeng Liu, Hao-Xue Qiao, Yi-Bo Yang

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We calculate diquark correlation functions in the Landau gauge on the lattice using overlap valence quarks and 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations. Quark masses are extracted from the scalar part of quark propagators in the Landau gauge. The scalar diquark quark mass difference and axial vector scalar diquark mass difference are obtained for diquarks composed of two light quarks and of a strange and a light quark. The light sea quark mass dependence of the results is examined. Two lattice spacings are used to check the discretization effects. The coarse and fine lattices are of sizes 243 × 64 …

Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Luminophores And Enhancement With Melatonin, Sarah Michelle Roughton Jul 2016

Electrogenerated Chemiluminescence Of Luminophores And Enhancement With Melatonin, Sarah Michelle Roughton

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The photoluminescent (PL), electrochemical, and electrogenerated chemiluminescent (ECL) properties of 1,5-I-Aedans (N-(iodoacetylaminotheyl)-1-naphthylamine-5-sulfonic acid) in aqueous buffered (KH2PO4) and 50:50 (v/v) acetonitrile:KH2PO4 solutions were obtained. Tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) was used as the oxidative-reductive coreactant. The PL efficiencies (em) were 1.83 in KH2PO4 and 4.81 in mixed solvent compared to Ru(bpy)32+ standard solutions (em = 1.0). 1,5-I-Aedans displayed quasi-reversible oxidative electrochemistry in aqueous solutions and irreversible to quasi-reversible oxidation in mixed solvent. ECL efficiencies (ecl) were obtained by comparison to a Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) standard (ecl = 1) and were higher in KH2PO4 (ecl = 6.8 x 10-4) than in the mixed …

Dental Microwear Variation In Teleoceras Fossiger (Rhinocerotidae) From The Miocene (Hemphillian) Of Kansas, With Consideration Of Masticatory Processes And Enamel Microstructure, Kelsie Abrams Jul 2016

Dental Microwear Variation In Teleoceras Fossiger (Rhinocerotidae) From The Miocene (Hemphillian) Of Kansas, With Consideration Of Masticatory Processes And Enamel Microstructure, Kelsie Abrams

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Dental microwear analysis is the study of microscopic features on the surfaces of teeth, and is used to reconstruct and analyze diet in extinct and extant animals. Microwear analysis on ungulates is typically conducted on the paracone or protoconid of the second molar, as these cusps are usually the first point of contact between upper and lower teeth during the chewing stroke. However, the exact method of mastication varies in different groups of ungulates, and the influence of mastication on the location and production of microwear features has been studied very little. Additionally, the role of highly specialized enamel microstructure …

Santonian–Campanian Calcareous Nannofossil Paleobiogeography, Brandi R. Moore Jul 2016

Santonian–Campanian Calcareous Nannofossil Paleobiogeography, Brandi R. Moore

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Calcareous nannofossil abundance data from 11 DSDP/ODP sites were analyzed by multivariate methods to assess the paleoceanographic change that is associated with the Santonian-Campanian boundary transition. Data were divided into Santonian or Campanian age groups based on the presence or absence of the lower Campanian nannofossil species, Aspidolithus parcus parcus. All assemblages are dominated by Watznaueria barnesiae, Micula decussata, and Prediscosphaera intercisa. Analyses determined that the relative abundance of M. decussata generally reflects a change in temperature, with a preference for cool water. Prediscosphaera intercisa appears to have had an inverse abundance relationship with M. decussata, suggesting that …

Reconstructing The Paleoecology And Biogeography Of Rhinoceroses (Mammalia: Rhinocerotidae) In The Great Plains Of North America, Leading Up To Their Extinction In The Early Pliocene, Bian Wang

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Members of the family Rhinocerotidae first appeared in the middle Eocene and were one of most successful mammal groups of the Oligocene and Miocene in North America. Their extinction in the early Pliocene has been attributed to several causes, including cooling climate, an expansion of C4 grasslands, and faunal turnover favoring high-crowned, open habitat-adapted mammalian taxa. This study tests whether the extinction of North American rhinoceroses in the Great Plains was abrupt or gradual by examining changes in their paleogeographic distribution in a series of time-slices through the Barstovian, Clarendonian, and Hemphillian North American land-mammal ages. It further examines …

The Influence Of Training On Guides And Their Environmentally Responsible Behaviors And Transformational Leadership Abilities, Nancy Qwynne Lackey Jul 2016

The Influence Of Training On Guides And Their Environmentally Responsible Behaviors And Transformational Leadership Abilities, Nancy Qwynne Lackey

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The ecotourism and interpretive fields were established, in part, to protect natural environments. This goal is achieved by implementing environmentally responsible practices and by providing transformative experiences for visitors. Previous research suggests that ecotour and interpretive guides play a vital role in implementing environmentally responsible behaviors (ERBs) and creating transformative visitor experiences. Other researchers have found that guide training yields many benefits for guides and their abilities, but few have explored the influence of training on guides in detail. The purpose of this research was to explore the influence of established training programs on guides and their ERBs and transformational …

Instructional Framing And Student Learning Of Community Interactions, Nathaniel Niosco Jul 2016

Instructional Framing And Student Learning Of Community Interactions, Nathaniel Niosco

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ecology is a broad field of science that encompasses many disciplines with large impacts in our society (AAAS, 2011; NRC, 2009). To understand the complex systems and concepts of this discipline requires a foundation of knowledge that students often gain in the classroom (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Helping students develop this foundation of knowledge requires an understanding of how they use surface and deep reasoning skills to understand and learn new material. In addition, using methods to teach students to transfer these skills between multiple contexts is key to expanding their ability to broadly apply knowledge. The purpose of …

Synthesis And Applications Of Lanthanide Sulfides And Oxides, Christopher Marin Jul 2016

Synthesis And Applications Of Lanthanide Sulfides And Oxides, Christopher Marin

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation focuses on two of the key fields where lanthanides find ready application: as optically active materials with a focus on the lanthanide sulfides, and as catalytic materials with a focus on cerium oxide.

The lanthanide sulfides have attracted considerable interest for their potential as solar energy conversion materials, pigments, infrared window materials, and phosphor host media. However, applications of these materials remain limited due to their synthetic difficulty along with their not well understood properties compounded by both their difficulty in manufacturing as well as in simulating largely due to the need to take into account f-shell electrons. …

Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev Jul 2016

Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev

Student Work

My dissertation focuses on developing scalable algorithms for analyzing large complex networks and evaluating how the results alter with changes to the network. Network analysis has become a ubiquitous and very effective tool in big data analysis, particularly for understanding the mechanisms of complex systems that arise in diverse disciplines such as cybersecurity [83], biology [15], sociology [5], and epidemiology [7]. However, data from real-world systems are inherently noisy because they are influenced by fluctuations in experiments, subjective interpretation of data, and limitation of computing resources. Therefore, the corresponding networks are also approximate. This research addresses these issues of obtaining …
